• We investigated characteristics of new particle formation and growth events observed at Gosan climate observatory using Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) measurements of particle number size distribution with 54 size ranges from 10 to 487 nm in October 2009. Four days (17~20 October) and five days (22~26 October) were classified into strong new particle formation and growth event ($N_S$) and weak particle formation and growth event ($N_W$), respectively. $N_S$ and $N_W$ divided by increase of aerosol number concentration in nucleation mode and continuity of growth from nucleation to Aitken mode. Particle growth rates of $N_S$ (5.34~$9.19nm\;h^{-1}$) were greater than that of $N_W$ (2.15~$3.53nm\;h^{-1}$). $N_S$ and $N_W$ were analyzed with synoptic pattern over East Asia, meteorological elements, and sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) measured at Gosan. We found that $N_S$ was characterized by a fast and northwesterly wind accompanied cold and dry airmass, but $N_W$ was affected airmass originated from South China and come through the Korea Peninsula. The events ($N_S$ and $N_W$) occurred at conditions of high solar flux ($>700W\;m^{-2}$) and low relative humidity (< 60%). The $SO_2$ concentration on $N_S$ and $N_W$ was higher than that on case of non observed new particle formation.

 • This investigation was carried out to clarify the changes of pigments and soluble protein, and photosystem II activity in the leaves of barley (${SO}_2$-sensitive) and corn (${SO}_2$-resistant) seedlings induced by the ${SO}_2$ fumigation (10, 50ppm). The pH changes of the leaf extract, the content of sulfite and sulfate, the activities of catalase, peroxidase, and polyphenoloxidase were compared in the leaves of barley and corn seedlings induced by ${SO}_2$ fumigation. The results are summarized as follows: An appreciable effect of pH change of leaf extract by ${SO}_2$ fumigation was observed in barley leaves (pH 6.10 to 5.18), but only a small change occurred in corn leaves (pH 5.66 to 5.50). The same pattern of pH changes was recorded when the solution of 0.2N HCl was added to leaf extract, providing lower buffering capacity of the barley leaves than corn leaves. After 2 hours of exposure to 10 ppm ${SO}_2$, the contents of ${SO}^{2-}_3$ and ${SO}^{2-}_4$ were increased in barley leaves, while only ${SO}^{2-}_4$ increased in corn leaves. After fumigation with 10ppm ${SO}_2$ for 2 hours, barley leaves showed significant decreases in activities of catalase, to 17% peroxidase, to 58%, and polyphenoloxidase, to 88%. Corn leaves showed increases in activities of peroxidase, to 136%, and polyphenoloxidase, to 128%. Absorption spectra of pigments obtained from ${SO}_2$-fumigated leaves were gradually decreased with the fumigation time increases, but the decrease was more significant in barley leaves. Fumigation with 50ppm ${SO}_2$ for 2 hours induced the greatest decomposition in carotenoid, followed by chlorophyll a and then chlorophyll b in barley leaves. The ratio of chlorophyll a/b was decreased from 4.1 to 3.6 in barley leaves, but in corn leaves it was maintained almost a constant level(4.9-4.8). The rate of decomposition of chlorophyll and carotenoid in corn leaves was very slow than those in the barley leaves. Fumigation with 50 ppm ${SO}_2$ for 2 hous, decreased the protein content of barley leaves to 59%, and that of corn leaves to 89%, and the extent of decrease in protein content was greater than that of pigments in barley and corn leaves. The rate of DCIP9dichlorophenol indophenol) photoreduction in ${SO}_2$-fumigated leaves was decreased to 18 and 67% in barley and corn leaves, respectively. However, DCIP photoreduction was considerably recovered about 32 and 92% with the addition of DPC(diphenylcarbazide) as an exogenous electron donor in barley and corn leaves, respectively.

