  • An engineered barrier system (EBS) for the deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) is composed of a disposal canister, buffer material, gap-filling material, and backfill material. As the buffer fills the empty space between the disposal canisters and the near-field rock mass, heat energy from the canisters is released to the surrounding buffer material. It is vital that this heat energy is rapidly dissipated to the near-field rock mass, and thus the thermal conductivity of the buffer is a key parameter to consider when evaluating the safety of the overall disposal system. Therefore, to take into consideration the sizeable amount of heat being released from such canisters, this study investigated the thermal conductivity of Korean compacted bentonites and its variation within a temperature range of 25 ℃ to 80-90 ℃. As a result, thermal conductivity increased by 5-20% as the temperature increased. Furthermore, temperature had a greater effect under higher degrees of saturation and a lower impact under higher dry densities. This study also conducted a regression analysis with 147 sets of data to estimate the thermal conductivity of the compacted bentonite considering the initial dry density, water content, and variations in temperature. Furthermore, the Kriging method was adopted to establish an uncertainty metamodel of thermal conductivity to verify the regression model. The R2 value of the regression model was 0.925, and the regression model and metamodel showed similar results.

  • The knowlege of thermal properties of rough rice has become of greate importance to the analysis of heat and mass transfer phenomenon in rice drying and storage process. Some information is available on the thermal properties of rough rice in foreign countries but is not available for these properties in Korea. A fundamental study was made to determine the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of rough rice with line source method and to select current and resistance suitable for these properties from investigating the effect of current and resistance of heating wire on the temperature rise. The result of this study may be summarized as follows ; 1. Even through the power per unit length of heating wires is about the same, the tendency of temperature rise showed a little difference among them , and the suitable range of it for thermal properties was found to be 3.56-5.37w/m. 2. the most desirable resistance and current of heating wire was 18.40 ohm/m, 0.44 amperes among three kinds of heating wires and currents, respectively. because it took 13 minutes or so for the heating wire to reach equilibrium temperature. 3. The thermal conductivity of rough rice was 0.120-0.130 w/m$ ^\circ C$. and thermal diffusivity of it was $5.8210 $\times10^{-8} -9.7529 $\times10^{-8} m^2 /s.$ 4.The thermal conductivity showed a little difference in variation with resistance of heating wire but the variation of current of heating wire at the same resistance did not affect the thermal conductivity , and the thermal diffusivity was not affected by the variation of resistance and current.

  • This paper describes a study on the abnormal behavior of the electrical characteristics of the (n)GaAs/Ti/Pt/Au Schottky contacts prepared by the two techniques of electron beam deposition and rf sputtering and after an annealing treatment. The samples were characterized by I-V and C-V measurements carried out over the temperature range of 150 - 350 K both in the as prepared state and after a 300 C, 30 min. anneal step. The variation of ideality factor with forward bias, the variation of ideality factor and barrier height with temperature and the difference between the capacitance barrier and current barrier show the presence of a thin interfacial oxide layer along with barrier height inhomogenieties at the metal/semiconductor interface. This barrier height inhomogeneity model also explains the lower barrier height for the sputtered samples to be due to the presence of low barrier height patches produced because of high plasma energy. After the annealing step the contacts prepared by electron beam have the highest typical current barrier height of 0.85 eV and capacitance barrier height of 0.86 eV whereas those prepared by sputtering (at the highest power studied) have the lowest typical current barrier height of 0.67 eV and capacitance barrier height of 0.78 eV.

  • We suggest a novel temperature detection method utilized in temperature monitoring system. Suggested method detects temperature variation by using $R_{ds(on)}$ characteristics of MOSFET, while conventional methods are using extra devices such as a temperature sensor or an over-temperature detection transistor. For voltage detection between drain and source, 10 bits resolution ADC is needed. Therefore possible measurement signal range is about ten mV. If detected temperature's voltage exceed protection temperature's voltage then controller generates OT (Over Temperature) signal to stop MOSFET's trigger signal. Whole process of measurement is controlled by software. Experimental results show that the developed temperature monitoring system can provide the suitable temperature monitoring method and difference between detected and data sheet value of the suggested system is about $3\%$.

