  • A location estimation algorithm based on the sea-surface beacon is proposed in this paper. The beacon is utilized to provide ultrasonic signals to the underwater vehicles around the beacon to estimate precise position of underwater vehicles (ROV, AUV, Diver robot), which is named as USBL (Ultra Short Baseline) system. It utilizes GPS and INS data for estimating its position and adopts DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) de-noising filter and UKF (Unscented KALMAN Filter) elaborating the position estimation. The beacon system aims at estimating the precise position of underwater vehicle by using USBL to receive the tracking signals. The most important one for the precise position estimation of underwater vehicle is estimating the position of the beacon system precisely. Since the beacon is on the sea-waves, the received GPS signals are noisy and unstable most of times. Therefore, the INS data (gyroscope sensor, accelerometer, magnetic compass) are obtained at the beacon on the sea-surface to compensate for the inaccuracy of the GPS data. The noises in the acceleration data from INS data are reduced by using DWT de-noising filter in this research. Finally the UKF localization system is proposed in this paper and the system performance is verified by real experiments.

  • Metallic nanostructures have great potential for bio-chemical sensor applications due to the excitation of localized surface plasmon and its sensitive response to environmental change. Unlike the commonly explored absorption-based sensing, the optical scattering provides single particle detection scheme. For the localized surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, the metallic nanostructures with controlled shape and size have been usually fabricated on adhesion-layer pre-coated transparent glass substrates. In this study, we calculated the optical scattering properties of plasmonic Au nanodisc using a discrete dipole approximation method and analyzed the effect of adhesion layer on them. Our result also indicates that there is a trade-off between the surface plasmon damping and the capability of supporting nanostructures in determining the optimal thickness of adhesion layer. Marginal thickness of Ti adhesion layer for supporting Au nanostructures fabricated on a silica glass substrate was experimentally analyzed by an adhesion strength test using a nano-indentation technique.

  • A numerical investigation on the conduction-natural convection-surface radiation conjugate heat transfer in the enclosure having substrate and chips has been performed. A 2-dimensional simulation model is developed by considering heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation. The solutions to the equation of radiative transfer are obtained by the discrete ordinates method using S-4 quadrature. The effects of Rayleigh number and the substrate-fluid thermal conductivity ratio on the cooling of chip are analyzed. The result shows that radiation is the dominant heat transfer mode in the enclosure.

  • During CVD process of semiconductor wafer fabrication, maintaining the uniformity of temperature distribution at wafer top surface is one of the key factors affecting the quality of final products. Effect of contact conductance between wafer and hot plate on predicted temperature of wafer was investigated. The validity of opaque wafer assumption was also examined by comparing the predicted results with Discrete Ordinate solutions accounting for semitransparent radiative characteristics of silicon. As the contact conductance increases predicted wafer temperature increases and the differences between maximum and minimum temperatures within wafer and between wafer and hot plate top surface temperatures decrease. The opaque assumption always overpredicted the wafer temperature compared to semitransparent calculation. The influences of surrounding reactor inner wall temperature and hot plate configuration are then discussed.

  • In the high lift devices specifications for surface smoothness requirements, as manufacturing tolerances, arise out of aerodynamic consideration to minimize drag. True optimization of tolerances is a multi-disciplinary problem involving fluid mechanics, device performance, manufacturing philosophy and life cycle costing. One of the reasons for degradation of wetted surface is discrete roughness as a consequence of manufacturing defects, collectively termed as one of the excrescences effect. Usually, excrescence drag arising out of discrete roughness is of considerable lower order of magnitude as compared to the total drag of the flight bodies. Nor was there adequate predicting tool to account for the extent of drag degradation. Estimation of excrescence drag remained as a state-of-the art based on experimental results.

  • A new concept of multi-point dieless elasto-forming method has been developed to make various shape of curved surface without conventional dies. The developed dieless elasto-forming system consists of discrete punches controlled by servo motors and various kinds of elastomers(rubber and foam). To predict optimal position of punch elements, DTF(deformation transfer function) was introduced, and FEM analysis was carried out. The optimal arrangement of elastomer was selected considering characteristics of each elastomer, and a desired concave shape was formed. The experimental results were consistent with the numerical ones.

  • In this paper, a novel sliding surface is proposed by defining a novel virtual state. This sliding surface has nominal dynamics of an original system and makes it possible that the Discrete-Time Sliding Mode Control(DSMC) technique is used with the various types of controllers. Its design Is based on the augmented system whose dynamics have a higher order than that of the original system. The reaching phase is removed by using an initial virtual state which makes the initial sliding function equal to zero.

  • The interaction of laminar mixed convection and surface radiation in a two-dimensional channel with an array of rectangular blocks is analyzed numerically. Three blocks are maintained at high temperature and the other bottom and top horizontal walls are insulated. Discrete ordinate method(DOM) is introduced to analyze the radiative heat transfer. The effects of the variations of Reynolds number and channel specifications on the heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are correlated and presented in terms of Reynolds number and dimensionless geometric parameters such as the block spacing, height and channel spacing. For the conditions considered in this study, average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are strongly influenced by the channel spacing and Reynolds number but weakly influenced by the block spacing and block height.

  • Explicit Kutta condition approximation, proved useful in existing time-domain solver of the unsteady propeller problem, requires a specified functional behavior of the vorticity in space near the trailing edge. In this paper, the strength of the discrete vortices is controlled to have a specified behavior in space in the frequency domain approach. A new formulation is introduced and is implemented for analysis of a lifting surface of a rectangular planform. Sample computations carried out according to the new formulation compares well with that of existing unsteady lifting problem in the time domain.

  • In this paper, we have proposed discrete ray tracing method (DRTM) for numerical analysis of characteristics of electromagnetic propagation along 2D random rough surfaces. The point of the present method is to discretize not only rough surface but also ray tracing. The former helps saving computer memories and the latter does simplifying ray searching algorithm resulting in saving computation time. Numerical calculations are carried out for 2D random rough surfaces, and electric field distributions are shown to check the effectiveness of the proposed DRTM.
