Critical Thinking Disposition, Problem Solving Ability, and Clinical Competence in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 비판적 사고성향, 문제해결능력 및 임상수행능력 조사연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the critical thinking disposition, problem solving ability, and clinical competence of nursing students in a 4-year baccalaureate university program. Methods: In this study, a descriptive survey design was used with convenience sample of 228 nursing students at a University in Chungbuk Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple stepwise regression. Results: The mean scores for critical thinking disposition, problem solving ability, and clinical competence were at the intermediate level. Significant positive correlations among critical thinking disposition, problem solving ability, and clinical competence were found. The regression model explained 46.8% of clinical competence. Problem solving confidence was the most significant predictor of clinical competence, other variables were intellectual fairness, intellectual eagerness/curiosity, and prudence. Conclusion: The study findings suggest that nursing students with higher levels of critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability will have a higher level of clinical competence. Furthermore, problem solving confidence might be the most important predictor in clinical competence. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the new teaching strategies in nursing education, strategies that will improve critical thinking disposition, problem solving ability, and clinical competence.

Effects of Critical Thinking Disposition, Knowledge Sharing Activity and Professional Work Environment on Clinical Decision-making Ability at General Hospital Nurses (일 종합병원 간호사의 비판적 사고성향과 지식공유 활동 및 전문직 업무환경이 임상적 의사결정능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nurses' critical thinking disposition and knowledge sharing activity and professional work environment on clinical decision-making ability. Methods: The data collection period for this study was from May 24 to May 31, 2021. The data were collected from 167 nurses who consented to participate in this study and have worked for more than one year at general hospital in Seoul. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between clinical decision-making ability and critical thinking disposition, knowledge sharing activity, and a professional work environment. Critical thinking disposition (β=.32, p<.001), knowledge sharing activitiy (β=.24, p=.002) and professional work environment (β=.20, p=.006) had a significant effect on clinical decision-making ability. These factors explained 35.5% of clinical decision-making ability (F=24.22, p<.001). Conclusion: Therefore, in order to develop the critical thinking disposition of nurses, development of systematic educational programs and strategies for practical application are needed. Through this, nurses can improve the professional decision-making ability and clinical performance ability.

Thinking Styles and Their Relationship with Self-regulated Learning Ability and Scientific Inquiry Ability of the Scientifically Gifted Students (과학영재들의 사고양식과 자기조절학습능력 및 과학탐구능력간의 관계 분석)

  • This study examined the thinking styles of scientifically gifted students on the basis of Sternberg's theory of mental self-government, and the relationship between thinking styles and self-regulated learning ability of the students and their scientific inquiry ability by the different types of thinking styles. 110 middle school students who belonging to the university science-gifted education center participated in this study. 13 thinking styles were postulated that fall along 5 dimensions which are functions, forms, levels, scopes and leanings of the mental self-government. Scientifically gifted students responded to the Thinking Style Inventory (TSI) that standardized Korean version, Self-regulated Ability Inventory and Test of Science Inquiry Skills Inventory (TSIS). The results indicated that scientifically gifted students prefer legislative, liberal, external, hierarchical and judical thinking styles, rather than conservative style. This result also showed that subscales of thinking styles were significantly correlated with self-regulated learning ability and scientific inquiry ability. The legislative style, hierarchical style, local style and liberal style were significant predictors of self-regulation learning ability. The legislative style was significant predictor, whereas oligarchic style was negative predictor of scientific inquiry ability. The results of k-means clustering analysis and MANOVA showed that the self-regulated learning ability and scientific inquiry ability were significantly correlated with the pattern and level of thinking style.

Development and application of a physical computing program applying design thinking to improve the creativity and computational thinking ability: Focusing on Microbit (창의성과 컴퓨팅 사고력 향상을 위한 디자인 사고 적용 피지컬 컴퓨팅 프로그램 개발 및 적용: 마이크로비트를 중심으로)

  • This study attempted to develop and apply a physical computing SW education program applying design thinking. The produced SW education program was applied to 22 students in the 5th and 6th grades of J and B elementary schools located in Jeju-si. Computational thinking ability and creativity pre-test was conducted, and Physical computing software training applied design thinking was conducted over a total of 5 sessions for 20 hours, followed by a post-test on creativity and computational thinking ability. As a result of the verification, it was found that physical computing SW education program applying design thinking was effective in improving the creativity and computing thinking ability of elementary school students.

