  • Critical thinking is essential to implementing the nursing process requiring timely decision making. The study examined the effects of a critical thinking course for nurses in the RN-BSN program. The study used a pre- and post-test design with a control group. The experimental group was a convenience sample of 24 working nurses attending a health college. The control group was 24 fellow nurses. The nursing process-based critical thinking course was provided to the experimental group two and half hours a week for 8 weeks. Teaching methods included lectures followed by a summary and quiz, brainstorming and action learning, and lecturer feedback. A pamphlet about views of professional occupation was provided to the control group. The data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed to examine differences in the test scores before and after the intervention. The scores of critical thinking disposition, problem-solving process, and clinical competence increased significantly in the experimental group but did not in the control group. The difference between the two groups was also statistically significant in critical thinking disposition, problem-solving process, and clinical competence. It is necessary that a robust educational program or training to enhance critical thinking ability of nurses are provided in clinical settings and that nurses keep going on thinking critically in their practice.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of design thinking-based STEAM program for primary and secondary students. The design thinking-based STEAM program dealt with advanced scientific technology issues and it consisted of 8 topics. A questionnaire was developed to explore the change of Science concept awareness, Interest, Self-efficacy, Career consciousness of students through the program. The questionnaire consisted of following 4 areas, such as 'Science concept awareness', 'Interest', 'Career consciousness' and 'Self efficacy'. Pre-post test was conducted to 75 primary and secondary students. As a result of analyzing post-test compared to pre-test, 'Science concept awareness', 'Career consciousness' and 'Self efficacy' of students were improved. And the 'Interest' wasn't changed significantly. Through this research, it can be suggested that the design thinking-based STEAM program can be useful at school education to improve the Science concept awareness, Career consciousness and Self-efficacy of primary and secondary students. It is also proposed that further research of the various areas of interest and other affective variables will be needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Thinking Science program on the cognitive acceleration and cognitive processing skills of the elementary school students. Subjects included 305 5th grade students in three elementary schools. Subjects were divided into the experimental and the control groups. Thinking Science program was implemented to the experimental group over a period of two years. Statistically significant gains on the cognitive acceleration were shown by the experimental group compared with the control group. The intervention effects on the cognitive acceleration were shown for the girls of the elementary schools. It was also found that Thinking Science program exerted significant effect on the development of the cognitive processing skills of the students. The experimental group gained higher scores of attention and simultaneous processing skills compared with the control group. This implied that Thinking Science program was effective not only on the cognitive acceleration but also on the development of the cognitive processing skills as a far-transfer.

  • In STEAM education, contents that has been extracted from a variety of areas, so it can work closely and systematically. Therefore STEAM education requires systems thinking that can be grasped effectively these different disciplines. The purposes of this study are to develop a STEAM program based on systems thinking, and apply the program to the secondary science gifted student in order to investigate the educational effect. A model of the Program developed from previous research and theoretical contents of systems thinking and STEAM. A draft of the STEAM program was developed on the theme of "rocket". A total of 113 students was participated in this study. 100 seventh and 13 eighth graders were enrolled at seigy. A single group pre-post test paired t-test was conducted on them in systems thinking skills. Result of applying the program to the students as follows. The systems thinking ability was improved after the application of the program. 'Mental Model', 'Personal Skill', 'Team Learning', and 'System Analysis', 'Shared Vision' emerged for both improved significantly. In conclusion, the STEAM program based on system thinking improves students' systems thinking skills. This program of results can be helpful in cultivate human resources with the problem solving ability based on system thinking and STEAM literacy by used in public education curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the reflective thinking education so far and to improve the reflective thinking, academic achievement and scientific attitude of elementary school students. Two sixth grade classes were divided into two groups. Experimental group(13 boys, 11 girls) was treated with elementary science class using Reflective Thinking promotion strategies using Thinking maps and comparison group(14 boys, 10 girls) was treated with traditional way. The results of this study were as follows: First, reflective thinking strategy program using thinking maps has positively influenced the reflective thinking of elementary school students. Second, reflective thinking strategy program using thinking maps did not significantly affect elementary school students' academic achievement. Third, reflective thinking strategy program using thinking maps positively influenced elementary school students' scientific attitudes. Fourth, elementary school students' satisfaction with reflective thinking strategy programs using thinking maps was generally high. Most of students felt that this program was useful to learn, and to be interest in science. Based on these results, reflective thinking promotion strategies using thinking maps may be effective for reflective thinking and scientific attitudes of elementary school students.

  • In this study, a block-base coding that could develop computing thinking was applied to Earth science teaching and learning to identify how the perception of computational thinking and scientific attitude was changed as part of creativity education. Based on the results of the study, the conclusions are as follows: First, an Earth science education program was developed using a block-based coding for elementary school students. The 12-hour program was designed for inquiry activities to encourage students to engage in various thinking by providing them with activity-oriented problems. Second, the Earth science education program using a block-based coding showed significant results in confidence in the use of a computer program, integrated learning with a computer, computational thinking, and problem-solving factors with computational thinking. Third, the Earth science education program using block-based coding showed significant differences in the categories of curiosity, criticism, cooperation, persistence, and creativity. It could be judged that it was effective for students in the process of questioning and trying to solve the problem themselves.

  • This research was conducted with an intention to develop a teaching program that possesses a goal of elevating higher thinking ability within the science class and to investigate its effect. The hypothetico-deductive teaching model was developed and its' program was designed to be directly put into the practical use, and apply it in class. The application of the hypothetico-deductive teaching program had a positive effect in the improvement of students' creative thinking ability and critical thinking ability. And it had a positive influence on scientific attitudes. After completing the program the opinions of the students who participated in this research by a poll were gathered and analyzed. The students felt uneasy and had a lot of difficulties during the program activity because they had to keep on thinking newly, critically, and scientifically, but they admitted that they gained the ability to think on their own when the program was completed.

  • In the 21st century, in a Knowledge-Based Information Society, systems thinking is a very important human resources skill in science and technology, which is required in STEAM education in order to understand and solve complex problems. The purposes of this study are: (1) to develop a STEAM education program based on systems thinking; (2) to investigate the effects of the program on students' systems thinking. The systems thinking-based STEAM education program was developed on the basis of 'ADBAS' model (Park & Lee, 2013), and focused on the theme of watermill. A total of 60 high school students participated in this study. The results of this study showed that quantitatively as well as qualitatively, systems thinking skills improved after the treatment. In conclusion, the program we developed in this study can contribute in improving high school students' systems thinking skills and creative problem-solving abilities. The findings of this study may provide useful insights into cultivating human resources with systems thinking skills and creative problem-solving abilities.

  • In this paper, we propose a Science subject program based on programming learning to improve computational thinking ability in middle school. As the necessity of software education rises recently, the subject of information was designated as the mandatory subject in elementary, middle and high schools. In order to cultivate the ability that enables the leaners to search the knowledge in need by themselves and raise troubleshooting method, not the existing indoctrination, his thesis was willing to improve Computational Thinking ability and improve the ability of considering and thinking the matters by using scratch language. For that, this thesis developed and suggested science subject program that utilizes the programming learning.
