  • This study investigates the characteristics of thermal decomposition of an epoxy-based intumescent paint using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and numerical simulation. A mathematical and numerical model is introduced to describe mass loss profiles of the epoxy-based intumescent coating induced by the thermal decomposition process. The decomposition scheme covers a range of complexity by employing simplified 4-step sequential reactions to describe the simultaneous thermal decomposition processes. The reaction rates are expressed by the Arrhenius law, and reaction parameters are optimized to fit the degradation behavior seen during thermogravimetric (TG) experiments. The experimental results show a major 2-step degradation under nitrogen and a 3-step degradation in an air environment. The experiment also shows that oxygen takes part in the stabilization of the intumescent coating between 200 and $500^{\circ}C$. The simulation results show that the proposed model effectively predicts the experimental mass loss as a function of time except for temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$, which were intentionally not included in the model. The maximum error in the simulation was less than 3%.

  • Limestone (CaCO3, calcium carbonate), which is used as a raw material in the portland cement and steel industry, emits CO2 through decarbonation by high temperatures in the manufacturing process. To reduce CO2 emissions by the use of raw materials like limestone, it has been proposed to replace limestone with various industrial by-products that contain CaO but less or none of the carbonated minerals, that cause CO2 emissions. Loss of Ignition (LOI), Thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) are used to quantitative the amount of CO2 emission by using these industrial by-products, but CO2 emissions can be either over or underestimated depending on the characteristics of by-product materials. In this study, we estimated CO2 contents by LOI, TG, IR and DTG(Differential Thermogravimetric analysis) of calcite(CaCO3) and samples that contain CO2 in the form of carbonate and whose weight increases by oxidation at high temperatures. The test results showed for CaCO3 samples, all test methods have a sufficient level of reliability. On the other hand, for the CO2 content of the sample whose weight increases at high temperature, LOI and TG did not properly estimate the CO2 content of the sample, and IR tended to overestimate compared to the predicted value, but the estimated result by DTG was close to the predicted valu e. From these resu lts, in the case of samples that contain less than a few percent of CO2 and whose weight increases during the temperature that carbonate minerals decompose, estimating the CO2 content using DTG is a more reasonable way than LOI, TG, and IR.

  • In this study, thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA) was used to investigate the effect of urea concentration and heating rate on the ammonia($NH_3$) formation process from urea solution. A newly designed pipe nozzle was inserted through a 1,000 N${\ss}$(C)/h oil firing boiler to compare the DeNOx efficiencies between the upward and downward nozzle. This experiment reveals the effect of path which an urea droplet goes through. Urea solution showed the same TGA graph without regard to the presence of oxygen. Heating rate had a great influence on the weight loss trend. But the concentration of urea solution between 10% and 40% did not affect so much the thermal decomposition temperature. Therefore, heating rate is more important factor on the thermal decomposition of urea than the concentration of urea solution. Three nozzles located at different positions showed similar DeNOx efficiencies such as 68.1%, 71.8%, 70.8% at the same temperature. Even though urea solution was injected for the same zone, the injection direction made much difference in DeNOx efficiency. A upward nozzle showed 68.1% and downward nozzle 9.5%. This results illustrate the importance of heating rate.

  • A Bi$_{4}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ (BIT) thin film is prepared by sol-gel method using acetate precursors and evaluated whether it could be applied to NVFRAM (Non-Volatile Ferroelectric RAM). The drying and the annealing temperature are 40$0^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$, respectively and they are determined from the DT-TG (Differential Thermal-Thermal Gravimetric) analysis. The BIT thin film deposited on Pt/Ta/SiO$_{2}$/Si substrate shows orthorhombic perovskite phase. The grain size and the surface roughness are about 100 nm and 70.2$\AA$, respectively. The dielectric constant and the loss tangent at 10 KHz are 176 and 0.038, respectively, and the leakage current density at 100 ㎸/cm is 4.71 $mutextrm{A}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$. In the results of hysteresis loops measured at $\pm$250 ㎸/cm, the remanent polarization (Pt) and the coercive field (Ec) are 5.92 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 86.3 ㎸/cm, respectively. After applying 10$^{9}$ square pulses of $\pm$5V, the remanent polarization of the BIT thin film decreases as much as about 33% from 5.92 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of initial state to 3.95 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • Aluminum dusts, from micro to nano-scale, are widely used in various applications such as propulsion and pyrotechnic compounds because of high burning rate. In this study, the pyrolysis hazard of aluminum dusts with different median size (sized by 70 nm, 100 nm, $6{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$) were investigated experimentally. The thermal decomposition characteristics of aluminum dusts with the variation of heating rate were investigated using TGA (Thermo gravimetric analysis) and was estimated the minimum ignition temperature from temperature of weight gain in nano and micro-sized aluminum dusts with different diameter. In the same condition of heating rate, the temperature of weight gain in aluminum dust layers increased with increasing of particle size and increased with increasing of heating rates in air. From the results, it was estimated that the pyrolysis hazard of aluminum dusts decrease with increasing of mean diameter.

