  • This paper is a study on the reduction of computation time in case of nonlinear magnetic field analysis by finite element method and Newton-Raphson method. For the purpose, the nonlinear convergence equation is computed by the conjugate gradient method which is known to be applicable to symmetric positive definite matrix equations only. As the results, we can not prove mathematically that the system Jacobian is positive definite, but when we applied this method, the diverging case did not occur. And the computation time is reduced by 25-55% and 15-45% in comparison with the case of direct and successive over-relaxation method, respectively. Therefore, we proved the utility of conjugate gradient method.

  • A finite element implementation of the modified compression field theory (MCFT) using a tangential formulation is presented in this work. Previous work reported on implementations of MCFT has concentrated mainly on secant formulations. This work describes details of the implementation of a modular algorithmic structure of a reinforced concrete constitutive model in nonlinear finite element schemes that use a Jacobian matrix in the solution of the nonlinear system of algebraic equations. The implementation was verified and validated using experimental and analytical data reported in the literature. The developed algorithm, which converges accurately and quickly, can be easily implemented in any finite element code.

  • DC distribution system has been evaluated as an excellent one in comparison with existing AC distribution network because it needs fewer power conversion stages and the full capacity of the equipment can be used without consideration for power factor. Recently, research and development on the implementation of DC distribution networks have been progressed globally based on the rapid advancement in power-electronics technology, and the technological developments from the viewpoint of infrastructure are also in progress. However, to configure a distribution network which is a distribution line for DC, more accurate and rapid introduction of analysis technology is needed for the monitoring, control and operation of the system, which ensure the system run flexible and efficiently. However, in case of a bipolar DC distribution network, there are two buses acting as slack buses, so the Jacobian matrix cannot be configured. Without solving this problem, DC distribution network cannot be operated when the network is unbalanced. Therefore, this paper presented a comprehensive method of analysis with consideration of operating elements which are directly connected between neutral electric potential caused by the unbalanced of load in DC distribution network with bipolar structure.

  • A stadium roof that uses the pin-jointed spatial truss system has to be designed by taking into account the unstable phenomenon due to the geometrical non-linearity of the long span. This phenomenon is mainly studied in the single-free-node model (SFN) or double-free-node model (DFN). Unlike the simple SFN model, the more complex DFN model has a higher order of characteristic equations, making analysis of the system's stability complicated. However, various symmetric conditions can allow limited analysis of these problems. Thus, this research looks at the stability of the DFN model which is assumed to be symmetric in shape, and its load and equilibrium state. Its governing system is expressed by nonlinear differential equations to show the double Duffing effect. To investigate the dynamic behavior and characteristics, we normalize the system of the model in terms of space and time. The equilibrium points of the system unloaded or symmetrically loaded are calculated exactly. Furthermore, the stability of these points via the roots of the characteristic equation of a Jacobian matrix are classified.

  • The problem of spacecraft attitude control is solved using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). An ANFIS produces a control signal for one of the three axes of a spacecraft's body frame, so in total three ANFISs are constructed for 3-axis attitude control. The fuzzy inference system of the ANFIS is initialized using a subtractive clustering method. The ANFIS is trained by a hybrid learning algorithm using the data obtained from attitude control simulations using state-dependent Riccati equation controller. The training data set for each axis is composed of state errors for 3 axes (roll, pitch, and yaw) and a control signal for one of the 3 axes. The stability region of the ANFIS controller is estimated numerically based on Lyapunov stability theory using a numerical method to calculate Jacobian matrix. To measure the performance of the ANFIS controller, root mean square error and correlation factor are used as performance indicators. The performance is tested on two ANFIS controllers trained in different conditions. The test results show that the performance indicators are proper in the sense that the ANFIS controller with the larger stability region provides better performance according to the performance indicators.

  • A new algorithm is suggested to solve the optimal reactive power and voltage control (optimal VAR control) problem. The model minimizes the real power losses in the system. The constraints include the reactive power limits of the generators, limits on the bus voltages and the operating limits of control variables-the transformer tap positions generator terminal voltages and switchable reactive power sources. The method presented herein, using a newly developed Jacobian decomposition method, employs linearized sensitivity relationships of power systems to establish both the objective function for minimizing the system losses and the system performance sensitivities relating dependent and control variables. The algorithm consists of two modules, i.e. the Q-V module for reactive power-voltage control, and load flow module for computational error adjustments. In particular the acceleration factor technique is introduced to enhance the convergence property in Q-V module. The combined use of the afore-mentioned two modules ensures more effective and efficient solutions for optimal reactive power dispatch problems. Results of the application of the method to a sample system and other worst-case systems demonstrated that the algorithm suggested herein is compared favourably with conventional ones in terms of computation accuracy and convergence characteristics.

