Brushless DC motors have a trapezoidal back EMF wave form and are fed with rectangular stator currents. Under these conditions, the torque produced is theoretcally constant. However, in practice, torque ripple may exist, one major cause of which conies from phase current commutation. In this paper we propose an improved method of reducing the torque ripple due to phase current commutation of indirectly restricting the uncommutated current through control of the other phase currents. Simulation results are present.
This paper presents a rotor shape optimization of interior type permanent magnet (IPM) motor for cogging torque minimization and maximization of reluctance torque. In order to minimize the cogging torque, the optimal notches are put on the rotor pole face and the arc type pole face is applied. The variations of cogging torque and d-q axis inductions are analyzed by finite element method (FEM).
In this paper, maximum efficiency operation of two types of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, namely; surface type permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM) and interior type permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM), are investigated. The efficiency of both drives is maximized by minimizing copper and iron losses. Loss minimization is implemented using flux weakening. A neural network controller (NNC) is designed for each drive, to achieve loss minimization at difffrent speeds and load torque values. Data for training the NNC are obtained through off-line simulations of SPMSM and IPMSM at difffrent operating conditions. Accuracy and fast response of each NNC is proved by applying sudden changes in speed and load and tracking the UC output. The drives'efHciency obtained by flux weakening is compared with the efficiency obtained when setting the d-axis current component to zero, while varying the angle of advance "$\vartheta$" of the PWM inverter supplying the PMSM drive. Equal efficiencies are obtained at diffErent values of $\vartheta$, derived to be function of speed and load torque. A NN is also designed, and trained to vary $\vartheta$ following the derived control law. The accuracy and fast response of the NN controller is also proved.so proved.
In this paper, a loss-minimization nonlinear torque control for Electrical Vehicle(EV) induction motors is proposed. To improve the efficiency of the induction motors, it is important to find the optimal flux reference that minimize power losses. The proposed optimal flux reference is derived using a power loss function that is constructed with stator resistance losses, rotor resistance losses and core losses. And the time-varying load torque and the rotor resistance variation are considered in the power loss function. An algorithm that identifying the load torque is used. The rotor flux observer is used to obtain an accurate flux value regardless of the rotor resistance variation. Simulation results show a significant reduction in energy losses.

A torque ripple minimization technique is proposed for high power induction motors driven by 3-level inverters with switching frequency of inverter switching elements limited around 500Hz level. It is noted that conventional DTC algorithms with torque ripple minimization scheme are devised for applications with relatively high switching frequency above 2-3kHz. A new DTC algorithm, especially for low switching frequency inverter system, illustrates relatively reduced torque ripple characteristics all over the operating speed region. Simulation results show effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm, and associated experimental works will be presented in the final paper.
This paper deals with a Direct Torque Control (DTC) of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) for the Electric Vehicle (EV) propulsion system using a Neural Network (NN). The Conventional DTC with optimized switching lookup table and three level torque controller generates relatively large torque ripples in an electric vehicle motor drive. For reducing the torque ripples, a three level torque controller is hereby replaced by the five level torque controller. Furthermore, the switching lookup table of the five level torque controller based DTC is replaced with a Neural Network. These DTC schemes of an IPMSM drive are simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulated results are compared with the conventional DTC and it is found that the ripples in the torque, as well as in the stator current, are reduced drastically.

Switched reluctance motor(SRM) has some advantages such as low cost, high torque density but SRM has essentially high torque ripple due to its salient structure. In order to apply SRM to industrial field, torque ripple has to be reduced. This paper introduces optimal design process of SRM using an optimization algorithm of Progressive Quadratic Response Surface Modeling(PQRSM) and two-dimensional(2D) Finite Element Method(FEM). The electrical and geometrical design parameters have been adopted as 2D design variables. From this work, it can be obtained both the optimal design minimized torque ripple and the optima1 design maximized the average torque, respectively. Finally, this Paper Presents Performance comparison of two optimal designs and consider influence of the selected design variables in torque characteristics.

Although the switched reluctance motor (SRM) has a several advantages such as simple magnetic structure, robustness, wide range of speed characteristics and simple driving, it has a considerable inherent torque ripple and speed variation duet to the driving characteristics of pulse current waveform and the nonlinear inductance profile. The high torque ripple and speed variation inhibits wide application. The minimization of the torque ripple is very important in high performance servo drive applications, which require smooth operation with minimum torque pulsations. This paper presents the new SRM torque modeling technique for the control of instantaneous torque. The SRM is modeled by the database of torque profiles for every small variation in currents and rotor angles, which is inferred from the several measured data by the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference technique. Simulation results demonstrating the effectiveness of proposed torque modeling technique are presented.
A major problem in Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is torque ripple, which causes undesirable acoustic noise and vibration. This work focuses on reducing the undesirable torque ripple in SRM by modifying stator and rotor geometry. This paper presents a comparative study on torque ripple minimization in SRM with modified pole shapes such as stator pole taper, stator pole face with non-uniform air gap and pole shoe attached to rotor pole. Further this paper presents a detailed sensitivity analysis of the effect of different geometrical parameters that alter the pole face shapes on the performance of SRM. The analysis is performed using finite-element method considering average torque and torque ripple as performance parameters. Based on the analysis, a design combining stator pole taper with non-uniform air gap is proposed to improve the torque characteristics of SRM. The dynamic characteristics of the proposed design are simulated and the results show satisfactory reduction in torque ripple.

This paper presents a torque ripple reduction algorithm for the switched reluctance motor drives using the fuzzy logic and the sliding mode control. A turn-on angle controller based on the fuzzy logic determines the optimal turn-on angle. In addition, a sliding mode torque control (SMTC) methods reduces torque ripples instantaneously in the commutation region. The proposed algorithm does not require complex system models considering nonlinear magnetizing or demagnetizing periods of the phase current. According to the rotor speed and torque, the proposed controller changes the turn-on angle and reference torque instantaneously until the torque ripples are minimized. The simulation and experimental results verify the validity of minimizing the torque ripple performance.
