  • This study was aimed at investigating the relationship of stress perception and psychopathology with biological variables such as systolic and diastolic blood pressure. serum total cholesterol high density lipoprotein and triglyceride in 50 adult patients with essential hypertension and 50 normotensive individuals. Both of the groups were matched to each other regarding age, sex, the level of education and BMI(body mass index). Stress perception and psychopathology between the two groups were compared using GARS and SCL-90-R scales. Biological variables such as blood pressure(systolic. diastolic), serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein and triglyceride were measured in all the subjects. The results were as follows ; 1) Hypertensive patients scored significantly higher than normotensive individuals in stress perception related to unusual happenings, change or no change in routine and overall global area, respectively. 2) Regarding psychopathology, hypertensive patients scored significantly higher than normotensive individuals in depression. hostility and interpersonal sensitivity. respectively. 3) Systolic blood pressure had a significantly positive correlation with scores of stress perception related to sickness and injury, and change or no change in routine, respectively. Diastolic blood pressure had a significantly positive correlation with scores of stress perception related to change or no change in routine. 4) In hypertensive patients. the level of serum total cholesterol had a significantly positive correlation with scores of stress perception related to unusual happenings. However, the level of serum triglyceride had a significantly negative correlation with scores of stress perception related to changes in relationships, sickness or injury, and change or no chang in routine. 5) There were no significant correlations between scores of stress perception and biological factors in the normotensive group. 6) The level of serum triglyceride correlated negatively with phobic anxiety in hypertensive group. whereas it correlated positively with PSDI in normotensive group. In conclusion, these results suggest that hypertensive patients have higher level of stress perception and psychopathology than normal individuals. In hypertensive patients, their stress perception is suggested to be correlated with serum cholesterol.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) and the risk of death from specific causes other than cardiovascular diseases. Methods: We calculated the risk of specific death by SBP and DBP categories for 506 508 health examinees in 2002-2003 using hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in a Cox proportional hazards model. Results: Compared to normal levels (SBP <120 or DBP <90 mmHg), stage I systolic and diastolic hypertension (SBP 140-159, DBP 85-89 mmHg, respectively) were associated with an increased risk of death from diabetes mellitus, alcoholic liver disease, and renal failure (HR, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.51 to 2.22; HR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.46; HR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.64 to 3.21; HR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.27 to 2.20; HR, 1.99; 95% CI, 1.41 to 2.81; HR, 1.31; 95% CI, 0.99 to 1.73, respectively), but a decreased risk of death from intestinal pneumonia (HR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.42 to 0.98; HR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.91). Only stage II systolic hypertension (SBP ${\geq}160mmHg$) was associated with an increased risk of death from pneumonia, liver cirrhosis, and intestinal ischemia (HR, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.19 to 1.98; HR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.00 to 2.15; HR, 3.77; 95% CI, 1.24 to 11.40, respectively), and stage I and II diastolic hypertension (SBP 140-159 and ${\geq}160mmHg$) were associated with an increased risk of death from intestinal ischemia (HR, 3.07; 95% CI, 1.27 to 7.38; HR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.62 to 11.88, respectively). Conclusions: An increase in blood pressure levels may alter the risk of death from certain causes other than cardiovascular diseases, a well-known outcome of hypertension, although the mechanism of these associations is not well documented.

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the number of measurements and visits for blood pressure measurement. We also analyzed the change of blood pressure based on the measurement method and measurement interval. Methods : Data of three clinical trials evaluating the effect of acupuncture, moxibustion, and qigong for pre and mild essential hypertension were used. Blood pressure was measured 3 times each visit with 1 or 5 minutes interval, and it was checked until $3^{rd}$ visit. Two trials used sphygmomanometer and another one trial used automatic device for blood pressure measurement. Results : The mean difference between $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$, and $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ measurement were significant in systolic (p<0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (p<0.001). However, in automated measurement or measuring with 1 minute interval, the difference between $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ was not significant. The mean of $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ measurements was also significantly different from the mean of all three measurements in both systolic (p<0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (p<0.001). While the difference between each visit was not significant in diastolic blood pressure, the systolic blood pressure difference was significant between $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ visit in automated and manual measurement. Conclusion : The mean of two measurements and three measurements were significantly different. The change of blood pressure was different according to the method and interval of blood pressure measurement.

