  • The major objective of this research is to propose a design architecture for autonomous defense systems for supporting highly intelligent behavior by combining decision, perception, and action components. Systems with such high levels of autonomy are critical for advanced battlefield missions. By integrating a plenty of advanced modeling concepts such as system entity structure, endomorphic modeling, engine-based modeling, and hierarchical encapsulation & abstraction principle, we have proposed four layered design methodology for autonomous defense systems that can support an intelligent behavior under the complicated and unstable warfare. Proposed methodology has been successfully applied to a design of autonomous tank systems capable of supporting the autonomous planning, sensing, control, and diagnosis.

  • This paper is to design stable fuzzy controller so as to control chaotic nonlinear systems effectively via fuzzy control system and Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) design. To design fuzzy control system, nonlinear systems are represented by Takagi-sugeno(TS) fuzzy models. The PDC is employed to design fuzzy controllers from the TS fuzzy models. The stability analysis and control design problems is to find a common Lyapunov function for a set of linear matrix inequalitys(LMIs). The designed fuzzy controller is applied to Rossler system. The simulation results show the effectiveness of our controller.

  • Both combinatorial and parametric optimization are used in computer-aided design(CAD). The most commonly occuring parametric optimization problems in engineering design such as design of control systems, design of electric circuits are usually expressed either as differentiable or as nondifferentiable semi-infinite programming(SIP) problems. In this paper we express algorithms for a class of computer-aided design problems arising in control systems.

  • A known nonlinear compensator design approach is adapted to allow design of nonlinear lead and/or lag compensators, and a number of MATLAB functions are developed that automate the compensator design procedure. With this design tool, control engineers would be able to rapidly design nonlinear lead and/or lag compensators. An example of a tutorial nature is presented.

  • Design sensitivity analysis of a mechanical system is an essential tool for design optimization and trade-off studies. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for the design sensitivity analysis of railway vehicle systems, using the direct differentiation method. The cartesian coordinate is employed as the generalized coordinate. The governing equations of the design sensitivity analysis are formulated as the differential equations. Design sensitivity analysis of railway vehicle systems is performed to show the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • The ASHRAE Design Guide for Tall, Supertall and Megatall Building Systems was produced in collaboration with the CTBUH. The design guide outlines various tall building mechanical systems that are presently being designed or are planned for the future. Tall commercial buildings in particular present a series of design problems that set them apart from other functions. The Design Guide will be of interest to owners, architects, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and other specialized engineers and consultants. This design guide addresses design issues for tall commercial buildings, which are very often mixed-use, and commonly consist of low level retail, office floors, residential units, and hotel uses.

  • An embedded system is a computer system designed to perform one or a few dedicated functions often with real-time computing constraints. A traditional design process of embedded systems is the development of document-centric approach, and it is difficult to develop an embedded system efficiently because communication between teams or steps is not smooth. So the Model Based Design Process are applied to the development of embedded systems. This paper will compare the Model Based Design Process and the traditional design process, and introduce example of development of vehicle device applied the Model Based Design Process.

  • It gradually becomes important to study on how to efficiently integrate and manage plant lifecycle data such as 2D schematic and 3D solid data, logical configuration data, and equipment specifications data. From this point of view, converting plant design data from various systems into neutral data independent from any commercial systems is one of important technologies for the operation and management of plants which usually have a very long period of life. In order to achieve this goal, a neutral model for efficient integration and management of plant data was defined. After schema mapping between one of specification-driven plant design systems and the neutral model was performed, a plant data translator is also implemented according to the mapping result. Finally, by experiments with nuclear power plant design, the feasibility of the translator was demonstrated.

  • Systems engineering has been utilized in system development primarily for large-scale projects or commercial large-scale systems during the last several decades. We can understand why it would be useful to apply systems engineering to the development of a relatively small system. However, it is difficult to effectively carry out a project due to the complexity in applying the methods of systems engineering. To apply systems engineering to the development of a small system, the system engineering processes should be tailored. We established a requirements driven system design process(RDSDP) that can effectively carry out the system design far a small system. RDSDP is a system design process that treats all the requirements thoroughly and effectively. This is applied by the designer according to a standardized and systematized process during the first phase in design, in which system specifications are made. By using RDSDP, we can affect a reduction of the number of redesign phases in the process of the system design, shorten the period for to make specification, which will then cause the system to succeed in the actual application.

  • Different CAD systems are used in ship outfitting design on different usage and purpose. Therefore, data exchanges between CAD systems are required from different formats. For data exchange, boundary representation standard formats such as IGES and ISO 10303 (STEP) are widely used. However, they present only B-rep representation. Because of different CAD systems have their own geometry format, data exchanges with design intend are difficult. Especially, Tribon and PDMS use primitives for express their geometry in ship outfitting design. However, Tribon primitives are represented their parameter by values that are non-parametric. Therefore, data size of catalogue library is bigger than different CAD system using parametric primitive representation. And that system has difficulty on data reprocessing. To solve that problem, we discuss about shape DB which contains design parameters of primitive for exchange Tribon primitives. And geometry data exchange between Tribon and Shape Database that defines based on PDMS scheme are specified using primitive mapping that can represent design intend.
