  • In this paper, we investigate the properties of CoGe thin film-based galvanic cells as a function of their dimension (cell length, width, etc.) and show their application as sensors to Arduino-based IoT sensor networks to detect water contact. Because these CoGe thin film-based galvanic cells do not require mechanical strains or temperature gradients unlike piezoelectric and thermoelectric energy harvesters, we think that these thin film-based galvanic cells are more suitable for self-powered sensor networks demanding sustainable and robust energy harvesters. In the past, a sputter-deposited CoGe thin film has not been intensively investigated for energy harvesting appilcations. Thus, in this study, we perform a feasibility study of galvanic cells composed of a sputter-deposited CoGe thin film to see if they can be applied as potential self-powered sensors. We believe that this paper will be of great help in developing even more enhanced sensor networks.

  • A flammable gas sensor based on the $SnO_2$thin film deposited by the reactive ion assisted deposition was fabricated and ultra-thin Pd layer as catalyst was adsorbed at surface by ion beam sputtering. The initial oxidation states of Pd catalyst were controlled to investigate the role of Pd in the sensing process of inflammale gas sensor through annealing in air and vacuum respectively. The Pd catalyst existing in pure metallic state showed the sensitivity higher than that of PdO. The result might be closely related to the fact that PdO as a surface acceptor would receive electrons via Pd sub-channel from $SnO_2$, and thus which reduces the sensitivity and delay the response time.

  • This paper presents characteristics of surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensor for detecting volatile gases such as acetone, methanol, and ethanol by measuring phase shift of output signal. A delay-line by combining with a center frequency of 200 MHz was fabricated on S-T Quartz substrates. Using gas chromatography column, the selectivity of the SAW gas sensor were introduced. Experimental results, which show the phase change of output signal under the absorption of volatile gas on sensor surface, were presented. This SAW gas sensor system may be well suited for a high performance electronic nose system.

  • A Rhodamine-based fiber-optic sensor has been developed to detect mercury ions in aqueous environments. The fiber-optic sensor was composed of a mercury-sensing thin film, plastic optical fibers, and a spectrometer. The mercury-sensing thin film with the synthesized Rhodamine derivatives was fabricated with Sol-Gel process. A light emitted by a light source is guided by plastic optical fibers into the thin film in an aqueous solution and a reflected light is analyzed with the spectrometer. The experiment exhibits that an absorbance in the thin film is increased as mercury concentration is increased in the solution and the absorbance by mercury is higher than that by other heavy metals. The fiber-optic sensor exhibits high chromogenic phenomenon of mercury ions among various heavy metals and the correlation between absorbance and mercury concentration in the aqueous environments.

  • This paper describes fabrication and characteristics of metal thin-film pressure sensor for working at high temperature. The proposed pressure sensor consists of a chrom thin-film, patterned on a Wheatstone bridge configuration, sputter-deposited onto thermally oxidized Si membranes with an aluminium interconnection layer. The fabricated pressure sensor presents a low temperature coefficient of resistance, high-sensitivity, low non-linearity and excellent temperature stability. The sensitivity is 1.097 $\sim$ 1.21 mV/V kgf/$cm^2$ in the temperature range of 25 $\sim$ $200^{\circ}C$ and the maximum non-linearity is 0.43 %FS.

  • Characteristics of thin-film NTC thermal sensors fabricated by micromachining technology were studied as a function of the thickness of membrane. The overall-structure of thermal sensor has a form of Au/Ti/NTC/$SiO_{X}$/(100)Si. NTC film of $Mn_{1.5}CoNi_{0.5}O_{4}$ with 0.5 mm in thickness was deposited on $SiO_{X}$ layer (1.2 mm) by PLD (pulsed laser deposition) and annealed at 873-1073 K in air for 1 hour. Au(200 nm)/Ti(100 nm) electrode was coated on NTC film by dc sputtering. By the results of microstructure, X-ray and NTC analysis, post-annealed NTC films at 973 K for 1 hour showed the best characteristics as NTC thermal sensing film. In order to reduce the thermal mass and thermal time constant of sensor, the sensing element was built-up on a thin membrane with the thickness of 20-65 mm. Sensors with thin sensing membrane showed the good detecting characteristics.

  • This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of ceramic thin film type pressure sensors based on Ta-N strain gauges for high temperature applications. Ta-N thin-film strain gauges are deposited onto a thermally oxidized Si diaphragm by RF sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmos[here($N_2$ gas ratio: 8%, annealing condition: 90$0^{\circ}C$, 1 hr.), patterned on a wheatstone bridge configuration, and used as pressure sensing elements with a high stability and a high gauge factor. The sensitivity is 1.097 ~ 1.21 mV/Vㆍkgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in the temperature range of 25 ~ 200 $^{\circ}C$ and the maximum non-linearity resistance), non-linearity than existing Si piezoresistive pressure sensors. The fabricated ceramic thin-film type pressure sensor is expected to be usefully applied as pressure and load sensors that os operable under high-temperature.

The Ta-N thin-film strain gauges are sputter deposited onto a micromachined Si diaphragms with buried cavity for overpressure protectors. The proposed device takes advantages of the good mechanical properties of single crystalline Si as diaphragms fabricated by SDB and electrochemical etch-stop technology, and in order to extend the operating temperature range, it incorporates relatively the high resistance, stability and gauge factor of Ta-N thin-films. The fabricated pressure sensor presents a low temperature coefficient of resistance, high sensitivity, low non-linearity and excellent temperature stability. The sensitivity is $1.097{\sim}1.21mV/V{\cdot}kgf/cm^2$ in the temperature range of $25{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ and the maximum non-linearity is 0.43 %FS.

  • This paper presents characteristics of surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensor for detecting volatile gases such as ethanol gas by measuring the phase shift of output signal. A delay-line with a center frequency of 400 MHz was fabricated on $128^{\circ}$ Y-Z $LiNbO_{3}$ substrates. Experimental results, which showed the phase change of the output signal under the absorption of volatile gas on sensor surface, were presented. The sensitivities of SAW delay lines coated with polyurethane films were greatly increased compared to those for uncoated devices. This SAW gas sensor system may be well suited for a high sensitivity electronic nose system.