  • The effect of carbohydrates, fat and protein consumption on the blood pressure of adolescents was investigated from the cross sectional data. The two major areas of inquiry were : 1)measuring the variation of blood pressure at various levels of macronutient intake. 2)measuring the relative importance between the factor of nutrient intake and physical growth. A total of 726 students(341 boys and 385 girls) in the first grade of middle school in Kangwha country were studied for their dietary consumption and physical growth as well as blood pressure. Multiple regression analysis was used as the analytical method to identify the relative importance between the factors. Besides the macronutrient consumption, other nutrients such as vitamin and mineral intakes were included in the regression model. The results showed a variation of blood pressure by macronutrient intake level was in consistant both in blood pressure and by gender. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased with increasing protein intake for girls(p<0.05). However, it was not observed in the case of boys. The systolic blood pressure of boys showed a tendency to decrease with fat intake increase, while their diastolic blood pressure showed the opposite trend. Results of the regression analysis showed that physical growth was a more influential factor than nutrition on blood pressure for both sexes. This could imply that the dietary hypertension factors observed in adults may not be operative generally in a population with normotensive blood pressure during growth.

  • The blood pressure measurement is calculated as a value corresponding to the pressure of the blood vessel using the pressure from the outside for a long time. Due to the recent miniaturization of measurement equipment and the ICT combination of personal healthcare systems, a system that enables continuous and real-time measurement of blood pressure with a sensor is required. In this study, blood pressure was measured using pulse transit time using Photoplethysmography. In this study, blood pressure was estimated by using systolic blood pressure. And it is possible to make measurement only with PPG itself, which can contribute to making a micro blood pressure measuring device. As a result, systolic blood pressure and PPG's S1-P and P-S2 were used to analyze the possibility of blood pressure estimation.

  • One aim of this study was to find out the difference of indirect blood pressure between the types of instruments. The difference of indirect blood pressure was measured with mercury sphygomomanometer and electronic blood pressuremeter. Another was to determine the difference of indirect blood pressure according to width of cuff and site of cuff. Indirect blood pressures were measured with the diaphragmatic side of sphygomomanometer. The subjects were 40 female volunteers, whose arm circumferences were from 22 to 34cm. The data were analyzed by SPSS-PC program and pared t-test was used. The results are summarized as follows ; 1. Mercury sphygomomanometer systolic pressure was higher(average 2.20mmhg) than electronic blood pressuremeter. It was statistically significant(p=0.026). 2. The value of Mercury sphygomomanometer diastolic pressure was lower(2.00mmhg) than electronic's. It was statistically significant(p=0.03) 3. In the mercury sphygomomanometer systolic pressure, the value of standard cuff($12{\times}23cm$) was higher(2.40mmhg) than large one's($14{\times}45cm$). It was statistically significant(p=0.007). 4. In diastolic pressure(K4), the value of standard cuff was higher(0.65mmhg) than large cuff's. It was not statistically significant(p=0.481). In K5, the value of standard cuff($12{\times}23cm$) was higher(0.55mmhg) than large cuff's. It was not statistically significant(p=0.541). 5. Difference according to site of showed that the values of systolic pressure over elbow joint were higher(20.00mmhg, 26.45mmhg) than ones at site of elbow joint. It was significant statistically(p=0.000) and clinically. 6. The values of diastolic pressure(K4) over elbow joint were higher(17.10mmhg, 21.60mmhg) than ones at site of elbow joint. It was significant statistically (p=0.000) and clinically. The values of K5 over elbow joint were higher(17.25mmhg, 22.15mmhg) than ones at site of elbow joint. It was significant statistically(p=0.000) and clinically. I think similar studies about indirect blood pressure according to diseases and positions are necessary. In addition, similar studies, are required about accuracy of method electronic blood pressuremeter according to site of mesurement.

  • Blood Pressure is one of the most fundamental Parameters which reflects physical conditions medically and the blood pressure measurement system using oscillometric method is a Non-Invasive Blood Pressure measurement device by measuring arterial Pressure through a cuff. In this paper. we designed a inflatable wrist blood pressure system which measures blood Pressure during the stepping inflation in the wrist cuff. The hardware system consists of a main power unit, a bladder in cuff unit, signal detection units, signal Processing units. a wireless data transmission unit, and a data display unit. We evaluated the reliability of this system by comparing and analyzing systolic. diastolic blood Pressure, and heart rate with other commercial blood Pressure measurement devices. Characteristic ratio values used to determine systolic and diastolic blood Pressure using MAA(Maximum Amplitude Algorithm) were 0.436 and 0.671 respectively.
