  • We have fabricated porous aluminum oxide using flexible and thin aluminum foils with thickness of 0.025 and 0.2 mm. These foils were anodized with 0.3 M oxalic acid solution after being electropolished with ethanol/perchloric acid. During the anodization, the temperature of the electrolyte was maintained at $9^{\circ}C$ and the anodization voltage was varied between 0.4 and 40 V The surface of the anodized aluminum oxide was studied with a scanning electron microscope. From the scanning electron micrograph, we observed that when the voltage applied was above 1 V for a long period of time, due to a strong electrolysis reaction in electrolyte, the surface of the anodized oxide was destroyed. However, when the anodization voltage was less than 1 V, the anodization process was very stable and lasted much longer. Our results show that for a thin aluminum foil, unlike a thick plate, one requires small anodization voltage less than 1 V to form a porous aluminum oxide for long anodization time.

  • Road is built continuously along with development of industry and cut slope is happened necessarily in road construction. Geoengineers are executing cut slope stability analysis considering various cut slope condition such as topography, geology, hydraulic condition and so on. The Tertiary Jungja Basin is located in the southeastern coastal area of the Korea Peninsula. Jungja Basin area is created by geotectonic movement of the plate after Early Miocene epoch. The northwestern and southwestern boundary of the basin is fault zone. The Basement rock is hornfels (Ulsan Formation). Basin-fills consist of extrusive volcanic rock(Tangsa Andesites), unconsolidated fluviatile conglomerate(Kangdong Formation) and shallow brackish-water sandstone(Sinhyun Formation). The characteristics of cut slopes in this area is different with cut slopes in the other site. Soil layers in this area is unconsolidated sediments and is not formed the weathering and erosion of the rock. So, the depth of soil layer is very thick. Faults of this area are northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest direction. Expandible clay mineral as smectite, chlorite et al. detected from fault gouge using XRD. Therefore, Jungja Basin area must consider the characteristics of the faults and soil layers thickness necessarily cut slopes stability analysis.

  • In this paper, we proposed a novel CB-CPW(Conductor Backed CPW) for suppression of crosstalk caused by PPL(Parallel Plate Line) mode in the millimeter wave frequency. The proposed structure is formed by the GaAs main substrate attached on the Si lossy layer. The PPL mode can be suppressed by the Si lossy layer of conductivity ${\sigma}$, and it reduces the crostalk between the nearby transmission lines. Using 200 um thick Si substrate of ${\sigma}$ = 30S/m, as the lossy layer, the crosstalk can be suppressed below - 40 dB at 60 GHz. The proposed method is costly effective because inexpensive Si wafer is employed to suppress the PPL mode, and it can be used in the various types of millimeter wave applications.

  • This study is concerned with an application of the Boundary Element Method to 2-dimensional elastoplastic stress analysis on the material nonlinearities. The boundary integral formulation adopted an initial stress equation in the inelastic term. In order to determine the initial stress increment, the increment of initial elastic strain energy due to elastic increment in stressstrain curve was used as the convergence criterion during iterative process. For the validity of this procedure, the results of B.E.M. with constant elements and NISA with linear elements where compared on the thin plate with 2 edge v-notches under static tension and the thick cylinder under internal pressure. And this paper compared the results of using unmedical integral with the results of using semi-analytical integral on the plastic domain integral.

  • It has been reported that maximum-likelihood position-estimation (MLPE) algorithms offer advantages of improved spatial resolution and linearity over conventional Anger algorithm in gamma cameras. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performances of the noise models, Poisson and Gaussian, in MLPE for the localization of photons in a small gamma camera (SGC) using NaI(Tl) plate and PSPMT. The SGC consists of a single NaI(Tl) crystal, 10 cm diameter and 6 mm thick, optically coupled to a PSPMT (Hamamatsu R3292-07). The PSPMT was read out using a resistive charge divider, which multiplexes 28(X) by 28(Y) cross wire anodes into four channels. Poisson and Gaussian based MLPE methods have been implemented using experimentally measured light response functions. The system resolutions estimated by Poisson and Gaussian based MLPE were 4.3 mm and 4.0 mm, respectively. Integral uniformities were 29.7% and 30.6%, linearities were 1.5 mm and 1.0 mm and count rates were 1463 cps and 1388 cps in Poisson and Gaussian based MLPE, respectively. The results indicate that Gaussian based MLPE, which is convenient to implement, has better performances and is more robust to statistical noise than Poisson based MLPE.

  • We investigate a surface-micromachined polysilicon microgyroscope, whose resonant frequencies are electrostatically-tunable after fabrication. The microgyroscope with two oscillation nudes has been designed so that the resonant frequency in the sensing mode is higher than that in the actuating mode. The microgyroscope has been fabricated by a 4-mask surface-micrormachining process, including the deep RIE of a $6{\mu}m$-thick LPCVD polycrystalline silicon layer. The resonant frequency in the sensing mode has been lowered to that in actuating mode through the adjustment of an inter-plate bias voltage; thereby achieving a frequency matching at 5.8kHz under the bias voltage of 2V in a reduced pressure of 0.1torr. For an input angular rate of $50^{\circ}/sec$, an output signal of 20mV has been measured from the tuned microgyroscope under an AC drive voltage of 2V with a DC bias voltage of 3V.