 • In this present study, we quantified the $SO_2$ effect on $O_3$ retrieval from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurement. The difference between OMI-Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and OMI-Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer (DOAS) total $O_3$ is calculated in high $SO_2$ volcanic plume on several volcanic eruptions (Anatahan, La Cumbre, Sierra Negra, and Piton) from 2005 through 2008. There is a certain correlation ($R{\geq}0.5$) between the difference and $OMI-SO_2$ in volcanic plumes and the significant difference close to 100 DU. The high $SO_2$ condition found to affect TOMS $O_3$ retrieval significantly due to a strong $SO_2$ absorption at the TOMS $O_3$ retrieval wavelengths. Besides, we calculated the difference against various $SO_2$ levels. There is the considerable difference (average = 32.9 DU; standard deviation = 13.5 DU) in the high $OMI-SO_2$ condition ($OMI-SO_2{\geq}7.0DU$). We also found that the rate of change in the difference per 1.0 DU change in middle troposphere (TRM) and upper troposphere and stratosphere (STL) $SO_2$ columns are 3.9 DU and 4.9 DU, respectively.

 • In this study, a torrefaction of Quercus serrata to manufacture a molded charcoal was performed, investigated material properties, fuel characteristics, and performed a quantitative analysis of hazardous gases which occur during a combustion process. In addition, a molded charcoal in market was selected as a control group, and a comparative analysis was performed. As a result, the higher heating value (HHV) of the torrefied specimen was about 14% higher than that of molded charcoal, and its ash content was about 51 times lower. Moreover, after performing a quantitative assessment of hazardous gases (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide) which were produced when each specimen was combusted for 900 seconds in an enclosed chamber, it was confirmed that the maximum value of generated amount of carbon monoxide on the torrefied specimen was about 50 times lower than that of the existing molded charcoal. Therefore, it was shown that the torrefied specimen produced in this study had a higher heating value than the molded charcoal in the market, and a very low amount of carbon monoxide generated during the combustion process.

 • Many greenhouse gases occur naturally, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. Others such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride ($SF_6$) result exclusively from human industrial processes. Current global warming has been linked to anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentration increases. Methods to quantify greenhouse gas emissions during animal agriculture and the possibility to apply those to circumstance in the world were studied. Various chamber methods with trace gas analyzer (TGA) were used to quantify greenhouse gas emissions from stored manure. Methane fluxes from pails storing liquid swine manure were measured. Methane emissions increased a little with time and mean was 393.2 ${\mu}g\;m^{-2}\;s{-1}$ (standard error : 4 ${\mu}g\;m^{-2}\;s{-1}$).

 • The objective of this study is to examine the removal rate of air pollutants, specifically sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides(NOx), using concrete permeable blocks containing zeolite beads coated with materials capable of eliminating these pollutants. Titanium dioxide(TiO2) powder and coconut shell powder were utilized for the removal of SOx and NOx and were applied as coatings on the zeolite beads. Concrete permeable block specimens embedded with the coated zeolite beads were produced using an actual factory production line. Test results demonstrated that the concrete permeable block containing zeolite beads coated with coconut shell powder in the surface layer achieved SOx and NOx removal rates of 12.5% and 99%, respectively, exhibiting superior performance compared to other blocks. Additionally, the flexural strength and slip resistance were 5.3MPa and 65BPN or higher, respectively, satisfying the requirements specified in KS F 4419 and KS F 4561. Conversely, the permeability coefficient exhibited low permeability, with grades 2 and 3 before and after contaminant pollution, according to the standard for 'design, construction, and maintenance of pavement using permeable block'. In conclusion, incorporating zeolite beads coated with coconut shell powder in the surface layer enables simultaneous removal of SOx and NOx, irrespective of ultraviolet rays, while maintaining adequate flexural strength and slip resistance. However, the permeability is significantly reduced, necessitating further improvements.

