Biosensors, which are analysis devices used to convert biological reactions into electric signals, are made up of a receptor component and a signal transduction part. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are new types of carbon nanoparticles that have drawn a significant amount of attention in nanoparticle research. The unique features exhibited by GQDs and CQDs are their excellent fluorescence, biocompatibility, and low cytotoxicity. As a result of these features, carbon nanomaterials have been extensively studied in bioengineering, including biosensing and bioimaging. It is extremely important to find biomaterials that participate in biological processes. Biomaterials have been studied in the development of fluorescence-based detection methods. This review provides an overview of recent advances and new trends in the area of biosensors based on GQDs and CQDs as biosensor platforms for the detection of biomaterials using fluorescence. The sensing methods are classified based on the types of biomaterials, including nucleic acids, vitamins, amino acids, and glucose.
Ge quantum dots in $SiO_2$ thin films were prepared by r.f. magnetron co-sputtering using a Ge, $SiO_2$ composite target. The size of quantum dots was modulated by controlling of substrate temperature during depositing and annealing of samples deposited at certain substrate temperature. A series of work was done on the influence of preparing parameters on the growth of quantum dots, and a discussion on the formation and growth of quantum dots under different preparation parameters is given.
Shape ellipticity dependence of the exciton fine energy levels in CdTe and CdSe nanocrystal quantum dots were compared theoretically by considering the crystal structure and the Coulomb interaction of an electron and a hole. While quantum dot ellipticity changes from an oblate to prolate quantum dot via spherical shape, both the fine energy levels and the dipole moment in wurtzite structure of a CdSe quantum dot change linearly for ellipticity. In contrast, CdTe quantum dots were found to show a level crossing between the bright and dark exciton states with a significant change of the dipole moment due to the cubic structure. Shape ellipticity dependence of the optical nonlinearities in CdTe and CdSe nanocrystal quantum dots was also calculated by using semiconductor Bloch equations. For a spherical shape quantum dot, only $1^L$ dominates the optical nonlinearities in a CdSe quantum dot, but both $1^U$ and $0^U$ contribute in a CdTe quantum dot. As excitation pulse area becomes strong (${\sim}{\pi}$), the optical nonlinearities of both CdSe and CdTe quantum dots are mainly governed by absorption saturation. However, in the case of a prolate CdTe quantum dot, the real part of the nonlinear refractive index becomes relatively significant.

In this work, we synthesized alloy-core InZnP quantum dots, which are more efficient than single-core InP quantum dots, using a solution process method. The effect of synthesis conditions of alloy core on optical properties was investigated. We also investigated the conditions that make up the gradient shell to minimize defects caused by lattice mismatch between the InZnP core and ZnS is 7.7%. The stable synthesis temperature of the InZnP alloy core was 200℃. Quantum dots consisting of three layered ZnSe gradient shell and single layered ZnS exhibited the best optical property. The properties of quantum dots synthesized in 100 ml and in 2,000 ml flasks were almost equal.

In this talk, I will introduce two topics. The first topic is the polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using graphene oxide quantum dots as emissive center. More specifically, the energy transfer mechanism as well as the origin of white electroluminescence in the PLED were investigated. The second topic is the facile synthesis of eco-friendly III-V colloidal quantum dots and their application to light emitting diodes. Polymer (organic) light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using quantum dots (QDs) as emissive materials have received much attention as promising components for next-generation displays. Despite their outstanding properties, toxic and hazardous nature of QDs is a serious impediment to their use in future eco-friendly opto-electronic device applications. Owing to the desires to develop new types of nanomaterial without health and environmental effects but with strong opto-electrical properties similar to QDs, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted great interest as promising luminophores. However, the origin of electroluminescence (EL) from GQDs incorporated PLEDs is unclear. Herein, we synthesized graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) using a modified hydrothermal deoxidization method and characterized the PLED performance using GOQDs blended poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) as emissive layer. Simple device structure was used to reveal the origin of EL by excluding the contribution of and contamination from other layers. The energy transfer and interaction between the PVK host and GOQDs guest were investigated using steady-state PL, time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experiments revealed that white EL emission from the PLED originated from the hybridized GOQD-PVK complex emission with the contributions from the individual GOQDs and PVK emissions. (Sci Rep., 5, 11032, 2015). New III-V colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized using the hot-injection method and the QD-light emitting diodes (QLEDs) using these CQDs as emissive layer were demonstrated for the first time. The band gaps of the III-V CQDs were varied by varying the metal fraction and by particle size control. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) results show that the crystal states of the III-V CQDs consist of multi-phase states; multi-peak photoluminescence (PL) resulted from these multi-phase states. Inverted structured QLED shows green EL emission and a maximum luminance of ~45 cd/m2. This result shows that III-V CQDs can be a good substitute for conventional cadmium-containing CQDs in various opto-electronic applications, e.g., eco-friendly displays. (Un-published results).

