A Note on Estimating and Managing Groundwater Reserves (지하수 부존량 평가와 관리에 대한 소고)

  • This study was conducted to estimate groundwater reserves within a designated depth. Three methods were applied to one representative county in southern Gyeongsang province, South Korea, to estimate the groundwater reserves in the aquifers. Estimated amounts of groundwater reserves in the region ranged from $20.2{\times}10^9m^3$ to $68.7{\times}10^9m^3$ (average $37.9{\times}10^9m^3$). Groundwater recharge obtained with a recharge ratio of 16.6% was $1.1{\times}10^9m^3/year$. Exploitable groundwater with an assumption of decadal-cycle minimal rainfall of 977.0 mm/year was approximated as 72% ($0.8{\times}10^9m^3/year$) of the total replenished water by recharge. The volume of recharge and exploitable water accounted for only 1.1% and 0.8% of groundwater reserves, respectively, which indicates substantial capacity of the reservoir to supply groundwater in an event of unexpected droughts. Nonetheless, each groundwater well should strictly comply with its allocated pumping rate to avoid alluvial groundwater depletion.

Studies on mycotoxins using LC-MS/MS for the forage produced in Incheon

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the contamination level of representative mycotoxins that have adverse effects on livestock by using LC-MS/MS method and to utilize the results as basic data for the establishment of quality control system for feed, and to provide information on production and storage. A total of nine mycotoxins, including aflatoxin $B_1$, aflatoxin $B_2$, aflatoxin $G_1$, aflatoxin $G_2$, ochratoxin A, fumonisin $B_1$, fumonisin $B_2$, deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN) were simultaneously analyzed in LC-MS/MS under ESI positive mode. Fumonisin $B_1$ and fumonisin $B_2$ were detected from 3 cases of 75 forage produced in Incheon area, the detection rate was 4.0%. The detection concentration was 0.01~0.02 mg/kg, which was lower than the domestic recommended limit. Fumonisins were detected in a slightly different manner from the results of mycotoxin studies reported in Korea, which is attributed to the high temperature and dry summer weather of the year. The result of LC-MS/MS method performance of 9 mycotoxins, the recovery of DON was quite low as $41.53{\pm}3.91%$ that is not suitable for simultaneous analysis. This is probably due to that the extract solution used in this study was not suitable for the extraction of DON, along with the characteristics of a very dry forage. For the study of mycotoxins in Incheon area forage for the first time, further investigation is needed for the safe supply of livestock products.

A Clock System including Low-power Burst Clock-data Recovery Circuit for Sensor Utility Network (Sensor Utility Network를 위한 저전력 Burst 클록-데이터 복원 회로를 포함한 클록 시스템)

  • A clock system is proposed to eliminate data loss due to frequency difference between sensor nodes in a sensor utility network. The proposed clock system for each sensor node consists of a bust clock-data recovery (CDR) circuit, a digital phase-locked loop outputting a 32-phase clock, and a digital frequency synthesizer using a programmable open-loop fractional divider. A CMOS oscillator using an active inductor is used instead of a burst CDR circuit for the first sensor node. The proposed clock system is designed by using a 65 nm CMOS process with a 1.2 V supply voltage. When the frequency error between the sensor nodes is 1%, the proposed burst CDR has a time jitter of only 4.95 ns with a frequency multiplied by 64 for a data rate of 5 Mbps as the reference clock. Furthermore, the frequency change of the designed digital frequency synthesizer is performed within one period of the output clock in the frequency range of 100 kHz to 320 MHz.

Analysis of Liquefied Layer Activities Considering Erosion and Sedimentation of Debris Flow (토석류의 침식 및 퇴적을 고려한 유동층의 거동 분석)

  • Heavy rainfall is in causing debris flow by recent climate change and causes much damage in the downstream. The debris flow from the mountainous area runs to the downstream, repeating sedimentation and erosion, and appears as a fluidized soil-water mixture. Continuity equation and momentum equation were applied to analyze the debris flow with strong mobility, and the sedimentation and erosion velocity with fine particle fractions were also applied. This study is to analyze the behavior of debris flow at the downstream end for the variation of the amount of sediments can occur in the upstream of the mountain. Analysis of sediment volume concentration at the downstream end of the channel due to the variance of the length of pavement of the granulated soils resulted in the higher the supply flow discharge and the longer the length of pavement, the greater the difference in the level of sediment concentration and the earlier the point of occurrence of the inflection point. The results of this study will provide good information for determining the erosion-sedimentation velocity rate which can detect erosion and sedimentation on steep slopes.