 • Annals of the Joseon Dynasty is the authentic record of the historical facts and events taken place throughout the entire period of 472 years(25 generations, 1392~1863)described in a chronological order. The tremendous volume of the records contains the factual events taken place in almost all the fields of the Joseon Dynasty ranging from politics, economy to history of the dynasty. Not only because of its affluent contents but also with the precision of its records, it was designated as the National Treasure No. 151 in1973 by the Korean government and also registered as the Memory of the World by UNESCO in October 1997.This study is to report a exhaustive investigation results on the conservation state of annals of the Joseon Dynasty, especially Mt. Jeongjoksan edition, under the storage of the Kyujanggak in order to obtain the current condition, and thereby to estimate the any deterioration of the waxed volumes in the future. According to results of the investigation, we are going to verify damage causes of annals of the Joseon Dynasty, and to consider scientific conservation methods for the permanent preservation of invaluable cultural heritage. The major problem with the preservation of annals has arisen particularly from the deterioration of the waxed volumes of the Mt. Jeongjoksan edition. In order to provide for the counter measures for this problem, we have conducted twice investigations(first :1998~1999, second : 2003) to the internal and external conditions of waxed volumes(Annals of King Taejo~Annals of King Myeongjong). The result of the investigation has indicated that the paper quality of the some of the waxed volumes (Annals of King Taejong~Annals of King Sejong) is cracked and folded and the pages are imbedded to each other due to the hardened or congealed wax on the paper. Some of the pages are even getting moldy. And in order to detect as to whether“ there has been any deterioration progressed to the waxed books in the modern storage facility of the Kyujanggak equipped with constant temperature and humidity condition, the first investigation(1998~1999) and the second investigation(2003) have recorded the values of acidity, whiteness and moisture rate of the waxed paper, reporting an observation that there has been no difference on the measuring items. This indicates that no virtual deterioration has been progressed so far to the waxed volumes preserved in the Kyujanggak. Also, except for the causes of deterioration to the paper by insects and microorganisms, the major cause for the paper damage seems to the change of moisture of the paper caused from the alteration of the temperature and humidity of the storage environment. With this understanding in mind, we have conducted an environmental investigation on the three selected points of the storage in the aspects of the temperature, humidity, air current, $CO_2$,HCHO, and $SO_2$.It has been observed that the temperature stood at $16.9^{\circ}C~20.2^{\circ}C$ and the humidity was stable between 53%~56% during the period of the investigation. The concentration of the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide of the storage were very similar to those in the air. These data lead to presume that there is no problem in the aspect of carbon oxidization. But the concentration of sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and formaldehyde of the storage were detected a little higher than those of standard. Therefore, we consider that it is necessary to ventilate the internal air of the store room by means of operating air purification devices.

 • The effect of $SO_2$ treated pads (Sodium metabisulphate 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 g/kg) on the quality of dried persimmons and dried persimmons slices were investigated. The $SO_2$ treated pads did not affect to weight, moisture loss rate, and soluble solid contents of dried persimmons and dried persimmons slices. The color change (${\Delta}E$) of dried persimmons and dried persimmons slices after storage for 8 weeks were the highest (value=6.0, 6.2) in control, whereas that was the lowest (value=4.8, 4.7) under $SO_2$ pad 2.0 g/kg condition, respectively. When we measured the browning degree of dried persimmons, they showed O.D. 0.65, 0.57, 0.29, and 0.18 in serial dilution treated pads with $SO_2$ pad 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g/kg. The browning degree data from aforementioned dried persimmons after 8 weeks was similar to that from dried persimmons slices. The decay rate of dried persimmons and dried persimmons slices after storage for 8 weeks were the highest (value=33.3%, 36.7%) in control, whereas that was the lowest (value=3.3%, 6.7%) under $SO_2$ pad 2.0 g/kg condition, respectively. The concentration of residual $SO_2$ in dried persimmons and dried persimmons slices were detected within a safe range of 15.3~30.0 ppm. Therefore, the shelf-life of dried persimmons and dried persimmons slices were lengthened in $SO_2$ treated pads (especially in $SO_2$ pad 2.0 g/kg) for inhibiting of browning and decay.
