Ultrafine TaC-5%Co composite powders were synthesized by spray conversion process using tantalum oxalate solution and cobalt nitrate hexahydrate(Co($(NO_3)_2$ . 6$H_2O$). The phase of Ta-Co oxide powders had amorphous structures after calcination below 50$0^{\circ}C$ and changed $Ta_2O_5$, $TaO_2$ and $CoTa_2O_6$ phase by heating above $600^{\circ}C$. The calcined Ta-Co oxide powders were spherical agglomerates consisted of ultrafine primary particles <50 nm in size. By carbothermal reaction, the TaC phase began to form from 90$0^{\circ}C$. The complete formation of TaC could be achieved at 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. The observed size of TaC-Co composite powders by TEM was smaller than 200 nm.
Magnetic properties of FeTaN and FeTaC films deposited by DC magnetron reactive sputter were investigated, and correlated with their microstructures. The optimum magnetic properties of Hc : 0.25 Oe, Bs : 14.5 kG, and ${\mu}'$ : 4000 (5MHz) are observed in the $Fe_{78.8}Ta_{8.5}N_{12.7}$ film, and Hc : 0.25 Oe, Bs : 14.5 kG, and ${\mu}'$ : 2700 (5MHz) in the $Fe_{75.6}Ta_{8.1}C_{16.3}$ film. In both FeTaN and FeTaC films with minimum grain size show the best soft magnetic properties. Thermal stability of the soft magnetic properties of FeTaN is found to be higher than FeTaC for similar compositons. TaN and TaC particles form to retard the growth of $\alpha$-Fe grains. TaN particles in FeTaN show higher efficiency in retarding the grain growth during heat treatments resulting the higher thermal stability, compared to TaC particles in FeTaC films.

Using the wastes of Ta powder fabrication process for capacitor, TaC powder was synthesized by SHS method. In previous to synthesis, the waste Ta was needed of milling and deoxidization treatments for active reaction and prevention of oxidation. In SHS reaction, it was found that the TaC single phase was obtained in composition of 5~6wt.%C. The reaction temperature was affected by the compaction pressure of the specimens, exhibiting the maximum values at 1600psi, respectively.

Carbon/carbon composites (C/C) have been widely studied in the aerospace field because of their excellent thermal shock resistance and specific strength at high temperature. However, they have the problems that is easily oxidized and deteriorated under atmospheric environment. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the CVD coating of ultra-high-temperature ceramics to C/C has become an important technical issue. In this study, thermodynamic calculations were performed to TaC CVD coating on C/C by FactSage 6.2 program. The Ta-C phase diagrams were constructed with the results of thermodynamic calculations in the Ta-C-H-Cl system. Based on the Ta-C phase diagram, the experimental conditions were designed to confirm the deposition of various phases such as TaC single phase, TaC + C and $TaC+Ta_2C$ by varying the composition of Ta/C ratio. The deposited films were found to be in good agreement with the predicted phases.

