  • By employing in-depth interviews with a total of 14 television producers, the study seeks to investigate how the use of documentary background music has changed in the rapidly evolving media technology. This study reveals two major findings. First, the use of traditional compositional background music in TV documentary has been decreased for the last 20 years, while library music with various sound sources has been more likely to be used due to its artistic value, its digitalized formats, and its convenience. Second, the popularity of the library music use has changed the cooperative relationship between TV documentary producers and music directors, and their views on background music. Overall, compared to the past, the new media technology (e.g., much easier, faster editing process and communication through e-mails) has helped to come up with the current trend of using more library music. This trend however implies that the dependency of library music only may lose the unique value of television documentary as a work of creative art and eventually downgrade the quality of the programs. Further practical implications are discussed.

  • This is a study on the subjectivity of audiences about preference of documentaries on TV. Accordingly, Q-methodology was used for this study. As a result, audiences' various characteristics by preference types were able to be found. The individual characteristics were classified into three styles: an entertainment-oriented style pursuing enjoyment, public and society interest-oriented style pursuing public purpose, and culture-oriented style pursuing artistic value of documentaries in order. It could be inferred from the classification of preference styles that unlike the past, the choice of TV broadcasting of audiences was shifting from the passive and media-dependent form to positive form. Therefore, the research and development of content delivery and production in the multi-media and multi-channel digital broadcasting era should be focused on not only the content itself but also an audience-centered service development model reflecting audiences' desire and hope.

In narrative film, it is focused as the story discourse, whereas documentary is strong in disclosure, which consists of narration and interview. In a TV documentary, interviews use conventional shots repeatedly, whereas in a documentary film that targets a relatively large screen, the interviewer's Mise-en-scene should consider the aesthetic depth. , which released in 2017 and used the audience for the third time in documentary film history, tries to make 40% of the volume of the main volume equal to the same angle. In a TV documentary, it is not uncommon for an interview cut to exceed 30 seconds, and if it exceeds 1 minute, immersion is significantly lowered, so the a mount and compression of the interview disclosure is important for both the director and the audience.
