  • A method to measure the speed and distance of moving object is proposed using the stereo vision system. One of the most important factors for measuring the speed and distance of moving object is the accuracy of object tracking. Accordingly, the background image algorithm is adopted to track the rapidly moving object and the local opening operator algorithm is used to remove the shadow and noise of object. The extraction efficiency of moving object is improved by using the adaptive threshold algorithm independent to variation of brightness. Since the left and right central points are compensated, the more exact speed and distance of object can be measured. Using the background image algorithm and local opening operator algorithm, the computational processes are reduced and it is possible to achieve the real-time processing of the speed and distance of moving object. The simulation results show that background image algorithm can track the moving object more rapidly than any other algorithm. The application of adaptive threshold algorithm improved the extraction efficiency of the target by reducing the candidate areas. Since the central point of the target is compensated by using the binocular parallax, the error of measurement for the speed and distance of moving object is reduced. The error rate of measurement for the distance from the stereo camera to moving object and for the speed of moving object are 2.68% and 3.32%, respectively.

  • In this paper, we present a new Practical implementation of a person verification system using the profile of 3-dimensional(3D) face images based on weighted Hausdorff distance(WHD) used depth information. The approach works on finding the nose tip have protrusion shape on the face using iterative selection method to use a fiducial feint and extract the profile image from vertical 3D data for the nose tip. Hausdorff distance(HD) is one of usually used measures for object matching. This works analyze the conventional HD and WHD, which the weighted factor is depth information. The Ll measure for comparing two feature vectors were used, because it is simple and robust. In the experimental results, the WHD method achieves recognition rate of 94.3% when the ranked threshold is 5.

  • In this study, we consider performance analysis of distance-based registration (DBR). DBR causes a mobile station (MS) to register its location when the distance between the current base station (BS) and the BS in which it last registered exceeds a distance threshold D. In general, DBR has some advantages over the other registration schemes but has a tendency to causes an MS to register more frequently than zone-based registration (ZBR) that is adopted in most of mobile communication systems. The DBR with implicit registration (DBIR) was proposed to improve the performance of DBR. In this study, we point out some problems of the previous analytical model based on continuous time Markov chain and analyze exact performance of the DBIR. We show that the DBIR always outperforms the DBR by using our exact analytical model.

  • When KS C IEC 60069-10-1(2015) standard is applied to estimate a hazardous area, the chart showing the relationship between a hazardous area distance and release characteristic is used as a guide to determine the extent of hazardous zones for various forms of release. Three release characteristic lines based on the three types of release as an unimpeded jet release with high velocity, a diffusive jet release with low velocity, and a release of heavy gases or vapours that spread along horizontal surfaces are given. As these characteristic lines have the low limit threshold, it is difficult to estimate the hazardous area distance when the value of release characteristic is under the low limit threshold. And KS C IEC 60079-10-1(2015) standard shows the concept for a zone of Negligible extent(NE) which can be considered as non hazardous area, but it is also difficult to apply the concept of a Negligible extent. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the guideline for the release characteristic to decide a hazardous area distance and the Negligible extent(NE) being considered as non-hazardous area when deciding a hazardous area distances by the KS C IEC 60079-10-1 standard.

  • As the popularity of the smartphone becomes increase, indoor smartphone positioning technology has been actively studied. The acoustic signal generated from the smartphone is received from the several microphones at the relative positioning system, and the trigger signal is proposed to mitigate the multipath effect and the effect is verified. But for the simple trigger method, there would be error occurred according to the variation of the distance or surrounding noise. In this paper, in order to resolve the problems, the dynamic trigger threshold technology is proposed and its effect is verified by the experiment.

  • AIS has been widely used for maritime traffic assessment for its convenience. However, AIS has problems with position missing due to radio interference and transmission distance limit. On the other hand, satellite radar determines the location of ships over a wide sea regardless of the problems. This study proposes a noble method of stepwise threshold determination to detect ships from Sentinel-1. The proposed method is up to 25 times faster than the existing moving window-based threshold determination method, and the detection accuracy is similar.

  • This paper deals with the estimation of the time of arrival (TOA) of ultra-wideband signals under IEEE 802.15.4a channel models. The proposed approach is based on a randomness test and consists of determining whether an autoregressive (AR) process modeling an energy frame is random or not by using a distance to measure the randomness. The proposed method uses a threshold that is derived analytically according to a preset false alarm probability. To highlight the effectiveness of the developed approach, simulation setups as well as real data experiments are conducted to assess the performance of the new TOA estimation algorithm. Thereby, the proposed method is compared with the cell averaging constant false alarm rate technique, the threshold comparison algorithm, and the technique based on maximum energy selection with search back. The obtained results are promising, considering both simulations and collected real-life data.

  • Face detection plays an important role in face recognition, video surveillance, and human computer interface. In this paper, we present a face detection system using eye detection with progressive thresholding from a digital camera. The face candidate is detected by using skin color segmentation in the YCbCr color space. The face candidates are verified by detecting the eyes that is located by iterative thresholding and correlation coefficients. Preprocessing includes histogram equalization, log transformation, and gray-scale morphology for the emphasized eyes image. The distance of the eye candidate points generated by the progressive increasing threshold value is employed to extract the facial region. The process of the face detection is repeated by using the increasing threshold value. Experimental results show that more enhanced face detection in real time.

  • Evaluating the risk of collision quantitatively plays a key role in developing the expert system of navigation and collision avoidance. This study suggested and developed a new approach to the evaluation by using the sech function as an alternative to the existing methods of appraising the collision risk. This study also investigated and built up theoretically how to determine the gradient coefficients in this approach and suggested the appropriate values as much as applicable. Finally this study analyzed thoroughly how to determine the threshold function of avoiding time and developed the appropriate equation.
