Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cognitive intervention on myths about the uterus and anxiety in women undergoing a hysterectomy. Method: Subjects were admitted to G hospital in Busan for a hysterectomy. Of the subjects, 37 were in the experimental group and 36 were in the control group. Data was collected from December 1st, 2005 to February 28th, 2006. A hand-out, including knowledge about the uterus and the healing process, was used in the cognitive intervention. The tool for myths about the uterus had 10 questions developed by a researcher from previous research. In addition, the levels of anxiety(STAI) were measured. The data was analyzed by $x^2$-test, t-test, paired t-test, and pearson correlation coefficient with the SPSS 12.0/pc program. Results: After providing cognitive intervention, the level of belief in the myths about the uterus of the experimental group decreased significantly more than the control group. In addition, the level of anxiety of the experimental group decreased significantly more than the control group. There is a significant correlation between the myth about the uterus and anxiety. Conclusion: Cognitive intervention is a useful nursing intervention that decreases anxiety in women undergoing a hysterectomy. It is recommended to further use the appropriate cognitive intervention in nursing practice.

The etiology of most psychiatric disorders is still incompletely understood. However, growing evidence suggests that stress is a potent environmental risk factor for depression and anxiety. In rodents, various stress paradigms have been developed, but psychosocial stress paradigms have received more attention than non-social stress paradigms because psychosocial stress is more prevalent in humans. Interestingly, some recent studies suggest that chronic psychosocial stress and social isolation affects mainly anxiety-related behaviors in mice. However, it is unclear whether chronic non-social stress induces both depression- and anxiety-related phenotypes or induces one specific phenotype in mice. In the present study, we examined the behavioral consequences of three chronic non-social stress paradigms: chronic predictable (restraint) stress (CPS), chronic unpredictable stress (CUS), and repeated corticosterone-HBC complex injection (RCI). Each of the three paradigms induced mild to severe depression/despair-like behaviors in mice and resulted in increased immobility in a tail suspension test. However, anxiety-related phenotypes, thigmotaxis and explorative behaviors, were not changed by the three paradigms. These results suggest that depression- and anxiety-related phenotypes can be dissociated in mouse stress models and that social and non-social stressors might affect brain circuits and behaviors differently.
Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of aromatherapy massage on the preoperative anxiety of stomach cancer patients. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group non synchronized design. The data were collected during the period of October 2 to December 30, 2005 at H Hospital in Seoul. The subjects were 40 patients who were operated under general anesthesia for stomach cancer. State anxiety, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate were measured on the day before surgery and the preoperative period. Data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$ test, independent t-test, paired t-test. Results: Hypothesis 1 that the level of preoperative state anxiety of the experimental group who received aromatherapy massage is lower than that of the control group who did not received aromatherapy was supported(p=.004). Hypothesis 2 the physiological index of the preoperative anxiety of the experimental group who received aromatherapy is lower than that of the control group who did not received aromatherapy. Conclusion: According to these results, aromatherapy hand massage can be regarded as a partially effective nursing intervention that relives anxiety of surgical patients and decreases the blood pressure level.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (K-GAI). Methods: Two hundreds and thirty six elderly were participated to test K-GAI. Goldberg's short screening scale for anxiety was tested for criterion validity. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was used for measuring sensitivity and specificity. Results: The obtained internal consistency was 0.88. There were significant associations between test and retest results. K-GAI scores was significantly associated with Goldberg's short screening scale for anxiety (r=.694, p<.001). We found that a score of seven and greater was optimal for a criterion of anxiety among elderly Koreans. At this cut point, sensitivity was 78.9% and specificity was 73.1%. Conclusion: The K-GAI displayed good psychometric properties. This tool would be useful for early detection of anxiety among elderly Koreans with various situations including cognitive disorder, low education, or physical disability.