  • The characteristics of fluid-elastic instability and effects of turbulent excitations for the KSNP steam generator tubes were investigated numerically. The information for the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator has been obtained by using the ATHOS3-MOD1 code and the flow-induced vibration(FIV) analysis has been conducted by using the PIAT(program for Integrity assessment of SG tube) code. The KSNP steam generator has the concentrated plugging zone at the vicinity of the stay cylinder inside the SG. To investigate the cause of the concentrated tube plugging zone, the FIV analysis has been performed for various column and row number of the steam generator tubes. From the results of FIV analysis the stability ratio due to the fluid-elastic instability and vibrational amplitude due to the turbulent excitation in the concentrated plugged zone have a trend of larger values than those of the outer concentrated tube Plugging zone.

  • There are many parameters that affect the natural circulation flow, such as height difference, heating power size, pipe diameter, system pressure and inlet temperature and so on. In general analysis the heating power is often regarded as a uniform distribution. The ANSYS-CFX numerical analysis software was used to analyze the flow heat transfer of supercritical water under different heating power distribution conditions. The distribution types of uniform, power increasing, power decreasing and sine function are investigated. Through the analysis, it can be concluded that different power distribution has a great influence on the flow of natural circulation if the total power of heating is constant. It was found that the peak flow of supercritical water natural circulation is maximal when the distribution of heating power is monotonically decreasing, minimal when it is monotonically increasing, and moderate at uniform or the sine type of heating. The simulation results further reveal the supercritical water under different heat transfer conditions on its flow characteristics. It can provide certain theory reference and system design for passive residual heat removal system about supercritical water.

  • STREAM - a lattice transport calculation code with method of characteristics for the purpose of light water reactor analysis - has been developed by the Computational Reactor Physics and Experiment laboratory (CORE) of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). Recently, efforts have been taken to develop a photon module in STREAM to assess photon heating and the influence of gamma photon transport on power distributions, as only neutron transport was considered in previous STREAM versions. A multi-group photon library is produced for STREAM based on the ENDF/B-VII.1 library with the use of the library-processing code NJOY. The developed photon solver for the computation of 2D and 3D distributions of photon flux and energy deposition is based on the method of characteristics like the neutron solver. The photon library and photon module produced and implemented for STREAM are verified on VERA pin and assembly problems by comparison with the Monte Carlo code MCS - also developed at UNIST. A short analysis of the impact of photon transport during depletion and thermal hydraulics feedback is presented for a 2D core also from the VERA benchmark.

  • The thermal environment on lunar surface is more severe than that of earth's surface or low earth orbit because of the long daytime and nighttime due to 28 days of rotation cycle of moon. Thus, analyzing heat flux on lunar lander at potential landing sites is important to determine the landing site in its initial design phase. In this study, thermal model of lunar regolith that can simulate lunar surface temperature was constructed for analyzing thermal characteristics according to the potential landing sites of lunar lander. The heat flux analyses were performed various latitudes of equator, mid-latitude, polar regions, lunar mare and highland. In addition, we also investigated the heat flux of lunar lander when it is landed on adjacent area to hill.

  • This study experimentally investigated dicyclohexylammonium 2-cyanoacrylate (CA) as a potential comonomer for polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon fiber precursors. The P(AN-CA) copolymers with different CA contents (0.19-0.78 mol% in the feed) were polymerized using solution polymerization with 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile) as an initiator. The chemical structure and composition of P(AN-CA) copolymers were determined by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental analysis, and the copolymer composition was similar to the feeding ratio of the monomers. The effects of CA comonomer on the thermal properties of its copolymers were characterized differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in nitrogen and air atmospheres. The DSC curves of P(AN-CA) under nitrogen atmosphere indicated that the initiation temperature for cyclization of nitrile groups was reduced to around $235^{\circ}C$. The heat release and the activation energy for cyclization reactions were decreased in comparison with those of PAN homopolymers. On the other hand, under air atmosphere, the P(AN-CA) with 0.78 mol% CA content showed that the initiation temperature of cyclization was significantly lowered to $160.1^{\circ}C$. The activation energy value showed 116 kJ/mol, that was smaller than that of the copolymers with 0.82 mol% of itaconic acids. The thermal stability of P(AN-CA), evidenced by thermogravimetric analyses in air atmosphere, was found higher than PAN homopolymer and similar to P(AN-IA) copolymers. Therefore, this study successfully demonstrated the great potential of P(AN-CA) copolymers as carbon fiber precursors, taking advantages of the temperature-lowering effects of CA comonomers and higher thermal stability of the CA copolymers for the stabilizing processes.