  • The main objective of the current research is estimating the flexural behavior of ferrocement Ribbed Plates reinforced with composite material. Experimental investigation was carried out on fifteen plates; their dimensions were kept constant at 1200 mm in length, 600 mm width and 100 mm thick but with different volume fraction of steel reinforcement and number of ribs. Test specimens were tested until failure under three line loadings with simply supported conditions over a span of 1100 mm. Cracking patterns, tensile and compressive strains, deformation characteristics, ductility ratio, and energy absorption properties were observed and measured at all stages of loadings. Experimental results were compared to analytical models using ANSYS 10 program. Parametric study is presented to look at the variables that can mainly affect the mechanical behaviors of the model such as the change of plate length. The results showed that the ultimate strength, ductility ratio and energy absorption properties of the proposed ribbed plates are affected by the volume fraction and the type of reinforcement, and also proved the effectiveness of expanded metal mesh and woven steel mesh in reinforcing the ribbed ferrocement plates. In addition, the developed ribbed ferrocement plates have high strength, ductility ratio and energy absorption properties and are lighter in weight compared to the conventional RC ribbed plates, which could be useful for developed and developing countries alike. The Finite Element (FE) simulations gave good results comparing with the experimental results.

  • Three kinds of aqueous solution of tobacco extracts are used as a new experimental material. It is measured how the operating condition, freezing point, viscosity as fundamental properties have the relation to concentration and temperature of the solution. The results of this study are obtained as follows. 1) The freezing point of the solution $(t_m)$ is presented; $t_m=-{\frac{18.6X}{170-{\frac{X}{100}}(170+18)}}$ 2) The correlation of the viscosity, the temperature and the concentration of the solution is followed; $log_{10{\mu}}={\frac{1585}{T}}+2.11{\frac{X}{100-X}}-5.50$ 3) The ice crystals whose circumference is a toothed wheel are made from high concentrated solution, and the thick plate shaped ones are done from the low concentrated solution.

  • In this study, we report the fabrication of functional complex fibers, which have been studied widely globally for numerous applications. Here, we fabricated conductive complex fibers with antibacterial properties by coating metal ions on the surface of plastic (polypropylene) fibers using the electroless and electrochemical deposition. First, we polished the polypropylene melt-blown fiber surface and obtained an absorbing Pd seed layer on its surface. Subsequently, we substituted the Pd with Cu. Bis-3-sulfopropyl-disulfide disodium salt (SPS), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and ethylene thiourea (ETU) were used as the brightener, carrier, and leveler, respectively for the electroplating. We focused on most achieving the stable plating condition to remove dendrites, which are normally during electroplating metals so that smooth layer is formed on the fiber surface. The higher the amount of SPS, the higher was the extent of irregular plate-like growth. Many irregularities in the form of round spheres were observed with increase in the amount of PEG and ETU. Hence, when the additives were used separately, a uniform coating could not be obtained. A stable coating was obtained when the three additives were combined and a uniform 5-9 μm thick copper layer with a stable morphology could be obtained around the fiber. We believe that our results can be applied widely to obtain conductive fibers with antibacterial properties and are useful in aiding research on conductive lightweight composite fibers for application in information technology and robotics.

  • This study was undertaken to compare by Atomic Force Microscope the effects of various finishing and polishing instruments on surface roughness of filling and veneering composite resins. Seven composite resins were studied : Silux Plus (3M Dental Products, U.S.A.), Charisma (Heraeus Kulzer, Germany), Prisma THP (L.D.Caulk, Dentsply, U.S.A.), Photoclearfil (Kuraray, Japan), Cesead (Kuraray, Japan), Thermoresin LC (GC, Japan), Artglass (Heraeus Kulzer, Germany). Samples were placed and polymerized in holes (2mm thick and 8.5mm in diameter) machined in Teflon mold under glass plate, ensuring excess of material and moulded to shape with polyester matrix strip. Except control group (Polyester matrix strip), all experimental groups were finished and polishied under manufacturer's instructions. The finishing and polishing procedure were : carbide bur (E.T carbide set 4159, Komet, Germany), diamond bur (composite resin polishing bur set, GC, Japan), aluminum-oxide disc (Sof-Lex Pop-On, 3M Dental Products, U.S.A.), diamond-particle disc (Dia-Finish, Renfert Germany), white stone bur & rubber point( composite finishing kit, EDENTA, Swiss), respectively. Each specimens were evaluated for the surface roughness with Atomic Force Microscope (AutoProbe CP, Park Scientific Instruments, U.S.A.) under contact mode and constant height mode. The results as follows : 1. Except Thermoresin LC, all experimental composite resin groups showed more rougher than control group after finishing and polishing(p<0.1). 2. A surface as smooth as control group was obtained by $Al_{2}O_{3}$ disc all filling composite resin groups except Charisma and all veneering composite resin groups except Thermoresin LC(p<0.05). 3. In case of Thermoresin LC, there were no statistically significant differences before and after finishing and polishing(p>0.1). 4. Carbide bur, diamond bur showed rough surfaces in all composite resin groups, so these were inappropriate for the final polishing instruments.