NbC, HfC, TaC, and their solid solution ceramics have been identified as the best materials for ultrahigh-temperature ceramics. However, their structural stability and elastic properties are mostly unclear. Thus, we investigated structure and elastic properties of (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C solid solutions via ab initio calculations. Our calculated results show that the stability of (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C increases with the increase of Hf and Ta content, and (Nb1-xHfx)C is more stable than (Nb1-xTax)C at the same content of Hf and Ta. The lattice constants decrease with increasing of Hf and Ta content. (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C carbides are mechanically stable and brittle. Bulk modulus of (Nb1-xTax)C increases with increasing Ta content. In contrast, bulk modulus of (Nb1-xHfx)C decreases with increasing Hf content. Hardness of solid solutions shows the highest values at the (Nb0.25Ta0.75)C and (Nb0.75Hf0.25)C. In particular, (Nb0.75Hf0.25)C shows the highest hardness for the current system. The results indicate that the overall mechanical properties of (Nb1-xHfx)C solid solutions are superior to those of (Nb1-xTax)C solid solutions. Therefore, controlling the Hf and Ta element and content of the (Nb1-xTax)C and (Nb1-xHfx)C Solid solution is crucial for optimizing the material properties.
Tantalum nitride (TaNx) thin films were grown utilizing an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted direct current (DC) sputtering, and 20-100% improved microhardness values were obtained. The detailed microstructural changes of the TaNx films were characterized utilizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as a function of nitrogen gas fraction and ICP power. As nitrogen gas fraction increases from 0.05 to 0.15, the TaNx phase evolves from body-centered-cubic (b.c.c.) TaN0.1, to face-centered-cubic (f.c.c.) δ-TaN, to hexagonal-close-packing (h.c.p.) ε-TaN phase. By increasing ICP power from 100 W to 400 W, the f.c.c. δ- TaN phase becomes the main phase in all nitrogen fractions investigated. The higher ICP power enhances the mobility of Ta and N ions, which stabilizes the δ-TaN phase like a high-temperature regime and removes the micro-voids between the columnar grains in the TaNx film. The dense δ-TaN structure with reduced columnar grains and micro-voids increases the strength of the TaNx film.

순수 Mo와 Mo-Nb, Mo-Ta($\leq$10 at% Nb.

An ultra-high temperature ceramic, tantalum carbide, has received much attention for its favorable characteristics: a superior melting point and chemical compatibility with carbon and other carbides. One drawback is the high temperature erosion of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites. To address this drawback, we deposited TaC on C/C with silicon carbide as an intermediate layer. Prior to the TaC deposition, the $TaCl_5-C_3H_6-H_2$ system was thermodynamically analyzed with FactSage 6.2 and compared with the $TaCl_5-CH_4-H_2$ system. The results confirmed that the $TaCl_5-C_3H_6-H_2$ system had a more realistic cost and deposition efficiency than $TaCl_5-CH_4-H_2$. A dense and uniform TaC layer was successfully deposited under conditions of Ta/C = 0.5, $1200^{\circ}C$ and 100 torr. This study verified that the thermodynamic analysis is appropriate as a guide and prerequisite for carbide deposition.
Dental Ni-Ti files must ensure stability and resistance to fatigue fracture. DLC and ta-C were coated to remove defects on the surface and ensure stability, and the surface characteristics were investigated. When coated with DLC, it was black, and in case of ta-C coating, it was blue-black. Scratches, which are defects caused by mechanical processing, were formed on the surface of the un-coated Ni-Ti file from the end of the file along the direction of processing, with the Pro-file appearing in the vertical direction and the K-file appearing in the file direction. Scratches were reduced on the coated surface, and the surface roughness was greatly reduced after coating compared to before coating. The un-coated Ni-Ti file had the lowest hardness, the DLC-coated file had the highest hardness, and ta-C showed relatively high hardness. The elastic modulus of the DLC coating film was high, and the ta-C elastic modulus was low. The adhesion of the DLC coating film tended to be higher than that of ta-C, and the wear loss amount of DLC coating of taC was lower. The corrosion potential of the ta-C coating increased significantly, and the corrosion current density decreased.

Tantalum carbide, which is one of the ultra-high temperature ceramics, was deposited on graphite by low pressure chemical vapor deposition from a $TaCl_5-C_3H_6-Ar-H_2$ mixture. To maintain a constant $TaCl_5/C_3H_6$ ratio during the deposition process, $TaCl_5$ powders were continuously fed into the sublimation chamber using a screw-driven feeder. Sublimation behavior of $TaCl_5$ powder was measured by thermogravimetric analysis. TaC coatings have various phases such as $Ta+{\alpha}-Ta_2C$, ${\alpha}-Ta_2C+TaC_{1-x}$, and $TaC_{1-x}$ depending on the powder feeding methods, the $C_3H_6/TaCl_5$ ratio, and the deposition temperatures. Near-stoichiometric TaC was obtained by optimizing the deposition parameters. Phase compositions were analyzed by XRD, XPS, and Raman analysis.
