  • Thin $ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ films were deposited on a tool steel substrate using Zr and Al cathodes in a cathodic arc plasma deposition system (CAPD), and then oxidized at $600-900^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 50 h. They effectively suppressed the oxidation of the substrate up to $800^{\circ}C$ by acting as a barrier layer against the outward diffusion of the substrate elements and inward diffusion of oxygen. However, rapid oxidation occurred at $900^{\circ}C$ due mainly to the increased diffusion and subsequent oxidation of steel as well as the crystallization of amorphous $Al_2O__3$.

  • In this study, the diffusion barrier properties of $1000\AA$ thick molybdenum compounds (Mox=1-5 Si) were investigated using sheet resistance measurements, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and Rutherford back scattering spectrometry (RBS). Each barrier material was deposited by the de and rf magnetron co-sputtering of Mo and Si, respectively, and annealed at $500-700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in vacuum. Each barrier material was failed at low temperatures due to Cu diffusion through grain boundaries and defects of barrier thin films or through the reaction of Cu with Si within Mo-barrier thin films. It was found that Mo rich thin films were less effective than Si rich films to Cu penetration activating Cu reaction with the substrate at a temperature higher than $500^{\circ}C$.

  • Chloride ions have a tendency to penetrate into concrete and proceed the corrosion by depassivating rebar surface. Thus the deteriorated concrete is subject to experience severe degrading of durability under marine environment. Physical properties of mortar, such as, compressive strength and penetration depth of chloride ion were investigated. And to investigate the effect of containing SG, FA in mortar, the diffusion coefficient of chloride was measured through an electro - migration test. The diffusion coefficient of chloride was decreased with the increase of replacement ratio of SG compared with plain specimen.

  • Effect of diffusion induced recrystallization(DIR) on mechanical properties of hot-pressed TiC was in-vestigated. The TiC specimen was electroplated with Cr and then heat-treated at 1550. Through the DIR process a new set of (Ti, Cr) C mixed carbide grains with uniform and small size was formed at the surface. As a consequence the scattering in fracture strength decreased and the toughness increased.

  • Carbon nitride thin films were deposited by reactive sputtering for the hard coating materials on Si wafer and tool steels. When the nitrogen content of carbon nitride film on tool steel is 33.4%, the mean hardness and elastic modulus are 49.34 GPa and 307.2 GPa respectively. The nitrided or carburised surface acts as the diffusion barrier which shows better adhesion of carbon nitride thin film on the steel surface. To prevent nitrogen diffusion from the film, steel substrate can be saturated by nitrogen forming a Fe$_3$N layer. The desirable structure at the surface after carburising is martensite, but sometimes, due to high carbon content an proeutectoid Fe$_3$C structure may form at the grain boundaries, leaving the overall surface brittle and may cause defects.

  • We present an explicit numerical algorithm for surface reconstruction from unorganized points using the Gaussian filter. We construct a surface from unorganized points and solve the modified heat equation coupled with a fidelity term which keeps the given points. We apply the operator splitting method. First, instead of solving the diffusion term, we use the Gaussian filter which has the effect of diffusion. Next, we solve the fidelity term by using the fully implicit scheme. To investigate the proposed algorithm, we perform computational experiments and observe good results.
