Acoustic signal such as speech and scattered sound, are generally a nonstationary process whose frequency contents vary at any instant of time. For time-varying signal, whether a nonstationary or a deterministic transient signal, a traditional frequency domain representation does not reveal the contents of signal characteristics and may lead to erroneous results such as the loss of desired characteristics features or the mis-interpretation for a wrong conclusion. A time-frequency domain representation is needed to characterize such signatures. Pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD) is ideally suited for portraying nonstationary signal time-frequency domain and carried out by adapting the fast Fourier transform algorithm. In this paper, the important properties of PWVD were investigated using both stationary and nonstationry signatures by numerical examples PWVD was applied to acoustic sigtnatures to demonstrate its application for time-ferquency domain analysis.

In this paper, two-dimensional(2-D) Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) method using the domain decomposition method is proposed. We calculated the electromagnetic scattering field of a two dimensional rectangular Perfect Electric Conductor(PEC) structure using the 2-D FDTD method with Schur complement method as a domain decomposition method. Four domain decomposition and eight domain decomposition are applied for the analysis of the proposed structure. To validate the simulation results, the general 2-D FDTD algorithm for the total domain are applied to the same structure and the results show good agreement with the 2-D FDTD using the domain decomposition method.
The main object of this study is to develop an accurate and convenient method for the response analysis of offshore structures in real sea states. A numerical procedure is described for predicting the motion responses and tension variations of the ISSC TLP in multi-directional irregular waves. The developed numerical approach in the frequency domain is based on acombination of the three dimensional source distribution method, the dynamic response analysis method, and the spectral analysis method. Frequency domain analysis in the multi-directional irregular waves is expanded to a time domain analysis by using a convolution integral after obtaining the impulse response by Fourier transformation. The results of the comparison between responses in the frequency and time domain confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.
In order to accurately estimate the seismic behavior of buildings, it is important to consider both nonlinear characteristics of the buildings and the frequency dependency of the soil impedance. Therefore, transform methods of the soil impedance in the frequency domain to the impulse response in the time domain are needed because the nonlinear analysis can not be carried out in the frequency domain. The author has proposed practical transform methods. In this paper, seismic response analyses considering frequency dependent soil impedance in the time domain are shown. First, the formulation of the proposed transform methods is described. Then, the linear and nonlinear earthquake response analyses of a building on 2-layered soil were carried out using the transformed impulse responses. Through these analyses, the validity and efficiency of the methods were confirmed.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with multiple transmit antennas can exploit space-time block coding on each subchannel for reliable data transmission. Spacetime coded OFDM systems, however, are very sensitive to time variant channels because the channels need to be static over multiple OFDM symbol periods. In this paper, we propose to mitigate the channel variations in the frequency domain using a linear filter in the frequency domain that exploits the sparse structure of the system matrix in the frequency domain. Our approach has reduced complexity compared with alternative approaches based on time domain block-linear filters. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed frequency domain block-linear filter reduces computational complexity by more than a factor of ten at the cost of small performance degradation, compared with a time domain block-linear filter.

In this paper, the method for soil-structure interaction analyses in the time domain is proposed. The far field soil region which is the outside of the artificial boundary is modeled by using explicit frequency-dependent two dimensional infinite elements which can include multiple wave components propagating into the unbounded medium. Since the dynamic stiffness matrix of the far field soil region using the proposed infinite elements is obtained explicitly in terms of exciting frequencies and constants in the frequency domain, the matrix can be easily transformed into the displacement unit-impulse response matrix, which corresponds to a convolution integral of it in the time domain. To verify the proposed method for soil-structure interaction analyses in the time domain, the displacement responses due to an impulse load on the surface of a soil layer with the rigid bed rock are compared with those obtained by the method in the frequency domain and those by models with extend finite element meshes. Good agreements have been found between them.

Single-ring all-pass filters with various coupling ratios are designed, fabricated, and characterized to assess the validity of the split-step time-domain modeling approach, which is considered for direct simulation of time-domain characteristics, such as optical delay, of various ring resonator devices. When the coupling ratio of the single-ring all-pass filter is 0.4 and 0.8, the delay time is measured to be about 145 and 42 ps respectively, which is comparable to the time-domain modeling results of 151 and 47 ps respectively. The measurements for two- and three-ring all-pass filters are also found to agree quite well with the simulation results. With these results it is confirmed that the split-step time-domain model could be efficiently incorporated into an optical-communication simulation module for ring resonator delay components in an all-optical packet switching system.

The objective of the present work is to develop a time-domain numerical method of broadband noise in a cascade of airfoils. This paper focuses on dipolar broadband noise sources, resulting from the interaction of turbulent inflows with the flat-plate airfoil cascade. The turbulence response of a two-dimensional cascade is studied by solving both of the linearised and the full nonlinear Euler equations employing accurate higher order spatial differencing, time stepping techniques and non-reflecting inflow/outflow boundary condition. The time-domain result using the linearised Euler equations shows good agreement with the analytical solution using the modified LINSUB code. Through the comparison of the nonlinear time-domain result using the full nonlinear Euler equations with the linear, it is found that the acoustic mode amplitude of the nonlinear response is less than that of the linear response due to the energy cascade from low frequency components to the high frequency ones. Considering the merits of the time-domain methods over the typical time-linearised frequency-domain analysis, the current method is expected to be promising tools for analyzing the effects of the airfoil shapes, non-uniform background flow, linear-nonliear regimes on the broadband noise due to turbulence-cascade interaction.

This paper proposes a scheme to track channel response in OFDM systems with null sub-carriers. The proposed channel tracking scheme estimates the channel response first in the frequency domain by using the decision directed data. The time domain channel estimation is then performed to remove additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) components further. Due to the channel estimation in the frequency domain, no inverse matrix calculation is required in the time domain channel estimation. Computational reduction in the proposed method is about 93%, compared with the conventional time domain channel estimation method. Mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER) performances are evaluated by using computer simulation. The proposed method shows the same performance as that of the conventional time domain channel estimation even though the significant computational reduction.

A numerical analysis on deck wetness is carried out for a large caisson directly wet-towed by tugs in irregular waves. A constant panel method is used for linear analysis in frequency domain and a statistical post-processing for the deck wetness is presented. Hydrodynamic coefficients obtained from the frequency domain computation are imported for time domain analysis which enables complete modeling for towing equipment, environment, etc. Both frequency and time domain computations over two sea states are performed and comparison is made. In the time domain analysis, towing systems of various arrangements of tugs are investigated from short-term prediction for the largest deck wetness and the number of occurrences of deck wetness.
