Models and Modeling Behavior: A Look at the Critical Thinking Skills of Biology Majors

  • This paper describes the types of models that biology majors use and how they go about making their models in learning key concepts in biology such as the cell membrane, cytoskeleton and cell structure. Initially, a total of 44 biology students from all year levels enrolled in the second semester of calendar year 2008-2009 were asked to make their respective models of the cell membrane, cytoskeleton and cell structure. They were also asked to answer an open-ended questionnaire. Of the 44, only 20 (five from each year level) were randomly selected for a one-on-one interview. Results showed that the student-generated models from all year levels were mostly analogies, some textbook definitions and occasional drawings. In making their model, students first read the text; second, outline similarities in structure and function or both; and third, make the model. Data suggest that models are good diagnostic tools for identifying critical thinking skills of students. In this case, students mostly demonstrate the ability to recognize similarities in structure and function between the concept and their model. Some senior students demonstrated integration and reflective thinking in making their models. Thus, more opportunities for student-generated models must be available if students were to develop integration and reflective thinking in their models.

Empirical Study of Dynamic Chinese Corporate Governance Based on Chinese-listed Firms with A Panel VAR Approach

  • Purpose - In this article, a dynamic model like a VAR is an appropriate choice for estimating the possible interrelationship between ownership structure and firm performance as a dynamic process. Research design, data, and methodology - Data of this work are collected from Chinese stock exchange including 350 Chinese-listed firms during the period of 1999-2012. We hypothesize that this interrelationship dynamically exists between ownership structure and firm performance. To examine the correlation, a panel Vector Auto-regression (PVAR) approach generated by GMM method is utilized to test the possible dynamic relation embedded in corporate governance. Another two dynamic analysis solutions such as orthogonalized impulse-response function and variance decomposition are also used simultaneously. Results - Findings of this study indicate the evidence that dynamically endogenous relationship exists between ownership structure and firm performance. Further, there is a dynamical correlation between investment and performance. Impulse response and variance decomposition illustrate that impact of a shock to variables themselves is the main source for their variability. Conclusions - The conclusion in this study is that there is a bidirectional and inter-temporal effect between proportion of ownership and corporate performance for a long run in accordance with impulse response function. Overall, our results suggest that corporate governance in China is more market oriented.

기호의 삼분구조에 의한 20세기 여성 패션의 특성 분석 (Charaeteristics of Women′s Fashion in the 20th Century Based on the Threefold Structure of Semiotics)

  • This study purposed to apply function form content, the three concepts that have been discussed by many philosophers since ancient times, to fashion design. Specific research goals are : first, to define fashion design based on the three concepts : and second, to examine how each of the three concepts function-oriented, form-oriented and content-oriented design have been expressed in women's fashion in the $20^{th} century. For these purposes. the author considered Morris' semiotics, which is the theoretical background of the three concepts, reviewed previous researches in design area, and applied the findings to fashion design. According to the result of applying the threefold structure of semiotics. which is the theoretical background of the three concepts, the pragmatic dimension of fashion design comprehends all functional rules related to the use of dress such as body motion and protection, health and safety. air flow and durability, and its syntactic dimension comprehend all the formal elements of visual design such as the structure, shape, line, color and material of dress. The semantic dimension of fashion design includes the symbolic meanings of dress expressed by emotion, sentiment and images. The three dimensions exist interdependently with one another. According to the result of considering the characteristics of the three concepts in the scope of women's fashion in the $20^{th} century. function-oriented design is characterized by practicality and simplicity, and has been expressed as the fashion of functionalism in the 1920s, that of minimalism in the 1960s, and the basic style from 1970s to 1980s, 1990s and the present. Form-oriented design has pursued aestheticism, putting stress upon form, and has been expressed with organic shapes imitating patterns found in nature in the 1950s and with optical art fashion in the 1960s. Content-oriented design attaches importance to transmission of delicate meanings related to the mental world of human beings, and is represented with symbolic forms. Such a characteristic has been expressed in fashion in the early 20th century influenced by surrealism and, with various types of design breaking established forms as well as metaphors and humors that characterize design in the late 20th century.