  • Waste water is disposed to sewage disposal plant by underground PE double wall pipes. Various processes have been introduced to join PE pipes, but most of these methods have many disadvantages such as costs, lack of reliability and difficulties in joining, etc. Recently butt welding has been paid much attention to joint PE pipes as this process has many advantages such as cost, safety and reliability. In this study, newly developed heat plate, a patent-pending heat plate with a groove, was used to butt-weld PE double wall pipes with different misalignment gaps to simulate real underground conditions, and the butt welding temperature of PE pipe was determined by thermal analysis (Thermal Gravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis). The resulting joining characteristics of double wall pipes were compared with those from a conventional heat plate, in terms of stiffness, flattening and leakage tests. The results from the stiffness and flattening test showed that there were no big differences between the butt-welded joints made from these two plates. From the leakage test, although PE pipes welded with a conventional heat plate did leak below the required test conditions (10 min. at 0.75kgf/cm2), the pipes welded with a patent-pending grooved heat plate did not show any leakage even at a pressure 1.5 times higher than the required conditions. It was noted that by utilizing a grooved heat plate more complete fusion at the pipe joints could be obtained, which in turn induced a high quality joints.

  • Redox characteristics of metal oxide for hydrogen production by thermochemical water-splitting were investigated. $CuFe_2O_4$ as a redox pair that had a different molar ratio of Cu and Fe were prepared by co-precipitation method. Hydrogen production consisted of water-splitting step and thermal reduction step was performed below 1200K. Redox characteristics of Cu-ferrites were studied using the thermal gravimetric analysis technique. Also, structure change of Cu-ferrite during thermal reduction was investigated using the high temperature controlled XRD. In results, oxygen release of Cu-ferrite during the thermal reduction was initiated at oxygen site combined with Cu. Consequently, oxygen release amount of Cu-ferrite was increased with increase of Cu molar ratio of Cu-ferrite. It was found that thermal reduction of Cu-ferrite was begun at $875^\circ{C}$. It was confirmed that structure of Cu-ferrite was changed to metal and cation excess metal oxide during the thermal reduction step.

  • The addition of a limestone filler(LF) to fill into the voids between cement and aggregate particles can reduce the cementitious paste volume. In previous studies, it has been found that the addition of LF to reduce the cementitious paste volume would substantially increase the compressive strength, and reduce the heat generation. This paper aim to evaluate the influence of LF contents on the hydration kinetics and compressive strength. Hydration kinetics were evaluate using heat of hydration, ignition loss and thermal analysis. The heat of hydration was measured using Isothermal Calorimetry. The degree of hydration was measured using ignition loss. Hydration product analysis was carried out by Thermal Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis. The results show that the addition of LF reduces not only the initial setting time and heat of hydration peak, also degree of hydration and rate of strength development at early age increase with the addition of LF. It can be concluded the LF fills the pore between cement particles due to formation of carboaluminate, which may accelerate the setting of cement pastes.

  • A hear transfer model was developed to calculate the temperature distribution in the rotary kiln incinerator of municipal solid waste. The thermo-gravimetric characteristics of waste and the gas-to-waste heat transfer coefficient were determined by comparing the experimental results and model prediction. With this, heat transfer rates by existing heat transfer mechanisms were calculated to be compared each other. The effects of treatment capacity, calorific value of waste, and flow rate and temperature of combustion air on the temperature distribution in the rotary kiln incinerator were predicted by the model developed in this work.

  • The polyurethane prepolymers, which were previously synthesized from 2,4-toluene disocyanate(2,4-TDI) and polypropylene glycol(PPG), were chain extended by ethylene diamine or hydroxyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane(HTPMS) having hydroxy group at both ends of the chain, giving polyurethaneurea(PU) and polyurethane containing HTPMS segment(SiPU), respectively. In thermal gravimetric analysis, PU was almost completely degraded at $500^{circ}$ but SiPU showed about 11% residue at the same temperature. Suspension of SiPU and pigment showed more good compatibility than that of PU and pigment. The crocking fastness, migration fastness and solvent wicking were enhanced to 4.5 grades, 4 grades and 4 grades, respectively.
