The acaricidal activity of cyenopyrafen on the tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai was evaluated in laboratory and field studies. In the laboratory, cyenopyrafen was highly effective against egg, larva, protonymph and adult female of T. kanzawai. In surviving adult females of T. kanzawai exposed to cyenopyrafen, we observed significant reduction in reproduction and no egg hatch. Effectiveness of cyenopyrafen against adult female of T. kanzawai on bean leaves was lasted for 15 days at treatments of 125 and 83.3 ppm. In a field study, cyenopyrafen exhibited excellent activity to mixed developmental stages of T. kanzawai. Based on the results, cyenopyrafen could be used for the control of T. kanzawai and treatment of this acaricide at 83.3 ppm was recommended as the field rate.
Seasonal occurrence and suitable time of control of Tetranychus kanzawai along with the control efficacy of the alternative use of natural predator and miticide was investigated in Rubus coreanus (Miquel). T. kanzawai appeared in late May with its peak between June and July, and decreased after August in R. coreanus. In Iksan, T. kanzawai estimates show peaks 2~4 times per year during the investigation periods from 2006 to 2008 in R. coreanus fields. Suitable time of control of T. kanzawai was in early to mid May. And control effects of T. kanzawai was improved with an alternated control plot, treating miticides in early-occurrence of T. kanzawai and then releasing the natural predator (Phytoseiulus persimilis Anthias-Henriot). Also, the yields of R. coreanus was highest in the alternated control plot of 638kg/10a compared to non-treatment of 559kg/10a.
Biological control of Tetranychus kanzawai by Phytoseiulus persimilis on the Angelica utilis was done in 'walk-in' plastic tunnels. The population of T. kanzawai nymphs and adults per 4 cm2 in damaged leaf decreased from 25 mites on July 22 after 25 predatory mites per m2 were released on July 23 to 0.4 mites on September 9 and then rose to 9.3 mites on October 16, 1997. Phytoseiulus persimilis could suppress T. kanzawai to low population level from August 13 to October 1.
A Taxonomic investigation was carried out on the following seven spider mites (Family tetranychidae) by comparison of morphological characters, cuticular lobes and karyotypes. Materials used in this study were collected and reared at Jeonju, Jorea during October 1985-June 1986. Subfamily Bryobiinae ; Bryobia praetiosa Koch, 1836 ; Petrobia latens (Mller, 1776). Subfamily Tetranychinae ; Panonychus citri (McGregor , 1919) ; P.ulmi (Koch, 1836): T vienensis tranychus Zacher , 1920 ; T.urticae (Koch, 1836) ; T. kanzawai Kishida , 1927. Of them two species, P. latens and T. kanzawai , are newly recorded from Korea.
The acaricidal activity of extracts of Gleditsia japonica var. koraiensis, Camellia sinensis, Cinnamomum cassia, Lantana camara and their mixtures against the tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai was evaluated. Treatments with mixtures 3 and 1 were effective against the adult females of T. kanzawai and yielded 82.0% and 77.3% adulticidal activities at 7 days after treatment, respectively. Treatment with mixture 2 revealed 68.0% adulticidal activity. Generally, the acaricidal activity of the single treatment of each plant extract was lower than the mixtures. The adult females of T. kanzawai treated with mixtures 3 and 1 produced only 24.0~29.6% as many eggs as control females did. The residue of the plant extracts tested had low adulticidal activity (16.7~31.3% at 7 days after treatment). All the plant extracts tested exhibited no remarkable toxic effect to the eggs of T. kanzawai. Treatments of mixtures 3 and 1 were effective against nymphs of T. kanzawai and led to emergence rates of 16.7 and 22.0%, respectively. These results suggest that mixtures 3 and 1 might be used for the control of T. kanzawai in tea fields.
The comparative toxicity of abamectin to the predatory mite, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha and the spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. kanzawai Kishida was evaluated by leaf disc method. Abamectin was much less toxic to A. womersleyi than to the spider mites. Although survival rate of adult females of A. womersleyi tended to decrease with increasing abamectin concentration, 8-78% of predators remained alive at concentrations of 0.38-6 ppm. Likewise, reproduction was significantly reduced with increasing abamectin concentration. Abamectin neither affect the hatch of A. womersleyi eggs nor the development of surviving immature predators. Survival of immature predators decreased with increasing abamectin concentration. However, 42-90% of immature predators reached adulthood at 0.38-3 ppm. Adult female predators survived on a diet of spider mites intoxicated with abamectin, although their fecundity and the sex-ratio of the progeny were significantly affected. Abamectin at selective sublethal concentrations (0.38-0.75 ppm) could he of value in adjusting predatorlprey ratios in integrated management of T. urticae and T. kanzawai.