A Study on the Cooperative Housing for Foreign Students Education (외국인 유학생 교육을 위한 공동기숙사에 관한 연구)

  • Amid concentrating on inviting foreign students in the aspect of securing talents as well as advanced educational service industry in the world, the number of foreign students in Korea exceeded over 90,000 in 2015, increased to 104,262 anticipating further increase according to National Statistical Office. The government tried to expand the dormitory supply to the foreign students upon the discretion that short of the basic infrastructure in the universities such as quantitative shortage and facilities of the dormitories limited to lure the foreign students, despite the will of inviting more foreign students by the government, however, the rate of foreign students' staying in the dormitories was low with 36.0% nationwide in 2016, reflecting the difficulties of residence for the foreign students in Metropolitan areas. Hence, this study is to suggest the alternative potential as the cooperative housing for the foreign students with the expanded concept and its foundation methods, upon reviewing the concept and trend of the common dormitory such as universities-cooperative housing with the initiative of public institutions and the common dormitories for the Korean students studying in Seoul, and analyzing the university city of Paris and Tokyo International Exchange Center that are the examples of existing cooperative housing in overseas.

The Dynamic Relationship between Household Loans of Depository Institutions and Housing Prices after the Financial Crisis (금융위기 이후 예금취급기관 가계대출과 주택가격의 동태적 관계)

  • Purpose - This study aims in analyzing the dynamic relationship between household loans and housing prices according to the characteristics of depository institutions after the financial crisis, identifying the recent trends between them, and making policy suggestions for stabilizing house prices. Design/methodology/approach - The monthly data used in this study are household loans, household loan interest rates, and housing prices ranging from January 2012 to May 2020, and came from ECOS of the Bank of Korea and Liiv-on of Kookmin Bank. This study used vector auto-regression, generalized impulse response function, and forecast error variance decomposition with the data so as to yield analysis results. Findings - The analysis of this study no more shows that the household loan interest rates in both deposit banks and non-bank deposit institutions had statistically significant effects on housing prices. Also, unlike the previous studies, there was statistically significant bi-directional causality between housing prices and household loans in neither deposit banks nor non-bank deposit institutions. Rather, it was found that there is a unidirectional causality from housing prices to household loans in deposit banks, which is considered that housing prices have one-sided effects on household loans due to the overheated housing market after the financial crisis. Research implications or Originality - As a result, Korea's housing market is closely related to deposit banks, and housing prices are acting as more dominant information variables than interest rates or loans under the long-term low interest rate trend. Therefore, in order to stabilize housing prices, the housing supply must be continuously made so that everyone can enjoy housing services equally. In addition, the expansion and reinforcement of the social security net should be realized systematically so as to stop households from being troubled with the housing price decline.

Design of AES Cryptographic Processor with Modular Round Key Generator (모듈화된 라운드 키 생성회로를 갖는 AES 암호 프로세서의 설계)

  • In this paper a design of high performance cryptographic processor which implements AES Rijndael algorithm is described. To eliminate performance degradation due to round-key computation delay of conventional processor, the on-the-fly precomputation of round key based on modified round structure is adopted. And on-the-fly round key generator which supports 128, 192, and 256-bit key has modular structure. The designed processor has iterative structure which uses 1 clock cycle per round and supports three operation modes, such as ECB, CBC, and CTR mode which is a candidate for new AES modes of operation. The cryptographic processor designed in Verilog-HDL and synthesized using 0.251$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS cell library consists of about 51,000 gates. Simulation results show that the critical path delay is about 7.5ns and it can operate up to 125Mhz clock frequency at 2.5V supply. Its peak performance is about 1.45Gbps encryption or decryption rate under 128-bit key ECB mode.

