  • A test method has been attempted to estimate the soil stiffness by measuring and analyzing dynamic signals of stress waves reflected at the bottom end of the SPT rod contacting a soil deposit. Before conducting a real size testing, a series of parametric studies were conducted in this paper to examine the applicability and the theoretical adequacy of the test method. As a result of these studies, it has been shown that the most significant influence factor affecting the amplitude ratio of the reflected wave to the incident wave at the rod-soil interface was the variation of soil stiffness. Also, the variation of the amplitude ratio was found to be closely related with the variation of impedance ratio of the soil deposit to the SPT rod. As a result, a potential of the test method could be proved to estimate the impedance and the elastic modulus of the soil deposit interfaced with the SPT rod using the test method.

  • The shutoff unit was designed to provide rapid insertion of neutron absorbing material into the reactor core to shutdown the reactor quickly and also to withdraw the absorber slowly to avoid a log-rate trip. Four shutoff units were installed on the HANARO reactor but the half-core test facility was equipped with one shutoff unit. The reactor trip or shutdown is accomplished by four shutoff units by insertion of the shutoff rods. The shutoff rod(SOR) is actuated by a directly linked hydraulic cylinder on the reactor chimney, which is pressurized by a hydraulic pump. The rod is released to drop by gravity, when triplicate solenoid valves are de-energized to vent the cylinder. The hydraulic pump, pipe and air supply system are provided to be similar with the HANARO reactor. The shutoff rod drops for 647mm stroke within 1.13 seconds to shut down the reactor and it is slowly inserted to the full down position, 700mm, with a damping. We have conducted the drop test of the shutoff rod in order to show the performance and the structural integrity of operating system of the shutoff unit. The present paper deals with the 647mm drop time and the withdrawal time according to variation of the pool water temperature, the water level and the core flow.

  • A statistical methodology is developed for calculating the nuclear fuel pod internal pressure of Korean PWR fuel in order to reduce over-conservatism of the current KAERI deterministic methodology. The developed statistical methodology employs the response surface method and Monte Carlo calculation. The simple regression equation for the rod internal pressure is derived by taking into account the various fuel fabrication-related and fuel performance model-related parameters. The validity of the regression equation is examined by the F-test, $R^2$-method and Cp-test The internal pressure predicted by the regression equation is in good agreement with that calculated by he computer code using the KAERI deterministic methodology. The distribution of the internal pressure from the Monte Carlo calculation is found to be normal. Comparison of the 95/95 rod internal pressure predicted by the developed statistical methodology with the maximum rod internal pressure by the deterministic methodology shows that the developed statistical methodology reduces significantly over-conservatism of the deterministic methodology.

  • In this study, fretting wear tests of nuclear fuel rods have been performed by using two kinds of spacer grid springs with a concave and a convex shape in room temperature dry and distilled water conditions. The objectives were to examine the variation of the wear mechanism with increasing fretting cycles and to evaluate the difference of the wear debris detachment behavior at each test environment. From the test results, the wear volume of each spring condition increased with increasing fretting cycles regardless of the test environments. However, the wear rate did not show a regular tendency and apparently changed with increasing fretting cycles. This is because the formation of the wear particle layer and/or the variation of the contact condition between the fuel rod and spring surfaces could affect a critical plastic deformation for detaching the wear debris. Based on the test results, the relationship between the wear behavior of each spring shape and test environment condition, and the variation of the surface characteristics are discussed in detail.

  • In this paper, we describe about the field test of polymeric long rod insulator for rail way. For the test, insulators were mounted at the feeder line system at Kuro base station and were exposed to environmental, electric, and mechanical stress. During the test service, the leakage current was been monitoring and stored the data by the leakage current measuring system that was specially constructed. After about 6 months, diagnostic tests for evaluation of the installed insulators were conducted. The test results developed that the developed polymeric insulator is valid to use for rail way.

  • The reliability and accuracy of the information on control rod position are very important to the reactor safety and the design of the core protection system. In this study, a thorough investigation on the RSPT(Reed Switch Position Transmitter) type control rod position indication system and its actual implementation in the exiting nuclear power plants in Korea was performed first. A design of the control rod position indication system using reed switch for the CEDM on the system-integrated reactor SMART was developed based on the position indicator technology identified through the investigation. The feasibility of the design was evaluated by test of manufactured control rod position indicator using reed switch for SMART.

  • When the ground current is injected into the adjacent ground electrode, the potential interference is caused between ground electrodes, the ground potential interferences have been largely studied with power frequency fault currents. Many attempts to find the frequency-dependent grounding impedance report that the high frequency grounding impedance is very different with the ground resistance. This paper presents experimental data on the frequency-dependent potential interference effects in the vicinity of ground rod. The ground potential rises around the test ground rod of 4 or 6[m] were measured and discussed. As a result, the ground potential rises and potential interference factor are decreased with decreasing the grounding impedance. It was found that the lowering of grounding impedance is critical to reduce the ground potential interference effects.

  • Fatigue fracture of engine connecting-rod bolts is encountered frequently during the developement of high-speed engines. Only the engine dyno test is a currently reliable fatigue durability assessment method. It is because the available rig tests cannot mimic the engine running condition completely, and because the finite element analysis cannot provide realistic stresses near the bolt thread that is modeled as a cylinder. This paper introduces a methodology to assess the fatigue durability of the connecting-rod bolts using the finite element analysis. The methods to contruct the bolt model, to extract the critical bolt stresses for the fatigue analysis, and to obtain the bolt fatigue endurance limit experimentally are discussed. Reliability of the method is verified indirectly.

  • Grounding system insures a reference potential point for electric devices and also provides a low impedance path for fault currents or transient currents in the earth. The ground impedance as function of frequency is necessary for determining its performance since fault currents could contain a wide range of frequencies. In this paper, the grounding resistance, grounding impedance and transient grounding impedance are measured by using 3-point fall-of-potential method in order to analyse grounding characteristics of the copper and concrete rod grounding electrodes. An equivalent transfer function model of the ground impedance and transient grounding impedance are identified from the measured values by using ARMA method and evaluated by comparing the conventional grounding impedance.

  • In this investigation, fracture mechanism of the pre-cracked beams strengthened with FRP-Rod and GSP(Glass Fiber-Steel Plate) were experimentally studied by the repeating load test according to the three different loading speeds. In the experiments, it was identified that pre-crack in the damaged beams led the significant fracture type of the strengthened beams and loading speed did not influence the behaviors of the fractures. On the other hand, strengthened beams by GSP have more large increasing effects of the strength comparing to beams strengthened with FRP-Rod, but they have a brittle behaviors in fracture.