  • In recent years, electric power systems have been experiencing a rapid change due to the increasing electricity market. For the effective use of power system under the deregulated environment, it is important to make a fast and accurate calculation of the maximum available transfer capability (ATC) from a supply point to a demand point. In this paper, the purpose of this research is to calculate ATC fast and accurately for securing the stability of system and raising the efficiency as a result of anticipating transmission congestion according to transmission open access progressed in the future under the regulated environment of electricity market. In this paper, a study utilized a relation of the potential energy and energy function by which calculated CCT and then utilized a relation of PEBS for transient stability ATC calculation. In this paper, ATC was calculated as RPF and Energy Function method and calculation results of each method was compared. Contingence ranking method decided the weak bus by the Eigenvalues of Jacobian matrix and overloading branches by PI-index. As a result, a study proved the fast and accurate ATC calculation method considering transient stability suggested in this paper. Through the case study using New England 39 bus system, it is confirmed that the proposed method can be used for real time operation and the planning of electric market.

  • Orbit determination problems have been interest of many researchers for long time. Due to the high nonlinearity of the equation of motion and the measurement model, it is necessary to linearize the both equations. To avoid linearization, the filter based on Fokker-Planck equation is designed. with the extended Kalman filter update mechanism, in which the associated Fokker-Planck equation was solved efficiently and accurately via discrete quadrature and the measurement update was done through the extended Kalman filter update mechanism. This filter based on the DQMOM and the EKF update is applied to the orbit determination problem with appropriate modification to mitigate the filter smugness. Unlike the extended Kalman filter, the hybrid filter based on the DQMOM and the EKF update does not require the burdensome evaluation of the Jacobian matrix and Gaussian assumption for the system, and can still provide more accurate estimations of the state than those of the extended Kalman filter especially when measurements are sparse. Simulation results indicate that the advantages of the hybrid filter based on the DQMOM and the EKF update make it a promising alternative to the extended Kalman filter for orbit estimation problems.

  • Several voltage instability/collapse problems that have occurred in the electric utility industry worldwide have gained the attention of engineers and researchers of electric power systems. This paper proposes an effective calculation scheme of the extreme loading point and nose curves(P-V curves) using modified Newton-Raphson(N-R) load flow method and the Continuation Method. This method provides detail and visual information of the power system voltage profile and operating margin ro operators and planners. In this paper, a modified load flow claculation method for ill-conditioned power systems is introduced for the purpose of seeking more precise load flow solutions and nose curves, and the Continuation Method is also used as a part of the solution algorithm for the calculation of extreme loading point and nose curves. The conventional polar coordinate based N-R load flow program is modified to avoid numerical difficulties caused by the singularity of the Jacobian matrix occuring in the vicinity of extreme loading point of heavily loaded systems. Application results of the proposed method to Klos-Kerner 11-bus system and modified IEE-30-bus system are presented to assure the usefulness of the approach.

  • This paper proposes a deformation method for solving practical nonlinear programming problems. Utilizing the nonlinear parametric programming technique with Quasi-Newton method [6,7], the method solves the problem by imbedding it into a suitable one-parameter family of problems. The approach discussed in this paper was originally developed with the aim of solving a system of structural optimization problems with frequently appears in various kind of engineering design. It is assumed that we have to solve more than one structural problem of the same type. It an optimal solution of one of these problems is available, then the optimal solutions of thel other problems can be easily obtained by using this known problem and its optimal solution as the initial problem of our parametric method. The method of nonlinear programming does not generally converge to the optimal solution from an arbitrary starting point if the initial estimate is not sufficiently close to the solution. On the other hand, the deformation method described in this paper is advantageous in that it is likely to obtain the optimal solution every if the initial point is not necessarily in a small neighborhood of the solution. the Jacobian matrix of the iteration formula has the special structural features [2, 3]. Sectioon 2 describes nonlinear parametric programming problem imbeded into a one-parameter family of problems. In Section 3 the iteration formulas for one-parameter are developed. Section 4 discusses parametric approach for Quasi-Newton method and gives algorithm for finding the optimal solution.
