Objectives: We examined which socioeconomic and intergenerational characteristics were associated with the level of intention to marry among Korean men and women in young adulthood. Method: Data came from 351 men and 391 women who were 25-34 years old, had never been married, and had at least one living parent. We conducted multiple regression analyses by gender after controlling for age and current romantic relationship. Results: Among the socioeconomic characteristics, more years of education was linked to both men's and women's higher levels of intention to marry. For women, having a secure, full-time job was related to greater intention to marry. For men, the higher their subjective socioeconomic status, the greater their intention to marry. Among intergenerational characteristics, both men's and women's positive attitudes toward supporting elderly parents were related to a higher level of intention to marry. For men, the frequency of providing instrumental support for their parents was negatively associated with the men's intention to marry. For women, higher levels of agreement with parents' responsibility to support their adult children as well as greater affection for their parents were positively related to greater intention to marry. Conclusions: The findings suggest that young adults' socioeconomic resources and the family context are important predictors of young adults' marital intentions. The results also reveal gender differences in the factors associated with young adults' marital intentions.
This study examines the structure of intergenerational relationship and its effects on old-age security of the Korean society. Of interest is the effects of the middle aged's attitudes on old parents'security on their intergenerational exchange relationship and on their own old-age security as well. This study also attempts to test the applicability of the social exchange perspective to the study of intergenerational support relationship in Korea The social exchange perspective considers intergenerational relationship as an exchange of aids and rewards between generations. However due to strong norm of filial duty and inadequate welfare system, supporting old parents is regarded as younger generation's duty in Korea This study utilizes a survey data conducted by Kim et al.(2000). Major findings can be summarized as follows. First, the middle aged who gives one-sided supports to their parents tends to have the traditional attitude on old parents' security. It implies that intergenerational support relationship in Korea is not consistent with the explanations from the social exchange perspective. This study suggests a 'chained reward system'as an altermative explaining the intergenerational relationship. Second, an absolute majority of the middle aged tend to think that they are responsible for their own old-age security regardless of the pattern of intergenerational support relationship and attitudes on old parents' security. It implies that the middle aged in Korea holds the status of 'marginal men' who supports their parents but can't take the similar supports from their children.
This study aimed to assess the feasibility and impact of a 5-week parent-led home-based music program for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The program aimed to enhance the parents' sense of competence and their relationships with their child. Each week for 5 weeks, 10 parents of 10 children with ASD (aged 3 to 9 years) received weekly 30-minute personalized lessons on how to implement the home-based music program and implemented the educated music program at home with activities involving receptive and active engagement. On average, the parents conducted the music program 2.5 times a week for about 9.2 minutes per session. At the end of the 5 weeks, parents reported increased comfort and effectiveness in interacting with their child through music. In addition, positive changes were noted on the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale and the closeness aspect of the parent-child relationship. Participants affirmed the program's feasibility, emphasizing its potential for supporting families with children with ASD. These results provide foundational data for future home-based music activities and programs, emphasizing the importance of tailoring interventions to the unique needs of families with children with ASD.

The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and the limits of, as well as, Propose an improvement of, the government based policies that support poor single families. For this purpose, this study has analyzed the government based supporting policies for poor single families into four different aspects; income support, dwelling support, medical support, and child-caring support. Also, in order to analyze the situation of the poor single family as well as the limits of the government based supporting policies, an in-depth interview has been conducted with 8 personnel (including 7 single parents and 1 social worker). In the final analysis, a total of 5 case studies have been used to identify the characteristics of the government based supporting policies for various poor single families. As a result, it turned out that the economic situation of the poor single families were extremely unfavorable, and the quality of life was extremely low in the aspects of dwelling, nutrition, health child nurturing and education. Therefore, we are proposing the following supporting policies for the improvement of these families' living conditions: increasing income levels, providing job opportunities, securing dwelling places, providing medical support, and implementing child care benefit policies. Furthermore, we are proposing an expansion of the human services provided by the healthy family support center to these poor single families.
This is a case study with the objectives of performing an in-depth investigation of the development process, outcome, and the factors related to the development process of Jinggomdari-the self-help group for divorced single parents at Wolgye social welfare center. Document review, in-depth interviews of the member/practitioner/middle manager, and participatory observations were performed and qualitatively analyzed. The results showed that the development process of Jinggomdari consisted of 4 phases including initiation, formation of basis, growth, and expansion/independence. Two categories including 'nurturing abilities and growth as an individual or within families or communities' and 'beyond Jinggomdari, into society', 6 subcategories, and 31 concepts were derived as the outcome. In terms of the factors related to the development process and outcome, 6 categories including 'members participating with sympathy despite various issues', 'outstanding and stabilized leadership', 'commitment of the practitioners showing utmost efforts despite shortcomings', 'effective functions as the hub supporting the low-income divorced single parents families based on the institution's firm determination', 'mixed group showing cautious but synergistic effects', 'dilemma of managing the low-income divorced single parents self-help group and lack of manual for management', 20 subcategories, and 61 concepts were derived. Management issues concerning low-income divorced single parents' self-help group was discussed based on these results.
