In this paper, we propose a study to develop and apply competency-based elementary school teacher training programs for maker education according to the steps of the DACUM-based Systematic Curriculum and Instructional Development (SCID) procedure model. According to the stages of the DACUM-based SCID (Systematic Curriculum and Instructional Development) procedure model, the educational goals, contents, objects, time, methods, and prerequisite subjects of the maker education training program were derived, and based on this, a competency-based training program was developed. In addition, the effectiveness of the program was verified by applying the developed program. As a result of applying the developed training program and evaluating its effectiveness, it was confirmed that overall positive results were found. We expect this training program to be of help in strengthening the competency of elementary school teachers in maker education.
This study investigates the process of PCK formation for 2017 novice teachers in Busan. This study was conducted parallel to quantitative research using the H-PCK measurement tool as well as qualitative research methods through an open questionnaire and after-interview. Consequently, the H-PCK level of novice teachers was 3.51. The knowledge of perspective on home economics education (KP) was 3.87, knowledge of home economics curriculum (KC) was 3.37 and the knowledge of home economics instructional strategies (KI) was 3.39. Study participants reported that curriculum knowledge, curriculum content knowledge, and teaching strategy knowledge were formed through preparation for appointment; however, it was not possible to judge if PCK was formed for the restructuring ability or the reconstruction ability. Knowledge related to curriculum content was learned through teacher training, internet teacher community, and internet information materials. Knowledge of teaching strategies was learned through 1-2 teaching consulting or peer scholarship. It is necessary to revise the university curriculum (such as expansion of curriculum education, expansion of experience in teaching practice, and actual case study) order to form PCK. Second, it should be developed and operated various training programs for the formation of home economics education curriculum knowledge. Third, it is necessary to organize a nationwide system to support the mentor. In the future, it is necessary to study PCK analysis for each unit and topic as well as to explain methods that can be provided to field teachers.
This paper aims to develop a program which cultivates statistical ability for elementary students. For this purpose, I examined the relationship between mathematical thinking and statistical thinking. I developed statistical programs including classification, discussion of data, generating statistical problem and project program. As result, this study suggests implications for further elementary statistical education.
The purpose of this study was to explore the adaptability of U.S. multiple-choice items to measure Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) in Korea. For this purpose, the authors selected the number and operations form B which was developed by Learning Mathematics for Teaching (LMT) project at the University of Michigan and then adapted items in terms of general cultural context, school cultural context, mathematical substances, and language in Korea. The survey was administrated to 77 Korean in-service teachers who had more than three years of teaching experiences. Based on the survey, the authors compared the data to that of U.S. teachers who had participated California's Mathematics Professional Development Institute. As a result, the survey measures less knowledge Korean teachers than more knowledgable Korean teachers and there are strong correlations of relative item difficulties between Korean teachers and U.S. teachers for both Content Knowledge (CK) items and Knowledge of Content and Students (KCS) items. This study implies the future direction for developing items to measure teacher knowledge as well as designing effective teacher education programs.
The purposes of this study were to develop science education programs for changing students' science research ethical views, and to investigate the types and features of their views, and to examine their changes overtime. The subject of this study was one 6th grade class(41 students) at an elementary school located in Seoul. The scientific research ethical education programs developed in the study was applied through 8 lessons over 4 weeks. The results of this study show that 3 types of science research ethical views were appeared in elementary students participated in this study: 'human technology centered views', 'value ecology centered views' and the mixed views. The numbers of students, who changed their views from type I or type II to type III, were significantly increased. Students with type III appeared to actively involve in classroom activities aligned with science research ethical issues. The results imply that intended science ethical education program can affect students' ethical views on science. It is also important to aware that teacher's effective assistance and help contribute to students' meaningful changes on their traditional scientific ethical views. Educational implications on science education are discussed.