  • Ultrasonic measurements are made in egg white to study the properties of the solution of the natural protein. The high-Q ultrasonic resonator method is used to get the ultrasonic absorption spectra over the range 0.2-10 ㎒ at 20℃. It is proportional to the 1.25th power of the frequency. The gelation process caused by heat is studied from the change in the velocity and the absorption. at 3 ㎒ using the pulse echo overlap technique over the range of 10-80℃. The absorption decreases with increasing temperature up to 60℃ where it turns up sharply and rapidly increases thereafter. The strong absorption in the gel region is described by the interaction between the solution and the network structure made of protein. Very slow variation in time elapse is observed after the temperature is quickly raised. It would be a real-time observation of the network building process and the characteristic time for the process is shown to be 400 min. A hysteresis phenomenon with respect to the temperature is observed. This phenomenon is associated with the memorizing effect of the network structure of protein of the gel.

  • We report the salient features of the magnetic properties of amorphous TM70Cr5Si10B15(TM=Fe, Co, Ni) alloys. The temperature dependence of magnetization for amorphous ribbons were measured by a SQUID and a VSM from 5 K to 700 K under an external field of 10 kOe. Except TM70Cr5Si10B15 that shows a paramagnetic behaviour, both Fe and Co based amorphous alloys show a typical ferromagnetic thermo-magnetization curves. For these two ferromagnetic alloys, the saturation magnetization in the temperature range from 5 K to about 0.4 Tc can be descrived by the Bloch relation, Ms (T)=Ms(0) [1-BT3/2-CT5/2]. The spin wave stiffness constants and the range of exchange interaction were analyzed from the magnetization behaviour. The variation of the magnetic properties are discussed and compared with the composition of the alloys.

  • With the intention of investigating the breakdown properties of oil-immersed transformer oils in temperature range of 20∼100[$^{\circ}C$], we are made researches AC breakdown in the gap of 500∼2,500[$\mu\textrm{m}$]. The classification for the physical properties of oil for oil-immersed transformer by FTH and $^1$H-NMR experiments was confirmed to type of mineral oils. As the dependance of breakdown properties due to electrode gap length variation, breakdown voltage was found increasing according to the increase of gap, while dielectric strength was decreasing. As a result the characteristics for AC breakdown, It goes to prove that the breakdown voltage was increased to 90[$^{\circ}C$] but decreased over 90[$^{\circ}C$] in the temperature range. Also, breakdown voltage was found increasing in the increase of gap and the rising of temperature according to Weibull distribution.

  • The bias characteristics due to the changes of temperature and temperature gradient of fiber coil are investigated in fiber-optic gyroscope. The bias performance is degraded with the changes of temperature and temperature gradient of fiber coil. The temperature compensation using both the temperature-dependent bias measurement and the temperature-induced error model of fiber-optic gyroscope improves the bias stability about 3 times as much as the uncompensated original case, which leads to very stable bias performance over the temperature range from $-35^{\circ}C$ to $+77^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper we present an LDO based on an error amplifier. The designed error amplifier has a gain of 89.93dB at low frequencies. This amplifier's Bandwidth is 50.8MHz and its phase margin is $59.2^{\circ}C$. Also we proposed a BGR. This BGR has a low output variation with temperature and its PSRR at 1 KHz is -71.5dB. For a temperature variation from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $125^{\circ}C$ we have just 9.4mV variation in 3.3V LDO output. Also it is stable for a wide range of output load currents [0-200mA] and a $1{\mu}F$ output capacitor and its line regulation and especially load regulation is very small comparing other papers. The PSRR of proposed LDO is -61.16dB at 1 KHz. Also we designed it for several output voltages by using a ladder of resistors, transmission gates and a decoder. Low power consumption is the other superiority of this LDO which is just 1.55mW in full load. The circuit was designed in $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process.

  • The spatial distribution of sea water temperature variation pattern in the South-eastern coastal region of Korea was studied by empirical orthogonal function (E. O. F) analysis in several depths from surface to 300m using the monthly mean water temperature averaged for 23 years, water mass analysis by T. S diagram and sectional diagram of water temperature. Typical type of water temperature variation in this area can be divided into surface (0m-50m), subsurface (100m-150m) and intermediate (200m-300m) layer. The first mode value of water temperature change on the surface layer showed $99\%$ of total variation, and decreased with the increase of the depth. It is deduced to be in the range of $60-70\%$ on the 300m layer. The representative type of water temperature fluctuation by the first mode in each layer is as follows. Water temperature change in the surface layer showed a seasonal variation. In the subsurface layer, it is governed by the interaction of the Tsushima Warm Current water with the cold water and by the heat transfer process from the upper layer. In the intermediate layer, water temperature variation seems to be governed by the advection of the bottom cold water.