  • A 12-bit 10-MS/s pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is proposed for image processing applications. The proposed pipeline ADC consists of a sample and hold amplifier, three stages, a 3-bit flash analog-to-digital converter, and a digital error corrector. Each stage is operated by using a 4-bit flash ADC (FADC) and a multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC). The proposed sample and hold amplifier increases the voltage gain using gain boosting for the ADC with high resolution. The proposed pipelined ADC is designed using a 180-nm CMOS process with a supply voltage of 1.8 and it has an effective number of bit (ENOB) of 10.52 bits at sampling rate of 10MS/s for a 1-Vpp differential sinusoidal analog input with frequency of 1 MHz. The measured ENOB is 10.12 bits when the frequency of the sinusoidal analog input signal is a Nyquist frequency of approximately 5 MHz.

Using Taguchi design of experiments for the optimization of electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane scaffolds

  • Electrospinning is a cost-effective and versatile method for producing submicron fibers. Although this method is relatively simple, at the theoretical level the interactions between process parameters and their influence on the fiber morphology are not yet fully understood. In this paper, the aim was finding optimal electrospinning parameters in order to obtain the smallest fiber diameter by using Taguchi's methodology. The nanofibers produced by electrospinning a solution of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) in Dimethylformamide (DMF). Polymer concentration and process parameters were considered as the effective factors. Taguchi's L9 orthogonal design (4 parameters, 3 levels) was applied to the experiential design. Optimal electrospinning conditions were determined using the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio with Minitab 17 software. The morphology of the nanofibers was studied by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Thereafter, a tensile tester machine was used to assess mechanical properties of nanofibrous scaffolds. The analysis of DoE experiments showed that TPU concentration was the most significant parameter. An optimum combination to reach smallest diameters was yielded at 12 wt% polymer concentration, 16 kV of the supply voltage, 0.1 ml/h feed rate and 15 cm tip-to-distance. An empirical model was extracted and verified using confirmation test. The average diameter of nanofibers at the optimum conditions was in the range of 242.10 to 257.92 nm at a confidence level 95% which was in close agreement with the predicted value by the Taguchi technique. Also, the mechanical properties increased with decreasing fibers diameter. This study demonstrated Taguchi method was successfully applied to the optimization of electrospinning conditions for TPU nanofibers and the presented scaffold can mimic the structure of Extracellular Matrix (ECM).

Effect of Real Estate Holding Type on Household Debt

  • Purpose: This study aims to provide implications for the government's housing supply policy by analyzing the factors that determine the type of real estate holding and household debt. This study started from the awareness that the determinants of household debt differ depending on the type of real estate holding. Research design, data and methodology: Real estate ownership type was classified and analyzed into 4 models: model 1 (1 household 1 house and self-resident), model 2 (1 household multiple real estate ownership and self-resident), model 3 (1 household 1 house and rent residence), model 4 (1 household holds a large number of real estate and rent residence). The analysis method used multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable was household total debt. As independent variables, household debt, annual gross household income, financial assets, real estate net assets, annual repayment, demographic & residential characteristics were used. Results: 1) Model 4 has the highest household debt and the highest gross income, Model 2 has the most real estate mortgage loans and real estate net asset, and Model 1 has the highest real estate mortgage payments. 2) The positive factor of common household debt determinants is real estate net assets, and the negative factor is financial assets. 3) It was the net assets of real estate that acted as a positive factor in common for the four models. In other words, the more financial assets, the less household debt. It was analyzed that the more net assets of real estate, the more household debt. The annual repayment of financial liabilities had no influence on household debt, while the annual repayment of loan liabilities and household debt had a positive relationship. Conclusions: 1) It is necessary to introduce benefits and systems that can increase the proportion of household financial asset. Specific alternatives include tax benefits and reduced fees for financial asset investment. 2) In the case where a homeless person prepares one house for one household, it is necessary to prepare various support measures according to the income level. The specific alternative is to give additional points for pre-sale or apply an interest rate cut incentive for mortgage loans.