기능 중심의 신뢰성 예측 모델링 방법론 (A methodology for creating a function-centered reliability prediction model)

  • 본 논문은 시스템에 대한 기능 중심의 신뢰도 예측을 수행하기 위한 모델링 방법론을 제안한다. 신뢰도 예측에 대한 다양한 기존 연구들이 있지만, 이 연구들의 공통점은 하드웨어 중심으로 신뢰도 예측을 수행하였다는 점이다. 신뢰성이 제품이 주어진 사용 조건 아래서 의도하는 기간 동안 정해진 기능을 성공적으로 수행하는 능력이라고 정의되는 점에서 보았을 때, 하드웨어 중심의 신뢰도는 논리적 모순을 가진다. 본 논문에서는 기능 중심의 신뢰도 예측을 위해 4-단계 모델링 절차(four-phase modeling procedure)를 제안하였다. 제안되는 모델링 방법론은 네 개의 모델로 구성된다; 1) 구조적 블록 모델(structure block model), 2) 기능 블록 모델 (function block model), 3) 장치 모델 (device model), 그리고 4) 신뢰성 예측 모델 (reliability prediction model). 본 논문에서는 제안하는 모델링 방법론을 이용하여 전자식 안정기에 대한 기능 중심의 신뢰도 예측을 수행하였으며, 하드웨어의 신뢰도를 결정하기 위해 신뢰도 예측 규격 중 하나인 MIL-HDBK-217F를 이용하였다.

  • In this paper, a reliability-based design optimization method, which enables the determination of optimum design that incorporate confidence range for structures, is studied. Response surface method and Monte Carlo simulation are utilized to determine limit state function. The proposed method is applied to the I-type steel structure for reliability based optimal design.

시각 장애인용 신문 구독 프로그램을 위한 이미지에서 표 구조 인식 (Table Structure Recognition in Images for Newspaper Reader Application for the Blind)

  • Newspaper reader mobile applications using text-to-speech (TTS) function enable blind people to read newspaper contents. But, tables cannot be easily read by the reader program because most of the tables are stored as images in the contents. Even though we try to use OCR (Optical character reader) programs to recognize letters from the table images, it cannot be simply applied to the table reading function because the table structure is unknown to the readers. Therefore, identification of exact location of each table cell that contains the text of the table is required beforehand. In this paper, we propose an efficient image processing algorithm to recognize all the cells in tables by identifying columns and rows in table images. From the cell location data provided by the table column and row identification algorithm, we can generate table structure information and table reading scenarios. Our experimental results with table images found commonly in newspapers show that our cell identification approach has 100% accuracy for simple black and white table images and about 99.7% accuracy for colored and complicated tables.

Dynamic Analysis and Design of Uncertain Systems Against Random Excitation Using probabilistic Method

  • In this paper, a method to obtain the sensitivity of eigenvalues and the random responses of the structure with uncertain parameters is proposed. The concept of the proposed method is that the perturbed equation of each uncertain substructure is obtained using the finite element method, and the perturbed equation of the overall structure is obtained using the mode synthesis method. By this way, the reduced order perturbed equation of the uncertain system can be obtained. And the response of the uncertain system is obtained using probability method. As a numerical example, a simple piping system is considered as an example structure. The damping and spring constants of the support are considered as the uncertain parameters. Then the variations of the eigenvalues, the correlation function and the power spectral density function of the responses are calculated. As a result, the proposed method is considered to be useful technique to analyze the sensitivities of eigenvalues and random response against random excitation in terms of the accuracy and the calculation time.