In this study, the relationship of images and sounds of the animations "Dots" and "Loops" which Norman McLaren animated with his Animated sound technique when he worked at Guggenheim museum at New York, are analyzed through the audiovisual analysis theory by Michel Chion, and through the theory of synchronism/asynchronism and parallelism/counterpoint by Siegfried Kracauer. For the results of the analysis, there are a few difference between "Dots" and "Loops" regarding the aspect of sound arrangement and expressive aspect of abstract animation. However, there are being of two main elements of sound, composing with monophony sound, making musical structure with sound effects, and the emphasizing of parallelism with synchronization bewteen images and sounds in common with both "Dots" and "Loops". In "Dots" and "Loops", there are close correlations between pitch of sound and arrangement/shape of image, between loudness of sound and size of image, and between length of sound and length/shape of image. The image and sound of "Dots" and "Loops" have equal relationship each other, rather than subordinate relationship according as image become sound and the sound become new image with the animated sound technique. "Dots" and "Loops" show tendency of minimal art and music video. Since these two films, and remind about the new approach to sound creation in today's animation production.
In this study, the Ag nano-dots structure was applied to the textured wafer surface to improve the light trapping effect of crystalline silicon solar cell. The Ag nano-dots structure was formed by the annealing of Ag thin film. Ag thin film deposition was performed using a thermal evaporator. The effect of light trapping was compared and analyzed through light reflectance measurements. The optimization process of the Ag nano-dots structure was made by varying the thickness of Ag thin film, the annealing temperature and time. The thickness of Ag thin films was in the range of 5 ~ 20 nm. The annealing temperature was in the range of 450~650℃ and the annealing time was in the range of 30 ~ 60 minutes. As a result, the light reflectance of 10 nm Ag thin film annealed at 650℃ for 30 minutes showed the lowest value of about 9.67%. This is a value that is about 3.37% lower than the light reflectance of the sample that has undergone only the texturing process. Finally, the change of the light reflectance by the HF treatment of the sample on which the Ag nano-dots structure was formed was investigated. The HF treatment time was in the range of 0 ~ 120 seconds. As a result, the light reflectance decreased by about 0.41% due to the HF treatment for 75 seconds.
In this study, the Ag nano-dots structure and silicon nitride film were applied to the textured wafer surface to improve the light trapping effect of mono-crystalline silicon solar cell. Ag nano-dots structure was formed by performing a heat treatment for 30 minutes at 650℃ after the deposition of 10nm Ag thin film. Ag thin film deposition was performed using a thermal evaporator. The silicon nitride film was deposited by a Hot-wire chemical vapor deposition. The effect of light trapping was compared and analyzed through light reflectance measurements. Experimental results showed that the reflectivity increased by 0.5 ~ 1% under all nitride thickness conditions when Ag nano-dots structure was formed before nitride film deposition. In addition, when the Ag nano-dots structure is formed after deposition of the silicon nitride film, the reflectance is increased in the nitride film condition of 70 nm or more. When the HF treatment was performed for 60 seconds to improve the Ag nano-dot structure, the overall reflectance was improved, and the reflectance was 0.15% lower than that of the silicon nitride film-only sample at 90 nm silicon nitride film condition.
Increasing harmful effects of climate change, such as its effect on water scarcity, has led to a focus on developing effective water purification methods to obtain pure water. Additionally, rising levels of water pollution is increasing levels of environmental degradation, calling for sources of water treatment to remove contaminants. To purify water, osmotic processes across a semipermeable membrane can take place, and recent studies are showing that incorporating nanoparticles, including carbon quantum dots (CQDs), graphene carbon dots (GQDs), and graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) are making thin film composite (TFC) membranes more effective by increasing water flux while maintaining similar levels of salt rejection, increasing the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface, showing bactericidal properties, exhibiting antifouling properties to prevent accumulation of bacteria or other microorganisms from reducing the effectiveness of the membrane, and more. In the review, the synthesis process, applications, functionality, properties, and the role of several types of quantum dots are discussed in the composite membrane for water purification.

We investigated the temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy of colloidal InZnP/ZnSe/ZnS (core/shell/shell) quantum dots with varying ZnSe and ZnS shell thickness in the 278~363 K temperature range. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence of the InZnP-based quantum dot samples reveal red-shifting of the photoluminescence peaks, thermal quenching of photoluminescence, and broadening of bandwidth with increasing temperature. The degree of band-gap shifting and line broadening as a function of temperature is affected little by shell composition and thickness. However, the thermal quenching of the photoluminescence is strongly dependent on the shell components. The irreversible photoluminescence quenching behavior is dominant for thin-shell-deposited InZnP quantum dots, whereas thick-shelled InZnP quantum dots exhibit superior thermal stability of the photoluminescence intensity.
