  • A flow problem around a ship hull with the nonlinear free surface boundary condition has been considered within the potential flow assumption. The Green's function based on the hull boundary condition is constructed numerically and used to satisfy the free surface boundary condition. This singularity to be distributed ideally on the undulating free surface is put actually, for practical reasons, on the flat water surface with the assumption of linear variation of velocities between the two positions. The surfaces of singularity distribution are approximated by Hess and Smith type quadrilaterals. The radiation condition is only crudely satisfied and this produced one of the major difficulties arising in the present way of attacking the problem.

  • Purpose: The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of erbium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation on the change of hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated implant surface microstructure according to the laser energy and the application time. Methods: The implant surface was irradiated by Er:YAG laser under combination condition using the laser energy of 100 mJ/pulse, 140 mJ/pulse and 180 mJ/pulse and application time of 1 minute, 1.5 minutes and 2 minutes. The specimens were examined by surface roughness evaluation and scanning electron microscopic observation. Results: In scanning electron microscope, HA-coated implant surface was not altered by Er:YAG laser irradiation under experimental condition on 100 mJ/pulse, 1 minute. Local areas with surface melting and cracks were founded on 100 mJ/pulse, 1.5 minutes and 2 minutes. One hundred forty mJ/pulse and 180 mJ/pulse group had surface melting and peeling area of HA particles, which condition was more severe depending on the increase of application time. Under all experimental condition, the difference of surface roughness value on implant surface was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Er:YAG laser on HA-coated implant surface is recommended to be irradiated below 100 mJ/pulse, 1 minute for detoxification of implant surface without surface alteration.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic pressure model for free surface flows using a normalized vertical coordinate system is presented. To strongly couple the free surface and non-hydrostatic pressure in the momentum equations, a double predictor-corrector method is employed. This research is especially focused on implementing the dynamic boundary condition (a zero pressure condition) at the free surface. This boundary condition can be specified accurately with a small modification to existing models. Numerical results with and without this modification clearly show that a precise implementation of the dynamic boundary condition is paramountly important.

  • 5-axis NC machining has a good advantage of the accessibility of tool motion by adding two rotary axes. It offers numerous advantages such as expanding machining fields in parts of turbo machineries like impeller, propeller, turbine blade and rotor, reasonable tool employment and great reduction of the set-up process. However, as adding two rotary axes, it is difficult to choose suitable machining conditions in terms of tool path, tool posture, feedrate control at a tool tip and post-processing. Therefore in this paper, it is proposed to decide suitable machining condition through an experimental method such as adopting various tool paths, tool postures, and feedrate types. Machining experiment on AL7075 for impeller is performed to define suitable machining condition, and measurement of surface roughness on machined surfaces depended on each machining condition is performed. By defining suitable machining condition, we should have conclusion as improving the surface quality in the aspect of surface roughness and machined shape of surface.

  • Soil moisture is affected by regional climate, soil characteristics and land surface condition, etc,. Especially, the changes in land surface condition is more than other factors, which is mainly due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. This study is to evaluate how the change of land surface condition impacts on soil moisture field evolution using a simple model of soil moisture dynamics. For the quantification of soil moisture field, the first half of the paper is spared for the statistical characterization based on the first- and second-order statistics of Washita '92 and Monsoon '90 data. The second half is for evaluating the impact of land cover changes through simulation study using a model for soil moisture dynamics. The model parameters, the loss rate and the diffusion coefficient, have been estimated using the observed data statistics, where the changes of surface conditions are considered into the model by applying various parameter sets with different second-order statistics. This study is concentrated on evaluating the impact due to the changes of land surface condition variability. It is because we could easily quantify the impact of the changes of its areal mean based on the linear reservoir concept. As a result of the study, we found; (1)as the variability of land surface condition, increases, the soil moisture field dries up more easily, (2)as the variabilit y of the soil moisture field is the highest at the beginning of rainfall and decreases as time goes on to show the variability of land surface condition, (3)the diffusion effect due to surface runoff or water flow through the top soil layer is limited to a period of surface runoff and its overall impact is small compared to that of the loss rate field.

  • In this study the change of free surface vortex is expressed through the time volume fraction using multiphase unsteady condition in sump, because in previous studies of the pump sump did not represent the behavior of the free surface vortex exactly due to the reason it was calculated using single phase and steady condition. The reliability of the computational analysis is verified through comparing experimental results with that of present numerical analysis. Homogeneous free surface model is used to apply interactions of air and water. The results show that the free surface vortex can be identified on the isotropic surface at air volume fraction 1%~5%. The vortices make an air column from the free surface to the sump intake and are created and destroyed repeatedly. The behavior of free surface vortex at numerical analysis is quite similar to experimental test. The result of vortex motion according to time, works on a cycle.

  • In this study, a diamond turning machine and a laser-assisted machining module were utilized for the complex combined cutting of aspheric shapes and fine patterns on the surface of high-hardness brittle material, silicon. The analysis of material's form accuracy and corrective machining was conducted based on key factors such as laser output, rotational speed, feed rate, and cutting depth to achieve form accuracy below 1 ㎛ and surface roughness below 0.1 ㎛. The cutting condition and corrective machining methods were investigated to achieve the desired form accuracy and surface roughness. The rotational speed of the spindle and the linear feed rate of the diamond turning machine were varied in five stages for the cutting condition test. Surface roughness and form accuracy were measured using both a contact surface profilometer and a non-contact surface profilometer. The experimental results revealed a tendency of improved surface roughness with increased rotational speed of the workpiece, and the best surface roughness and form accuracy were observed at a feed rate of 5 mm/min. Furthermore, based on the cutting condition experiments, corrective machining was performed. The experimental results demonstrated an improvement in form accuracy from 0.94 ㎛ to 0.31 ㎛ and a significant reduction in the average value of the surface roughness curve from 0.234 ㎛ to 0.061 ㎛. This research serves as a foundation for future studies focusing on the machinability in relation to laser output parameters.

  • Working condition is one of the most important factors in precision working. In this study, we optimized the vibration acceleration level(VAL) of Al 2024 alloy to select optimum working condition of side wall end-milling using RSM(Response Surface Methodology). RSM was well adapted to make analytic model for minimizing vibration acceleration, created the objective function and saved a great deal of computational time. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed optimization procedure using RSM can be easily utilized to solve the optimization problem of working condition. The experimental results of the surface roughness and VAL showed the validity of the proposed working condition of side wall end-milling as it can be observed.

  • We propose a sliding surface design method for linear systems with mismatched uncertainties in the state space model. In terms of LMIs, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a linear sliding surface such that the reduced-order equivalent sliding mode dynamics restricted to the linear sliding surface is not only stable but completely invariant to mismatched uncertainties. We give an explicit formula of all such linear switching surfaces in terms of solution matrices to the LMI existence condition. We also give a switching feedback control law, together with a design algorithm. Additionally, we give some hints for designing linear switching surfaces guaranteeing pole clustering constraints or linear quadratic performance bound constraints. Finally, we give a design example in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
