Modification of DC Flashover Voltage at High Altitude on the Basis of Molecular Gas Dynamics

  • The effect of altitude on thermal conduction, surface temperature, and thermal radiation of partial arc was investigated on the basis of molecular gas dynamics to facilitate a deep understanding of the pollution surface discharge mechanism. The DC flashover model was consequently modified at high altitude. The validity of the modified DC flashover model proposed in this paper was proven through a comparison with the results of high-altitude simulation experiments and earlier models. Moreover, the modified model was found to be better than the earlier modified models in terms of forecasting the flashover voltage. Findings indicated that both the thermal conduction coefficient and the surface thermodynamics temperature of partial arc had a linear decrease tendency with the altitude increasing from 0 m to 3000 m, both of which dropped by approximately 30% and 3.6%, respectively. Meanwhile, the heat conduction and the heat radiation of partial arc both had a similar linear decrease of approximately 15%. The maximum error of DC pollution flashover voltage between the calculation value according to the modified model and the experimental value was within 6.6%, and the pollution flashover voltage exhibited a parabola downtrend with increasing of pollution.

  • 새로운 형태의 고체 상태의 대전력, 고속전자장치인 광전도 전력스위치(PCPS)의 개발과 대전력 및 고전압 상태하에서 광전도 전력스위치의 고전계 동작특성을 규명하기 위해서 많은 연구가 행해지고 있다. 그러나 표면 섬락 현상이 확실하고 효과 있는 고속, 고압스위칭 소자의 실현을 방해하고 있다. 이러한 연면방전의 물리적 현상의 명백한 이해는 새로운 기술과 소자구성을 발전시키는데 매우 중요할 뿐 아니라, 고전계·고전압에서의 동작특성을 향상시키는데 있어서도 특별한 의미를 가진다. 뿐만 아니라 고전계, 고전력 소자들을 안전하게 동작할 수 있게 하기 위해서도 필요하다. 연면방전 및 표면 절연파괴현상은 반도체 벌크 파괴 전계보다 훨씬 낮은 전계에서 적용되어 파괴된 모든 소자들에서 발생하기 때문에 이러한 문제를 해결하는 매우 실용적인 방법이 소자의 표면을 절연물로 페시베이션하는 것이다. 페시베이션된 소자들은 고전계에서 언페시페이션된 소자에 비해 매우 좋은 동작특성을 나타내므로, 본 논문에서는 페시베이션된 소자와 언페시베이션된 소자간의 I-E특성과 파괴 메커니즘을 규명하고 더 나아가 다중 페시베이션에 대한 몇몇 특성 값을 제시한다.

  • Fiberglass - reinforced plastic (FRP) can have high breakdown puncture strength and has high mechanical strength. So the research of its dielectric properties have been conducted in liquid nitrogen(L$N_{2}$). In this study, we discussed the characteristics of surface flashover on FRP in L$N_{2}$ for applying it to spacer of a superconducting power equipment. We distinguished four types of surface flashover along solid insulator with arrangement of electrodes and tested the surface flashover voltage of each types of electrode arrangement. The type of a electrode set at the back of the insulator showed the worst dielectric property.

  • This study was investigated for searching a cause of flashover failure of polymer insulator and preparing countermeasures. Hydrophobicity, microstructure and chemical structural change of polymer weathershed were studied by polymer characterization methods. In addition, the electrical properties such as power frequency dry flashover voltage/impulse voltage tests, contamination characteristics were carried out. The hydrophobicity of polymer weathershed was decreased significantly and cracks were observed on the surface. Also, the electrical characteristics did not satisfy the KEPCO specification. The failed polymer insulators showed the more leakage current than 4 years service-aged ones. From the result, it can be concluded that the flashover failure of polymer insulator was attributed to the surface aging and severe contamination.

  • For the experiment the four types of spacer were distinguished by arrangement. The flashover characteristic on each types of spacer was investigated and the flashover phenomena were observed to understand breakdown mechanism in liquid nitrogen($LN_{2}$). The spacer should be placed interior coil as an insulator, a cooling channel and s supporter of structures. The simulated electrode used in the experiment was made from five turns of HTS tape. Experimental results revealed that multi-layer and barrier effects did work well in Air but did not in $LN_{2}$. These result suggested that the flashover in LN2 caused by the bubbles due to partial discharge at micro gap, g. The flashover characteristics decreased to 70% when g is 0.2 mm. The degradation was improved by even treatment on surface of coil electrode.

연면방전에 미치는 도전층의 영향 및 그 애자, 투관에의 응용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effects of Metallic Barriers on Surface Discharge and It's Application to Insulators and Bushings)

  • According to the previous studies which was done by the author, the flashover voltage was found to be increased considerably if some metallic barriere are inserted into the flashover discharge path. This paper shows that the flashover voltage in suspension insulators and bushings is raised up by the application of metallic barrier effect on surface discharge. Using moderate metallic barrier configulation the flash over voltage can be raised up by the amount of about 15% compared to that of the convensional type of suspension insulatiors and bushings.

  • The paper deals with the surface discharge characteristics for porcelain suspension insulators. The micro-crystals were crystallized on the surface of glace coated on the porcelain These micro-crystals may affect the electrical Properties such as flashover voltage. However. not much research have been conducted. In this study. we correlated the surface discharge characteristics to the microstructures. It was confirmed that the micro-crystals on the glaze initiated the flashover when the surface was wetted and/or contaminated.

  • The time to tracking breakdown of treated filled specimen is longer than untreated filled specimen. And, after the RWDT, the surface of specimen by adding untreated filler appeared heavy erosion. It was found that the addition to surface treated filler. the better tracking resistance. In the RWDT, the breakdown specimen is not affected by the dry flashover voltage. despite the fact that the surface degradation of tracking test has different state on each specimen. This suggests that wet flashover voltage play an important role in evaluating of tracking and erosion on the surface degradation in tracking test. And, the flashover voltage of specimen under wet conditions are greatly affected by the salt concentration and degree of degradation by the RWDT. Because of hydrophobicity and degree of degradation by the RWDT, the flashover voltage of treated filled specimen is higher than that of untreated filled specimen. Different types of specimen may have different hydrophobicity and their surface state under contaminated conditions may not be the same. It is assumed that this phenomenon is related to the decrease in hydrophobicity of the surface of the materials.

  • This paper shows experimentally the characteristics of raising up the flashover voltage in supension insulators or bushing according to the theoretical results which was gotten by previous study. It was shown theoretically that, if some conducting metallic barriers are inserted into the flashover discharge path, the flashover voltage is found to be increased considerably. In order to verify this theoretical results, some basic experimental study was done, and the results was found to be more or less satisfactory except some problems which must be considered in future study.

  • This paper presents the surface flashover characteristics to simulate the poor contact between an anode and a solid dielectric in a $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas (8/2) under a non-uniform field. The surface flashover voltage of the $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas revealed the irregular tendency that was not in accordance with the Paschen's law with an increasing gap of the poor contact. In addition, the insulation performance of the $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas at 0.6MPa was comparable to that of $SF_6$ gas of 0.1MPa based on the insulation performance on the poor contact. These results are able to apply the insulation design of eco-friendly gas insulation switchgear considering the internal faults.