These experiments were conducted in the laboratory conditions to determine the prey consumption of a predaciousphytoseiid mite, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha, and its ability to regulate the population of tea redspider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida. The functional response curve of the adult A. womersleyi to thedensity of eggs, larvae, and nymphs of T. kanzawai indicated Holling's Type 11: the consumption of prey bythe adult A. womersleyi increased with the prey density but the consumption rate decreased. The critical initialratio to suppress the prey population by the predator seemed to be 32:l @rey:predator) at 25"C, and 16:l at20$^{\circ}$C on kidney bean plant. The predator could not regulate any initial ratio of the prey population at 15$^{\circ}$C.^{\circ}$C.
Economic injury levels (EILs) and economic control threshold (ET) were estimated for the Tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida(Acari, Tetranychidae) in Rubus coreanus Miquel. T. kanzawai density increased until the early-July and thereafter decreased in all plots except the non-innoculation plot where initial density of the mite were different each 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 adults per plant branch on May 7 in 2008. And the occurrence of the densities were increased higher innoculated density than different innoculation density. The yield was decreased with increasing initial mite density and thereby the rates of yield loss was increased with increasing initial mite density. And T. kanzawai occurrence density, yields and the rates of yield loss, where initial density of the mite were different each 0, 2, 5, 10 and 20 adults per plant branch on May 8 in 2009 were similar tendency to 2008 year results. The relationship between initial T. kanzawai densities and the yield losses was well described by a linear regression, Y = 0.6545X + 3.0425 ($R^2$ = 0.93) in 2008, Y = 0.9031X + 2.0899($R^2$ = 0.96) in 2009. Based on the relationship, the number of adults per plant branch(EILs) which can cause 5% loss of yield was estimated to be approximately 3.0 in 2008 and 3.2 in 2009. And the ET was estimated to be approximately 2.4 in 2008 and 2.6 in 2009. The relationship between initial T. kanzawai densities and occurrence density of mid-May considering the best spray timing against T. kanzawai was well described by a linear regression, Y = 0.471X + 2.495($R^2$ = 0.95) in 2008, Y = 0.9938X + 3.1858($R^2$ = 0.96) in 2009. Based on the relationship, the number of adults per leaf(ET) in mid-May which can cause 5% loss of yield was estimated to be approximately 3.6 in 2008 and 5.8 in 2009.
In this study, 5 species (Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida, Endoclyta excrescens (Butler), leaf roller caterpillar (Adoxophyes orana Fisher), Anomis mesogona (Walker), and Aulacaspis rosae (Bouche)) were found in Rubus coreanus Miquel in Jeonbuk province, from 2006 to 2008. T. kanzawai appeared in mid-May and showed three peaks in late June, mid-July, and late August. Its density was over 10 adults per leaf. A. mesogona appeared in mid-June and showed two peaks in late July, and early October. Of the 28 insect pests in pre-harvesting, the 7 main species were T. kanzawai, T. urticae, A. orana, Lygocoris lucorum Meyer, Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom), Psylliodes punctifrons Baly and Motschulskyia serrata (Matsumura). Of the 19 insect pests in after-harvesting, the 6 main species were T. kanzawai, E. excrescens, A. mesogona, A. orana, P. punctifrons and A. rosae. Growth of R. coreanus decreased when insect pests were not managed and yields decreased approx. 7% a year. Management of insect pests in field using pesticide was not different.
Spider mites and their predacious mites were surveyed in an apple orchard where pesticides have not been applied for a long time, to understand the undisrupted predacious mite complex and their role in the controling spider mites. Spider mites occurring in the orchard were different to those in conventional orchards. A few Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus ulmi were observed, while T. kanzawai was abundant during growing season. Four species of phytoseiids, Amblyseius eharai, A. kokufuensis, A. womersleyi and Typhlodromus vulgaris, and one stigmaeid species of Agistemus terminalis were observed from leaf samples in the orchard. Among them, T. vulgaris occurred from early cool season with low T. kanzawai densities through to mid-and late-season. A. womersleyi was observed only during mid-season when T. kanzawai densities were high with hot weather. Amblyseius eharai and A. kokufuensis occured only in early season, but A. terminalis density increased from mid-season and lasted to late-season. The predacious mite complex regulated the density of T. kanzawai approximately under 8 mites per leaf. Tentatively concluding, T. vulgaris is an adaptable predator at lower prey density under cool weather condition, and A. womersleyi is effective predator at higher prey density under hot weather condition. Further, the biological control strategies of spider mites in Korean orchards were discussed based on the predacious mite complex.
