  • In order to predict the cooling performance of a regenerative cooling channel using hydrocarbon fuel operating in the supercritical region, it is essential to predict the thermodynamic properties. In this study, a comparative analysis was performed on two-parameter equations of state (SRK(Soave-Redlich-Kwong), PR(Peng-Robinson) equations of state) and three-parameter equations of state (RK-PR equations of state) to appropriately predict density and specific heat according to the critical compressibility factor of polymer hydrocarbons. Representatively, n-dodecane fuel with low critical compressibility factor and JP-10 fuel with high critical compressibility factor were selected, and an appropriate equation of state was presented when predicting the thermodynamic properties of the two fuels. Finally, the prediction results of density and specific heat were compared and verified with NIST REFPROP data.

  • The vaporization characteristics of a liquid heptane droplet in a supercritical nitrogen flow are numerically studied. The transient conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species are expressed in an axisymmetric coordinate system. The governing equations are solved time marching method with preconditioning scheme. The modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state is employed for taking account of real gas effects such as thermodynamic non-ideality and transport anomaly. Changing the convective velocity and ambient pressure, several parametric studies are conducted. The numerical results show that the two parameters, Reynolds number and dimensionless combined parameter(${\mu}$s/${\mu}$d)(equation omitted), have influence on supercritical droplet vaporization.

  • This study presents a prediction methodology of thermodynamic properties by using RK-PR Equation of State in a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions including both sub-critical and super-critical regions, in order to obtain thermophysical properties for hydrocarbon aviation fuels and their products resulting from endothermic reactions. The density and the constant pressure specific heat are predicted in the temperature range from 300 to 1000 K and the pressure from 0.1 to 5.0 MPa, which includes all of the liquid and gas phases and the super-critical region of three representative hydrocarbon fuels, and then compared with those data obtained from the NIST database. Results show that the averaged relative deviations of both predicted density and constant pressure specific heat are below 5% in the specified temperature and pressure conditions, and the major sources of the errors are observed near the saturation line and the critical point of each fuel.

  • In this work, we developed supercritical fluid chromatographic methods for the samples which are difficult to analyze with conventional GC or HPLC. Long-chain Hydrocarbons, mink oils and soybean oils unsuitable for GC because of their low volatility or limited thermal stability were separated by SFC due to the high solvating properties of supercritical carbon dioxide fluids. In our research, a new method for the analysis of polar fatty acids and pesticides was developed. This method should be used to overcome problems with polar samples in SFC.

  • Droplet vaporization at various ambient pressures is studied numerically by formulating one dimensional evaporation model in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. The modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used to account for the real gas effects in the high pressure condition. Non-ideal thermodynamic and transport properties at near critical and supercritical conditions are considered. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. The droplet lifetime increases with increasing pressure at temperature lower than the critical temperature, however, it decreases with increasing pressure at temperature higher than the critical temperature. The solubility of nitrogen can not be neglected in the high pressure and it becomes higher as the temperature and the pressure go up.

  • For the study of thermophysical properties of kerosene for the liquid rocket and aviation fuels, the surrogate models are investigated. The density distributions based on the real gas equations of state(Soave modification of Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson equation of state) and NIST SUPERTRAPP(extended corresponding state principle) are compared with the previous experimental results at supercritical conditions. The error range of thermophysical properties analyzed for the surrogate models as well. Peng-Robinson equation of state and extended corresponding state principle are especially accurate for the hydrocarbon fuels but the appropriate surrogate models need to be chosen to the operation conditions such as pressure and temperature.

  • After the successful flight test of X-43A, U.S. Airforce is developing missile-type X-51A SED (Scramjet Engine Demonstrator-Wave Rider). X-51A using PWR (Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne) X-1 hydrocarbon fueled scramjet engine will have a ground test in 2008 and flight test in 2009. Technologies established though the X-51A program will be transferred to DARPA's Falcon program developing HTV (Hypersonic Test Vehicle)-3X and HCV (Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle). Present paper is an overview of propulsion core technologies of X-51 such as regenerative cooling of engine structures and combustion using liquid/supercritical JP-7 fuel.

  • This study presents a prediction methodology of transport properties using the methane-based TRAPP (m-TRAPP) method in a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions including both subcritical and supercritical regions, in order to obtain thermo-physical properties for hydrocarbon aviation fuels and their products resulting from endothermic reactions. The viscosity and thermal conductivity are predicted in the temperature range from 300 to 1000 K and the pressure from 0.1 to 5.0 MPa, which includes all of the liquid, gas, and the supercitical regions of representative hydrocarbon fuels. The predicted values are compared with those data obtained from the NIST database. It was demonstrated that the m-TRAPP method can give reasonable predictions of both viscosity and thermal conductivity in the wide range of temperature and pressure conditions studied in this paper. However, there still exists large discrepancy between the current data and established values by NIST, especially for the liquid phase. Compared to the thermal conductivity predictions, the calculated viscosities are in better agreement with the NIST database. In order to consider a wide range of conditions, it is suggested to select an appropriate method through further comparison with another improved prediction methodologies of transport properties.

  • Fisher-Tropsch synthesis for the production of hydrocarbon from syngas was investigated on 20% cobalt-based catalysts (20% Co/HSA, 20% Co/Si-MMS), which were prepared by home-made supports with high surface areas such as high surface alumina (HSA) and silica mesopores molecular sieve (Si-MMS). In the gas phase reaction by syngas only, 20% Co/Si-MMS catalyst was shown in higher CO conversion and lower carbon dioxide formation than 20% Co/HSA, whereas the olefin selectivity was higher in 20% Co/HSA than in 20% Co/Si-MMS. In the effect of n-hexane added in syngas, the selectivities of $C_{5+}$ and olefin were increased by comparing the supercritical phase reaction with the gas phase reaction in addition to reduce unexpected methane and carbon dioxide.

  • With petroleum reserves dwindling, interest has been increasing worldwide in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FT) as a method of producing synthetic liquid fuels and chemicals from coal, natural gas or biomass. In general, FT synthesis is operated through the gas phase fixed-bed reaction system. Recently, there are lots of study in supercritical fluid due to unique characteristics such as the quick diffusion of reactant gas, effective removal of reaction heat, and the in-situ extraction of high molecular weight hydrocarbon, such as wax. In this study, our major aim is to obtain a deeper insight into the effect of the type of support on the reaction performance over a supported cobalt catalyst in a fixed bed reactor.