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of foot reflexzone massage on state - anxiety and discomfort of ovarian cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Method: A quasi experimental design with a non equivalent control group and non synchronized design was used. The experiment was conducted from October 1, 2003 to September 30, 2004. The subjects consisted of 40 patients admitted to C University Hospital. Twenty subjects were assigned to the experimental group and received foot reflexzone massage everyday for 3 days. The other 20 subjects were in the control group and received routine care. Foot reflexzone massage was done on both feet of the subjects for 30 minutes for 3 days using standard protocol. The 'State-Anxiety Inventory' developed by Spielberger was used to measure the degree of state-anxiety. Discomfort was assessed using the 'Symptom Distress Scale' of McCorkle and Young. Data was analyzed by a SAS program using t-test, Wilcoxon signed rank sum test and Wilcoxon rank sum test. Results: State-anxiety and discomfort of subjects receiving foot reflexzone massage were significantly lower than those of the control group. Conclusion: These findings indicate that foot reflexzone massage could be an effective nursing intervention for relieving state-anxiety and discomfort in ovarian cancer patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of aromatherapy hand massage on the anxiety of gastroscopy clients. Method: The data were collected during the period from March 10 to May 20, 2004 at S-Hospital in Kyungi-Do. There were sixty subjects, 30 for the experimental and 30 for the control group. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, $X^2$-test and paired t-test with SPSS program. Result: The pulse rate was reduced significantly, but there were no significant differences in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure between two groups. The status anxiety of experimental group was lower than the control group, but there was no significant difference statistically. Conclusion: Aromatherapy could be useful in the nursing practice, and be utilized as a way of nursing intervention to reduce anxiety of the client in specific clinical situations.
Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of an experience-focused prenatal program on stress, anxiety, childbirth confidence, and maternal-fetal attachment for women in their first pregnancy. Methods: The participants were 57 pregnant women at 32 weeks or more of a first pregnancy who agreed to participate in this study. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$ test, and Fisher's exact test using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: The experimental group showed significant differences in stress, anxiety, childbirth confidence, and maternal-fetal attachment from the control group. Conclusion: The four-week experience-focused prenatal program can be used for women in their first pregnancy to reduce their stress and anxiety and to increase their childbirth confidence and maternal-fetal attachment.
Purpose: This study utilized a nonequivalent control group pre-post test design to test the effects of foot massage on anxiety and sleep satisfaction response in preoperative patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Method: There were 40 subjects in the study (20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group). The experimental group received foot massage once a day for 2 days before their operation. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics including mean, percentage, Chi-square, and t-test. Results: There were significant differences between experimental group and control group in the level of the state anxiety, pulse rate, and sleep satisfaction. Conclusions: Foot massage was effective in reducing anxiety and improving sleep satisfaction in abdominal surgical patients before their operation. Thus, foot massage may be used as an independent nursing intervention. This intervention can be performed anywhere, requires no special equipment, is noninvasive, and does not interfere with patients' privacy.

The author reported treatment experiences of 4 cases with test anxiety. The first one was a 15 year old boy with problem of mild attention deficit which caused test anxiety and academic underachievement around the 8th grade in middle school. The second and the third cases were brother and sister. The test anxiety was caused basically due to the problem of mother child relationship. their mother expected too much of her son and always urged him to study and never left him alone. The mothers practically gave up her whole life to devote to oversee her son's academic achievement and her daughter experienced affectional deprivation. The fourth case, a 16 year old boy, was a borderline personality disorder with extreme anger and hostility toward his parents who controled him too much. Different therapeutic approaches appropriate for different cases were described and the relationship between test anxiety and various psychopathology was discussed.
Purpose: This study identifies the effects of meridian massage on relieving facial paralysis, pain, and anxiety in Bell's palsy patients. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pre-test/post-test design was used for the study. The subjects were 51 Bell's palsy patients (experimental group=26, control group=25) of D University's oriental medicine hospital. The experimental group received a meridian massage for 20 min three times a week for two weeks. The data were analyzed with the following methods by using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program: $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test. Results: The facial paralysis scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. The pain and anxiety scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group. Conclusions: The results suggest that meridian massage (applied by nurses) has beneficial effects on facial paralysis, pain, and anxiety in patients suffering from Bell's palsy. Thus, meridian massage is recommended as an alternative nursing intervention program for patients with Bell's palsy.
