  • This paper proposes a differential Colpitts-VCO circuit suitable for low phase noise oscillation at the sub-1V supply voltage. Oscillation with low phase noise at the sub-1V supply voltage is facilitated by employing inductors as the current sources of the proposed circuit. One of the two feedback capacitors of the single-ended Colpitts oscillator in the proposed circuit is replaced with the MOS varactor in order to further reduce the resonator loss. Post-layout simulation results using a $0.18{\mu}m$ RF CMOS technology show that the phase noises at the 1MHz offset frequency of the proposed circuit oscillating at the sub-1V supply voltages of 0.6 to 0.9 V are at least 7 dBc/Hz lower than those of the well-known cross-coupled differential VCO.

  • A CMOS frequency synthesizer for $5{\sim}6$ GHz UNII-band sub-harmonic direct-conversion receiver has been developed. For quadrature down-conversion with sub-harmonic mixing, octa-phase local oscillator (LO) signals are generated by an integer-N type phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer. The complex timing issue of feedback divider of the PLL with large division ratio is solved by using multimodulus prescaler. Phase noise of the local oscillator signal is improved by employing the ring-type LC-tank oscillator and switching its tail current source. Implemented in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, the phase noise of the LO signal is lower than -80 dBc/Hz and -113 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 1MHz offset, respect-tively. The measured reference spur is lower than -70 dBc and the power consumption is 40 m W from a 1.8 V supply voltage.

  • This study presents a hybrid balanced voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) circuit which is suitable for low phase noise operation at sub-1V supply voltages. Half circuits of the proposed VCO use the varactor-integrated feedback capacitors in their respective circuit. The varactor-integrated feedback capacitors further increase the negative resistance of the equivalent tank thereby ensuring stable start-up of oscillation even at the sub-1V supply voltage. In addition, this work theoretically analyses the phenomenon of the increase of the negative resistance. Simulation results using a $0.18{\mu}m$ RF CMOS technology exhibit the phase noises of -122.4 to -125.5.8 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from oscillation frequency of 4.87 GHz over the supply voltages of 0.6 through 0.9 V.

  • The voltage-controlled oscillator is one of the fundamental building blocks that determine the signal quality and power consumption in RF transceivers for wireless sensor networks. Ring oscillators are attractive owing to their small form factor and multi-phase capability despite the relatively poor phase noise performance in comparison with LC oscillators. The phase noise of a ring oscillator can be improved by using a coupled structure that works at a lower frequency. This paper introduces a 2.4 GHz low-noise ring oscillator that consists of two 3-stage coupled ring oscillators. Each sub-oscillator operates at 800 MHz, and the multi-phase signals are combined to generate a 2.4 GHz quadrature output. The voltage-controlled ring oscillator designed in a 65-nm standard CMOS technology has a tuning range of 800 MHz and exhibits the phase noise of -104 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. The power consumption is 13.3 mW from a 1.2 V supply voltage.

  • We sputtered $TiN_x$ (titanium nitride) thin films on silicon substrates using ultra high vacuum RF magnetron sputtering method, and measured spectra of ellipsometry angles ${\Delta}$ and ${\Psi}$ in the photon-energy range of 1.5-5.0 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The optical constants, refractive index and extinction coefficient of the $TiN_x$ films were determined via the dispersion parameters extracted from the curve-fitting process based on Drude+Lorentz oscillator dispersion function. The reliability of determined optical constants were verified through the comparison of between simulated reflectance and reflectance spectra measured using a spectrophotometer.

  • This study derives the asymptotic phase noise formula of the oscillators perturbed by the colored noises. Based on the derived formula, this study presents a sub-1V series-tuned differential Colpitts VCO. The ADS simulation result on the phase noise shows that the presented VCO exhibits about 3dBc/Hz lower phase noise at the 1MHz offset frequency from the oscillation frequency of 4.8GHz than the existing series-tuned differential Colpitts VCO with the inductor current sources.

  • This work presents a novel architecture of phase locked loop (PLL) with the current compensating scheme to improve phase noise characteristic. The proposed PLL has two charge pumps (CP), main-CP (MCP) and sub-CP (SCP). The smaller SCP current with same time duration but opposite direction of UP/DN MCP current is injected to the loop filter (LF). It suppresses the voltage fluctuation of LF. The PLL has a novel voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) consisting of a voltage controlled resistor (VCR) and the three-stage ring oscillator with latch type delay cells. The VCR linearly converts voltage into current, and the latch type delay cell has short active on-time of transistors. As a result, it improves phase noise characteristic. The proposed PLL has been fabricated with $0.35{\mu}m$ 3.3 V CMOS process. Measured phase noise at 1 MHz offset is -103 dBc/Hz resulting in 3 dBc/Hz phase noise improvement compared to the conventional PLL.

  • This paper presents the design of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) which is one of the key building blocks in modern wireless communication systems with small VCO gain (Kvco) variation. To compensate conventional large Kvco variation, a series varactor bank has been added to the conventional LC-tank with parallel capacitor bank array. And also, in order to achieve excellent phase noise performance while maintaining wide tuning range, a mixed coarse/fine tuning scheme(series varactor array and parallel capacitor array) is chosen. The switched varactor array bank is controlled by the same digital code for switched capacitor array without additional digital circuits. For use at a low voltage of 1.2V, the proposed current reference circuit in this paper used a current reference circuit for safety with the common gate removed more safely. Implemented in a TSMC 0.13㎛ CMOS RF technology, the proposed VCO can be tuned from 4.4GH to 5.3GHz with the Kvco (VCO gain ) variation of less than 9.6%. While consuming 3.1mA from a 1.2V supply, the VCO has -120dBc/Hz phase noise at 1MHz offset from the carrier of the 5.3 GHz.

  • This study performs the analytical investigation of the oscillation voltages at the tanks of the series tuned varactor incorporating balanced common-drain, and common-gate Colpitts VCO which are able to work even at the sub-1V power supply voltages. The results the investigation predicts is verified by the simulation on the circuit behaviors of the two VCOs. The analytical investigation finds that the series tuned varactor incorporating balanced common-gate VCO generates greater oscillation voltage at the tank than the series tuned varactor incorporating balanced common-drain VCO does, which in turn is more suitable for generating the low phase noise oscillation signal from the sub-1V supply voltage than the series tuned varactor incorporating balanced common-drain VCO.

  • This paper describes a frequency synthesizer designed in a $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS technology for using local oscillators for the IF stages. The design is focused mainly on low-power characteristics. A simple ring-oscillator based VCO is used, where a single control signal can be used for variable resistors. The designed PLL includes all building blocks for elimination of external components, other than the crystal, and its operating frequency can be programmed by external data. It operates in the frequency range of 250MHz to 800MHz and consumes l.08mA at 500MHz from a 2.5V supply. The measured phase noise is -85dBc/Hz in-band and -105dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset. The die area is $1.09mm^2$