Two project-centered secondary school programs were studied as part of an effort to elucidate successful components for science reform-based curriculum development. The Teachers for Exciting Science (TES), and Foundational Approaches in Science Teaching (FAST) programs in Korea and U.S., respectively, are project-centered programs because their curricula are centered on the activities initiated and engaged in by the students. Students serve as principal investigators in their projects, and teachers serve as guides. Both programs were analyzed based on criteria such as curriculum design, teaching, lives of students, lives of teachers, evaluation of program, from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). In the programs, teachers and students directed the development of curricula and their implementation. Students assumed teacher roles as mentors of other students. And emphasis was on development of communication skills through student-delivered talks and written papers, and professional development of teachers as educators and scientists. Participation in TES stimulated secondary school student interest in science, encouraged inquiry thinking, increased achievement in learning science, and promoted better awareness of science related to real life. FAST students practice laboratory and field techniques, experimental design, hypothesis formation, generalization, and practical implications of research as academic and applied disciplinarians. These project-centered programs have been successfully implemented in field, lab, and classroom curricula for secondary science education. Comparison of these programs will provide an opportunity for identifying key elements instrumental in successful implementation of guidelines for science education, as measured through successful outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between maternal knowledge of childcare and mother-teacher communication. The participants consisted of 240 mothers whose children were enrolled at seven childcare centers in Seoul. Respondents were asked to complete a series of questionnaires reporting the important aspects of their childcare, the frequency of mother-teacher communication, and individual characteristics. Information about childcare's structural and procedural characteristics were obtained through interviews with the directors of those centers. The results indicated that mothers only answered 45.5% of questions correctly, and reported a lack of knowledge about childcare services in their respective centers. In particular, mothers didn't have information about caregivers (e.g, education, year of job experience, license, etc). Actual maternal knowledge was significantly correlated with the length of time which mothers were associated with their childcare and the frequency of mother-teacher communication. In addition, there were significant differences in the maternal knowledge regarding childcare services according to mothers' educational level. The results of this study imply that effective parent education programs are needed for mothers who want to enroll their children in childcare centers.
Objectives : This study is to investigate factors that predispose the oral health education patterns of teachers at preschool institutions such as kindergartens and day nurseries, for which a comparison was made among the patterns, whereto the PRECEDE model was applied. Methods : A survey was conducted by two visits, a preliminary survey and a main survey, and teachers at the foregoing institutions personally filled in the questionnaire. Results : 1. With relation to epidemiological and social diagnosis, the largest number of respondents (53.7%) agreed on the need for oral health education, but at the same time, the largest number of respondents (40.3%) was unsatisfactory with oral health education given by them. 2. With relation to behavioral diagnosis, there were many cases where respondents taught their students to brush their teeth after meals and snacks. Oral health education was focused on safety and injuries. There was no significant intergroup difference (p>0.05). 3. Predisposing factors (a subcategory of educational diagnosis) showed the following results: As for the frequency of oral health education, most respondents at both institutions answered preferred once every six month (p>0.05). In the case of oral health checkup, 75.4% of respondents at kindergartens preferred once a year. 72.2% of respondents at day nurseries preferred the same frequency. They showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). In enabling factors, it was found that most respondents at both institutions collected information and teaching materials from mass media and public health centers respectively. In enabling factors, insufficient teaching materials, media and knowledge were found to be obstacles to oral health education. Conclusions : Oral healthcare providers' cooperation is required to diversify away from tooth brushing-centered education and to enrich oral health education. In addition, continuous supplements are required to make teachers at preschool institutions acquire expert knowledge and give oral health education with confidence. Moreover, it needs to train them for various education programs as well as to support them with educational media. Lastly, family members' cooperation is required to develop oral health education programs.
In this study, I investigated how pre-service teachers (PSTs) proved three geometric problems by using Geometer's SketchPad (GSP) software. Based on observations in class and results from a test of geometric reasoning, eight PSTs were sorted into four of the five van Hiele levels of geometric reasoning, which were then used to predict the PSTs' levels of reasoning on three tasks involving proofs using GSP. Findings suggested that the ways the PSTs justified their geometric reasoning across the three questions demonstrated their different uses of GSP depending on their van Hiele levels. These findings also led to the insight that the notion of "proof" had somewhat different meanings for students at different van Hiele levels of thought. Implications for the effective integration of technology into pre-service teacher education programs are discussed.

The data for the present paper was a part of a large research project conducted to assess preservice teachers' knowledge related to fractions and place value at a southwestern public university in 2007. The study utilized convenience sampling, consisting of 150 elementary preservice teachers who were enrolled in a mathematics methods course before their student teaching. The results demonstrated preservice teachers' knowledge of teaching comparison, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions was insufficient even though these should be basic knowledge. Teacher preparation programs should emphasize profound knowledge for teaching fractions using representations.
