This paper presents a technique for electromagnetic field analysis on surge response due to Mid-span back-flashovers effects in lightning protection system of 500 kV EHV single circuit transmission tower by the neural networks method. These analyses are based on modeling lightning return stroke as well as on coupling the electromagnetic fields of the stroke channel to the line. The ground conductivity influences both the electric field as well as the coupling mechanism and hence the magnitude and wave shape of the induced voltage. The technique can be used to analyzed the corona voltage effect, the effective of stroke to the span tower, the surge impedance of transmission lines. The maximum voltage from flashovers effects in the lines. The model is compatible with general electromagnetic transients programs such as the ATP-EMTP. The simulation results show that this study analyses for time-domain with those produced by a cascade multi-section model, the surge impedance of a full-sized tower hit directly by a lightning stroke is discussed.

A storm surge barrier is a specific type of floodgate, designed to prevent a storm surge or spring tide from flooding the protected area behind the barrier. A surge barrier is almost always part of a larger flood protection system consisting of floodwalls, dikes, and other constructions. Surge barriers allow water to pass under normal circumstances but, when a (storm) surge is expected, the barrier can be closed. Among the various means of closing, buoyant flap typed storm surge barrier which was indicated by MOSE project in Italy is chosen for Masan bay protection, and the motion of the surge barrier under the action of storm surge and wave is examined using FLOW-3D, a computational fluid dynamics software analyzing various physical flow processes. Numerical result shows that storm surge barrier is successfully operated under wave height 3 m, and tidal range 2 m.

Metal oxide varistors (MOVs) protect circuits and devices from transient overvoltages in electric power systems. However, a MOV continuously deteriorates owing to manufacturing defects or repetitive protective operations from transient overvoltages. A deteriorated MOV may result in a short circuit or a line-ground accident. Previous studies focused on the analysis of deterioration mechanisms and condition diagnosis techniques for MOVs owing to their recent growth of use. An accelerated deterioration experiment under the same conditions in which a MOV operates is essential. In this study, we designed and fabricated a surge generator that can apply a surge current to a MOV connected to AC mains. The coupling network operates at a low impedance against the surge current from the surge generator and transfers the surge current to the MOV under test. It also acts as a high impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage not to be applied to the surge generator. The decoupling network operates at a high impedance against the surge current and blocks the surge current from AC mains. It also acts as a low impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage to be applied to the MOV under test. The prototype surge generator can apply the 8/20 us up to 15 kA on AC voltages in the approximate range of 110~450 V, and it fully operates on a LabVIEW-based program.

This paper deals with the analysis results of surge voltage and current measured on information devices installed in a power substation. The power recorder to measure surge voltage and current was connected to signal lines near power transformers and switches, and the time resolution of the power recorder is 4 MS/s. Peak value of the measured surge voltage and current were ranges of 500~1,300v and 500~3,100k, respectively. During the period of measurement, over 5~10 events per day were recorded. Consequently, information devices installed in around high voltage power facilities should be designed considering the surge voltage and current caused in the condition.

Photovoltaic(PV) array, which is generally installed outside, has the possibility to be damaged by high voltage due to lightning. Because the surge characteristics of PV array have not b eon fully Identified yet, there is a very important issue whether PV array should be connected with ground or not. In this paper, a basic model of PV array is provided considering the PV cell's barrier capacitance and ground capacitance for analysis of surge characteristics.

This paper presents the voltage characteristics of the various faults after lightning surge hits the overhead grounding wire close to the transformer's secondary side. Based on the modeled distribution system, the cases of the various faults occurred by lightning surge are simulated using EMTP/ATPDraw and maximum overvoltage and RMS voltage according to the distances from the transformer are investigated. As a result, it is seen that the voltage characteristics of faults caused by lightning surge is different depending on the fault type and the voltage characteristics can be used to detect the fault type caused by lightning surge.
As the effect of global warming continues, surge rates in Korea are also getting increased. Although there are devices to protect distribution line from the surge like lightning arrester, insulation of the lightning arrester can be destroyed if frequent surge occurs in distribution line. This paper assumed that the lightning surge hits the lightning arrester and make this device's insulation destroyed. This paper also simulated these processes utilizing EMTP/ATPDraw and verified voltage behavior when faults such as line to ground fault due to frequent lightning surge occur in lightning arrester.

The paper presents preliminary investigation results for the effect of the baseline correction in the acceleration excitation method on finite element seismic analysis results (such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain considering cyclic plasticity, von Mises effective stress, etc) of nuclear safety Class I components. For investigation, finite element elastic-plastic time-history seismic analysis is performed for a surge line including a pressurizer lower head, a pressurizer surge nozzle, a surge piping, and a hot leg surge nozzle using the Chaboche hardening model. Analysis is performed for various seismic loading methods such as acceleration excitation methods with and without the baseline correction, and a displacement excitation method. Comparing finite element analysis results, the effect of the baseline correction is investigated. As a result of the investigation, it is identified that finite element analysis results using the three methods do not show significant difference.

Characteristics of nearshore surge intensity were investigated by analyzing the tide data at 20 tidal stations. Statistical analysis of the surge data show that surge heights at the western coast are far greater than those at southern and eastern coasts, implying that each coast has its own classified characteristics. Surge height data greater than 30 cm were chosen and their intensities were calculated, and then, typhoon-induced surges were separated. The results show that while surge intensity at the western coast is conspicuous in winter due to the monsoon, it is conspicuous in summer due to the typhoon at other coasts. EOF analysis show that the 1st eigenvector at the western coast is prominent, which is considered to be consistent with above mentioned results.

The solenoid valve in ABS hydraulic modulator is a two directional on-off valve and is controlled by around 100Hz high speed pulse width modulation. When the valve is switched from open state to closed state, noise and vibration due to pressure surge phenomena in the hydraulic line and wheel cylinder are made. In this study, we identify Pressure surge phenomenon in the braking process of a ABS, and investigate the way to reduce the phenomenon. For the purpose of theoretical analysis on the pressure surge in the closed state hydraulic line, characteristic curve method based on wave equation was utilized. To reduce the surge, high frequency control of 20kHz was attempted. The result showed that the surge pressure of 50% was reduced compared to one observed in the low frequency control. Duty variation of high frequency can control current of solenoid valve and prevent sudden change of displacement.