Given the ongoing discussion regarding remote music therapy following the COVID-19 pandemic and the pivotal role of parental involvement in it, this study investigated parents' perceptions on their roles in a synchronous videoconferencing music therapy for their children with developmental disabilities. A total of 32 participants participated in an online survey comprising 68 questions. Descriptive statistics summarized the collected responses, and Pearson's correlation was conducted to examine the relationship between perceived parental roles, psychological burden, and willingness to participate in future remote music therapy. The findings showed that parents of children with developmental disabilities acknowledged the benefits of tele-music therapy and possessed substantial information about its implementation. Furthermore, they reported their roles of providing physical, participatory, and mediating support. As parents exhibited greater satisfaction with their role in supporting their children's participation or managing their off-task behaviors, they perceived reduced psychological burden. These findings hold significant implications for expansion of tele-music therapy strategies to address the unique needs of children with developmental disabilities and support their parents as immediate mediators for their children.
The purpose of this study was to explore the normative expectations of positive emotions such as happiness and pride in Korean culture by analyzing the children's textbooks in the Chosen Dynasty period. The method of this study was document analysis and the materials for analysis were 'Dongmongsensp', 'Gyukmongyogyul', 'Myungimbogam', and 'Sohak', that were the textbooks for children's education and invoked the ethics of individual life based on Confucianism. The analysis was focused on the antecedent events, emotional consequences, and emotional regulation in the emotional process of happiness and pride. According to the analysis, happiness was caused by the accomplishment of cultural tasks such as supporting parents, observing laws, being moderate, improving oneself with reading good books, and modeling good deeds, as well as parents' love, which had desirable consequences. Hence, the emotional regulation was to enhance happiness, but far as immoderate experience of happiness, the regulatory rule was expected to suppress it. Also, the antecedents of pride were those demonstrating to have power or occupying a high social position, and the consequences of pride led to self-destruction, and pride was therefore not allowed to be expressed. Consequently, happiness was enhanced because it motivated individuals to accomplish cultural tasks of interdependence, whereas pride was inhibited because it tended to disengage self from social connectedness.
The purpose of this study was to find possible solutions to the aged-related problem that is emerging as one of serious social issues in Korea by investigating the images young people have toward the aged. The questionnaire-based survey for this study was conducted with 643 middle school students representing teens and 523 undergraduates representing young people in the twenties, who were 592 from Daegu and 574 from Gwangju. It was carried out from December 2000 to March 2001. The data were analyzed in frequency(N), percentage(%), mean(M) and standard deviation(SD) through the SPSSWIN 10.0 program, $x^2-test$ and reliability test. The findings are summarized as follows. 52.5% of respondents reported that they had the experience in living together with their grandparents, while the number of respondents currently living together with their parents just accounted for 17.6%. In the question about the sense of value for family life, it was shown that the traditional idea that an eldest son or other son has the duty of supporting parents was positively changed to one that any of sons or daughters may support parents. The entire image toward the aged appeared to be positive with the mean value of 3.62. Things associated with the aged were the respect-for-aged house and a stick in that order. The images young people perceive towards the aged were largely divided into the 13 items image including the community centers for the aged.
The purpose of this study was to offer suggestions for students, teachers, and parents, respectively, to develop effective gifted education programs in Korea by examining the programs from Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth (PTY) at Tennessee in the USA. The method is based on the analyses of PTY web pages, recent materials on programs from PTY, interviews with the executive director of PTY, participation in the endorsement program, and observation in SAVY(Saturday Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young) program. In order to improve gifted education programs in Korea, the results indicate as follows: in respect to students, early identification and education, interdisciplinary humanities curriculums, integrated curriculum models, and information of individual learning plans are essential; in regards to teachers, tailored gifted teacher programs and gifted endorsement programs are necessary; in consideration of parents, programs for supporting parents' groups with professional gifted educators are indispensible.
The purpose of this study is to compare perceptions toward multicultural adolescents' career problems between multicultural adolescents and parents with multicultural backgrounds and youth and parents in non-multicultural families and to discuss their differences. For this purpose, the data from 825 respondents were analyzed using correspondent analysis. The results follow as: first, multicultural adolescents tended to agree very much with the difficulties of interpersonal relations, distance from appearance, and economic difficulties while non-multicultural adolescents tended to disagree with. Second, both multicultural and non-multicultural adolescents disagreed with the confusion about identity as Koreans, but parents of non-multicultural adolescents showed a negative perception. Third, in terms of education and institutions, multicultural adolescents recognized the strong need for expanding career education opportunities for multicultural students, supporting employment, strengthening access to career information, and professional help for careers compared to non-multicultural adolescents.
