  • This paper presents the overview of development of substation automation system. The prototypes of SA system are developed in first phase, and being enhanced the performance in second phase. In this research, the project was classified into three projects which are the development of intelligent electronic devices, the development of operation system and communication network in substation, and the development of technology to verify the compatibility of IEC 61850. As a result of this research, the domestic-made SA system are operated and tested for the performance in 154kV substation and/or test-bed in KEPCO PT Center.

  • In this paper a preventative and diagnostic system for high and ultra high voltage electric power transmission apparatus is proposed to secure substation normal operation. The proposed system consists of monitoring sub-system and diagnostic sub-system, which are mainly for GIS and main transformer, and the system will be applied for newly established 765kV class substation in Korea. Some guideline for combination with substation control system are presented, and engineering solution as an improved substation automation system is also proposed.

  • Because the existing Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for the conventional substation cannot dynamically indicate the configuration information of the Substation Automation System (SAS). In this paper, an intelligent station HMI is proposed for IEC 61850 based substation. The program of the proposed HMI not only can automatically generate the layout of single line diagram, but can also indicate the communication network and functions of IEDs by reading SCL files. It greatly helps monitor the operation status, communication network and each IED dynamically, such as failure detection in SAS. Furthermore, this paper presents the possibility of developing new software for SAS with the full use of IEC 61850-6. Once the software is complete, there is no need to change it when the substation is upgraded or when it is migrated to other IEC 61850 based substations, which is a cost-effective solution.

  • IEC 61850 based substation automation system is operating under digital network with a number of IEDs and a HMI as relation of server and client. In case of IEDs, before implementing the system, all of the system integrators require IEC 61850 certificate from individual IED manufacture. Otherwise, there is nothing to verify IED for constructing substation automation system at the real substation. This paper shows verification strategy of IEC 61850 communication reliability such as association /release, report, dataset and four type control function.

  • As the power system automation, especially the substation automation is currently a major issue, it has been widely studied. Since a measured value usually has an error that results in the communication process and the characteristics of a measurement device mainly depending on the reliability. The accuracy and reliability of measured values at a substation is an important factor for substation automation. In this paper, a state estimation algorithm is proposed for domestic 154kV/22.9kV distribution substations, and the results showed promising application.

  • Electrical energy supply interruption degrades reliability of power supply as well as social costs and economic loss. It is important to assess the reliability of the power system. Nowadays IEC61850 based substation automation system(SAS) has been developed for an updating of automation and interoperability. In this study, three kinds of reliability block diagram(RBD) were proposed to examine of network availability of the three types SAS. And reliability and unreliability of the SAS was formulated using the RBD. Finally, while varying the value of reliability and unreliability, the reliability and the unreliability of the overall system were evaluated.

  • 디지털 기술 기반의 차세대 변전시스템의 시스템 성능 검증을 위해 변전소 전력설비의 보호에 있어 가장 중요한 보호요소 중 하나인 차단기 실패 보호 IED를 대상으로 하는 IEC 61850 시스템 성능 시험 절차서를 구현하였다. 디지털 변전소에 대한 통신규격이 단일화되고 시스템이 디지털화됨에 따라 IED들은 상호 통신이 가능해지게 되었으며, 따라서 단일 IED의 전기 접점을 통해 이루어지던 예전의 시험방식에서 네트워크를 통한 시스템 차원의 시험방식으로 변화가 필요하게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 차단기 실패 보호 IED를 시스템적으로 시험할 수 있도록 UML을 이용한 성능시험절차서의 구현내용을 보여주고자 한다.

  • This paper gives a feasibility reference of integrating power automation for digital substation. An overview and techno-economical potential of IEC61850 are introduced. The result of economic analysis is shown to save up to one-third of the total cost of automation installation. The gained benefits can be used to increase the economy and reliability of electrical power system.

  • IEC 61850 based substation automation system mainly consists of human machine interface as a client and a various of IEDs as a server. Both of them should require the field testing for performance verification including IEC 61850 communication services. This means that the test can assure the interoperability of IEC 61850 based substation automation system consisted of multi vendor's products. This paper shows a research result on the field test of the IEC 61850 based HMI and IEDs. And it proposes some engineering solutions for the system implementation.