  • Knowing the mean free paths (MFPs) of thermal phonons is an essential step in performing heat transfer analysis for nanomaterials, and in determining the optimum design for tailoring the heat transfer characteristics of nanomaterials. In this study, we present a method that can be used to calculate accurately the phonon MFP spectra of nanostructures based on simple phonon kinetic theory. Here, the kinetic theory may be employed by extracting only the diffusive-transport part of the phonon spectrum (i.e., the MFPs are less than a thermal length). By considering phonon dispersion and polarization effects, the phonon MFP distributions of silicon at room temperature are calculated from phonon transport properties and the spectral MFP. Our results are validated by comparison with those of the first principle and MFP spectroscopy data.

  • The study is actively being performed to increase fuel injection pressure of common rail system among countermeasures to meet the emission regulation strengthen of the Diesel engine. The common rail fuel injection tube in such ultra high pressure common rail system has the weakest structural characteristics against vibration that is generated by fuel injection pressure and pulsation during engine operation and driving. Thus the extreme durability is required for common rail fuel injection tube, and the drawing process is being magnified as the most important technical fact for strength of seamless pipe that is the raw material of common rail tube. In this respect, we analyzed the characteristic of dimension and stress variation of the ultra high pressure common rail fuel injection tube by variation of Die and Plug angle in drawing process. Based on the analysis, we tried to obtain the raw material strength of common rail fuel injection tube for applying to the ultra high pressure common rail system. As a result, Plug angle is more important than entry angle of Die and we could obtain the target dimension and strength of the ultra high pressure common rail fuel injection tube through optimization of Plug angle.

  • Tertbutylperoxymaleate is the one of the organic peroxides used as a raw material of initiator formulations of artificial marble manufacturing. In this study, the thermal decomposition characteristic of TBPM was evaluated using the differential scanning calorimeter in the air and nitrogen circumstance. Regardless of the reaction atmosphere, TBPM showed the exothermic peak due to the drastic decomposition reaction below 130 ℃. The activation energy estimated by dynamic methods had a range of 203~217 kJ/mol and that estimated by model-free analysis method had a range of 118~232 kJ/mol with a thermal conversion. And the ADT24, the temperature that lead to the maximum heating rate within 24 hours, was evaluated as (80~95) ℃ using the estimated activation energy.

  • PV module is installed in various outdoor conditions such as solar irradiation, ambient temperature, wind speed and etc. Increase in solar cell temperature within PV module aggravates the behaviour and durability of PV module. It is difficult to measure temperature among respective PV module components during PV module operating, because the temperature within PV module depends on thermal characteristics of PV module components materials as well as operating conditions such as irradiation, outdoor temperature, wind etc. In this paper, simulation by using finite element method is conducted to predict the temperature of each components within PV module installed to outdoor circumstance. PV module structure based on conventional crystalline Si module is designed and the measured values of thickness and thermal parameters of component materials are used. The validation of simulation model is confirmed by comparing the calculated results with the measured temperatures data of PV module. The simulation model is also applied to estimate the thermal radiation of PV module by front glass and back sheet.

  • Ni oxide thin films were formed through annealing treatment in the atmosphere after Ni thin films deposited by a r.f. magnetron sputtering method and then electric and material properties were analyzed for application to thermal sensors. Resistivity of Ni thin films decreased after annealing treatment at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and 40$0^{\circ}C$ for five hours due to crystallization of Ni thin films but the value increased over 45$0^{\circ}C$ because of Ni thin film's oxidation. Resistivity values of Ni thin films were in the range of 10.5 $\mu$Ωcm/$^{\circ}C$ to 2.84${\times}$10$^4$$\mu$Ωcm/$^{\circ}C$ according to the degree of Ni oxidation. Also temperature coefficient of resistance(TCR) values of Ni oxide thin films depended on the degree of Ni oxidation such as 2,188 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ to 5,630 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of 0 $^{\circ}C$∼150 $^{\circ}C$. The results demonstrate that Ni oxide thin films of annealing treatment at 40$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hours could be more advantageous than pure Ni thin films and Pt thin films from a point of output properties and TCR, applied to thermal sensors.
