  • The D-optimal design criterion for precise parameter estimation in nonlinear regression analysis is called the determinant criterion because the determinant of a matrix is to be maximized. In this thesis, we derive the gradient and the Hessian of the determinant criterion, and apply a QR decomposition for their efficient computations. We also propose an approximate form of the Hessian matrix which can be calculated from the first derivative of a model function with respect to the design variables. These equations can be used in a Gauss-Newton type iteration procedure.

  • In this paper we consider empirical Bayes estimation of the hazard rate and survival probabilities with right censored data under the assumption that the hazard function is constant over the period of observation and the prior distribution is gamma. We provide an estimator of the first derivative of the prior moment generating function that converges at each point to the true value in $L_2$ and use it to obtain, easy to compute, asymptotically optimal estimators under the squared error loss function.

  • A new geldanamycin (GDM) derivative was discovered and isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces hygroscopicus 17997. Its chemical structure was elucidated as thiazinogeldanamycin by LC-MS, sulfur analysis, and NMR. The addition of cysteine to the fermentation medium significantly stimulated the production level of thiazinogeldanamycin, suggesting cysteine as a precursor of thiazinogeldanamycin production. Although showing a decreased cytotoxicity against HepG2 cancer cells, thiazinogeldanamycin exhibited an improved water solubility and photostability. Thiazinogeldanamycin may represent the first natural GDM derivative characterized so far that uses GDM as its precursor. Its appearance also clearly indicates that an appropriate end-point of fermentation is of critical importance for the maximal production of GDM by Streptomyces hygroscopicus 17997.

  • A shkionin derivative was isolated from the roots of Lithospermum erythrorhizon with silica gel column chromatography and preparative TLC. The structure of the isolated pigment was identified as propionylshikonin by NMR and mass spectrometric analysis. The isolation of propionylshiknin was for the first time in the nature.

  • For the analysis of Kirchhoff plate bending problems, a new meshless method is implemented. For the satisfaction of the C¹ continuity condition in which the first derivative is treated as another primary variable, Hermite interpolation is enforced on standard reproducing kernel particle method. In order to impose essential boundary conditions on solving C¹ continuity problems, shape function modifications are adopted. Through numerical tests, the characteristics and accuracy of the HRKPM are investigated and compared with the finite element analysis. By this implementation, it is shown that high accuracy is achieved by using HRKPM fur solving Kirchhoff plate bending problems.

  • In 1996, Br$\ddot{u}$ck studied the relation between f and f' if an entire function f shares one value a CM with its first derivative f' and posed the famous Br$\ddot{u}$ck conjecture. In this work, we generalize the value a in the Br$\ddot{u}$ck conjecture to a small function ${\alpha}$. Meanwhile, we prove that the Br$\ddot{u}$ck conjecture holds for a class of meromorphic functions.

  • In the paper, we have two purposes. Firstly, we estimate the hyper-order of an entire function which shares two functions with it's first derivative, and two examples are given to show the conclusion is sharp. Secondly, we generalize the Br$\ddot{u}$ck conjecture with the idea of sharing functions.

  • Muilti-dimensional feature vector matching algorithm uses multiple features such as intensity, gradient, variance, first or second derivative of a pixel to find correspondence pixels in stereo images. In this paper, we proposed a new method for adjusting automatically the weight of feature in multi-dimensional feature vector matching considering sharpeness of a pixel in feature vector distance curve. The sharpeness consists of minimum and maximum vector distances of a small window mask. In the experiment we used IKONOS satellite stereo imagery and obtained accurate matching results comparable to the manual weight-adjusting method.

  • A simple analytical procedure using FT-NIR for the rapid determination of individual ingredients was evaluated. Direct measurements were made by reflection using a reflectance accessory, by transmittance using tablet accessory and turn table. FT-NIR spectral data were transformed to the first derivative. Partial Least Square Regression(PLSR) was applied to quantify near-infrared (NIR) spectra of 2 ingredients. These calibration models were cross-validated (leave-one-out approach). The prediction ability of the models was evaluated on ambroxol tablets and compared with the real values in manufacturing procedure. (omitted)

  • The Hurwitz-type Euler zeta function ζE(z, q) is defined by the series ${\zeta}_E(z,\,q)\,=\,\sum\limits_{n=0}^{\infty}{\frac{(-1)^n}{(n\,+\,q)^z}},$ for Re(z) > 0 and q ≠ 0, -1, -2, . . . , and it can be analytic continued to the whole complex plane. An asymptotic expansion for ζ'E(-m, q) has been proved based on the calculation of Hermite's integral representation for ζE(z, q).