한국 도시의 규모분포와 도시공간구조 분석 - 광역도시통계권을 중심으로 (Analysis of City Size Distribution and Spatial Structure - with Korean Metroplitan Statistical Areas (MSA))

  • 도시의 성장이 경제발전에 긍정적인 영향을 가져온다는 점에도 불구하고 아직까지 우리나라에서는 도시의 구조를 파악하기 위한 연구가 상당히 미흡한 실정이다. 본고에서는 도시 간 규모의 분포구조와 도시 내 인구밀도함수 등을 통한 내적구조를 새로이 정의한 광역도시통계권을 기준으로 살펴보았다. 먼저, 도시순위규모법칙의 계수분석을 통한 한국의 광역도시통계권 간 인구분포구조를 비교하였다. 한국은 서울광역도시통계권의 규모가 상대적으로 매우 크며 행정구역 상의 인구규모 분포보다 실질적으로 훨씬 집중되어 있다. 이는 서울광역도시통계권이 상대적으로 지나치게 거대하든가 혹은 부산이나 대구, 대전 광역도시통계권의 성장이 상대적으로 뒤떨어진 것으로 해석된다. 한편 지리정보프로그램(Arc GIS)을 이용하여 도시 내의 중심상업지역에서부터의 거리에 따른 인구밀도함수나 부동산가격 등을 통하여 도시의 내적구조를 분석하였다. 표준도시모델(Standard Urban Model)에 따르면 일반적으로 도심에서 외곽으로 갈수록 인구밀도와 부동산 가격이 하락하는 형태를 보이지만 서울광역도시통계권의 외곽에서는 상대적으로 다른 광역도시통계권과는 달리 그 하향곡선이 무척 완만하였고, 이는 결국 도심확산(Urban Sprawl)이 활발히 일어나고 있음을 의미한다. 한편, 울산, 광주권, 그리고 수원-화성-오산권에서 인구분포와 고용분포 간의 공간적 불일치 정도가 큰 편이고 대전권과 인천권에서 작은 편으로 나타났다. 이러한 도시의 구조에 대한 분석은 지역정책의 운용에 있어서 많은 시사점을 줄 수 있다.

MOTIF BASED PROTEIN FUNCTION ANALYSIS USING DATA MINING

  • Proteins are essential agents for controlling, effecting and modulating cellular functions, and proteins with similar sequences have diverged from a common ancestral gene, and have similar structures and functions. Function prediction of unknown proteins remains one of the most challenging problems in bioinformatics. Recently, various computational approaches have been developed for identification of short sequences that are conserved within a family of closely related protein sequence. Protein function is often correlated with highly conserved motifs. Motif is the smallest unit of protein structure and function, and intends to make core part among protein structural and functional components. Therefore, prediction methods using data mining or machine learning have been developed. In this paper, we describe an approach for protein function prediction of motif-based models using data mining. Our work consists of three phrases. We make training and test data set and construct classifier using a training set. Also, through experiments, we evaluate our classifier with other classifiers in point of the accuracy of resulting classification.

스마트 철도 네트워크를 위한 통신 구조 (Communication Structure for Smart Railway Network)

  • 고속화 되고 있는 철도 시스템은 각 구성 요소의 자동화를 넘어 이를 통합한 스마트 철도 네트워크로 진화되고 있다. 이와 같은 스마트 철도 네트워크를 구축하기 위해서는 LTE-R이나 5G-R과 같은 모바일 통신 기술 뿐만 아니라 AI, 빅데이터, 딥러닝과 같은 융복합 정보기술의 활용이 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같이 스마트 철도 네트워크를 위한 철도 통신의 구조를 제안하고자 한다. 본 연구에서 제안하는 스마트 철도 네트워크 통신 구조는 고속철도의 안전 운행, 철도 관리 및 고객 서비스를 포괄하는 구조로 구성되며 필요에 따라 이를 혼합한 기능을 가질 수도 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 스마트 철도 네트워크의 구축과 운영 및 유지 관리, 철도통신 시스템 표준의 개발 등에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.