Comparison of Problem Finding Ability, Creative Thinking Ability, Creative Tendency, Science Process Skill between the Scientifically Gifted and General Students (과학영재 학생과 일반 학생의 문제 발견력, 창의적 사고력, 창의적 성향, 과학 탐구 능력 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare problem finding ability, creative thinking ability, creative tendency, and science process skill between the scientifically gifted students and the general students. For this study, problem finding ability test, integrating creativity test, and science process skill test were conducted to the elementary gifted students (n=95) in science and the general students (n=149) at the same school district. The results of this study were as follows: The mean scores of problem finding, creative thinking, creative tendency, and science process skill of the gifted students were statistically higher than the general students. The problem finding ability had partially weak correlation with sub-domains of the creative thinking ability, creative tendency, and science process skill. Findings suggest that there are needs of further study about factors affecting problem finding and considering the degree of structure of problem situation.

  • In this paper, we propose a Science subject program based on programming learning to improve computational thinking ability in middle school. As the necessity of software education rises recently, the subject of information was designated as the mandatory subject in elementary, middle and high schools. In order to cultivate the ability that enables the leaners to search the knowledge in need by themselves and raise troubleshooting method, not the existing indoctrination, his thesis was willing to improve Computational Thinking ability and improve the ability of considering and thinking the matters by using scratch language. For that, this thesis developed and suggested science subject program that utilizes the programming learning.

Comparison on How Much Dolittle and Squeak Languages Influence Improving Elementary Students' Logical Thinking Capability (두리틀과 스퀵 언어가 초등학생의 논리적 사고력 신장에 미치는 영향 비교)

  • Computer programming education can improve students' logical thinking and problem-solving ability. Therefore, it is essential tool to improve algorithmic thinking ability. We study how much Dolittle and Squeak influences improving elementary students' logical thinking ability. Thus, we divided 6th grade elementary students into two classes and then taught Dorittle and Squeak programming languages for 6 weeks, respectively. We compare and analyze each logical thinking ability and its sub-classifications. The results showed that Dorritle affects significant improvement, but not Squeak.

  • The researchers developed the teaching-learning materials for 9th grade mathematically gifted students in terms of the hypothesis that the students would have opportunity for problem solving and develop various mathematical thinking through the mathematical modeling lessons. The researchers analyzed what mathematical thinking abilities were shown on each stage of modeling process through the application of the materials. Organization of information ability appears in the real-world exploratory stage. Intuition insight ability, spatialization/visualization ability, mathematical reasoning ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the pre-mathematical model development stage. Mathematical abstraction ability, spatialization/visualization ability, mathematical reasoning ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the mathematical model development stage. Generalization and application ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the model application stage. The developed modeling assignments have provided the opportunities for mathematically-gifted students' mathematical thinking ability to develop and expand.

  • The purpose of this study was to see the effects of a learning method of the multiplication play activities on improving the mathematical thinking ability and mathematical attitude of 2nd grade students in elementary school. We chose 19 students of the 2nd grade experimental group of D elementary school in the D city to conduct this research. The result of this study are as follows. First, Classes using multiplicative play activities have a positive effect on students' mathematical thinking ability. When analyzing transcripts and activities, students were able to think of strategies that could solve the problem according to the situation. Second, Classes using multiplicative play activities, in result of this they have positive effect mathematical attitude than using textbook in terms of attitude about mathematical subject and habits of study. In conclusion, the multiplication play activities are effective to improve mathematical thinking ability and attitude of second elementary school students. It can be a implication for the method of improving mathematical thinking ability and attitude.

Emergency Nurses' Critical Thinking Disposition, Problem Solving Ability, and Triage Competency (중증도 분류간호사의 비판적 사고성향, 문제해결능력과 중증도 분류역량)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among critical thinking disposition, problem solving ability, and triage competency in nurses working in Emergency Rooms (ERs). Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in August and September 2021, involved 118 ER nurses from three hospitals in the Gyeonggi-do metropolitan area. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS for Windows version 25.0. Results: The mean score of triage competency among ER nurses was 87.63±15.65. In the regression model, age, ER experience, triage experience, critical thinking disposition, and problem solving ability predicted 52% of the triage competency. Both critical thinking disposition and problem-solving ability were noted to be significant (β=.32, p<.001; β=.36, p<.001, respectively). Conclusion: Critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability of ER nurses were identified as major factors in triage competency. To improve ER nurses' triage competency and enhance critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability, a systematic and ongoing program should be developed and implemented.
