  • Adhesive joints are widely used for structural joining applications in various fields and environmental conditions. Polyurethane (PU) and Epoxy adhesives are now being used for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers at cryogenic temperatures. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of epoxy and PU adhesive bonds between Triplex sheets at normal and cryogenic temperatures. The most significant result of this study is that for all adhesives tested, there is a significant decrease in peel strength at cryogenic temperatures. However, the reasons for the decrease in peel strength for epoxy and PU adhesives differ. Consequently, PU adhesives can be considered better suited for use in applications requiring high bonding performance at cryogenic conditions, such as in LNG carriers.

  • An Internet-based software called the Repair Advisory Service (RAS) was developed to assist aircraft composite repair. The RAS takes advantage of the web user interface and provides estimation of the failure loads of repaired composite laminates and Structural Repair Manual (SRM) with search capability. In this paper, a failure model of lap repair is discussed as an example of the modules in the RAS. The model takes into account anisotropy of each ply in the laminate and in the repair ply, and non-elastic behavior of the interlayer between the laminate and the repair patch. Failure loads calculated by the model were compared with test data, and a good agreement was found between the results of the model and the test.

  • FRMLs(Fiber Reinforced Metal Laminates) is a new type of hybrid materials. FRMLs consists of high strength metal and fiber which are laminated using a structural adhesive bond(epoxy resin). The effect of resin mixture ratios on the fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical property of Aramid fiber reinforced aluminum composites was investigated. The epoxy, diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) was cured with methylene dianiline(MDA) with or without accelerator(K-54). Eight kinds of resin mixture ratio were tested for the experiment ; five kinds of FRMLs(1))epoxy & curing agent) and three kinds of FRMLs(2)(epoxy & curing agent & accelerator). FRMLs(2) have a more effective characteristics on the fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical property than FRMLs(1)

  • A study of vehicle weight lightening has been progressed to reduce the fuel consumption. In this paper, the body floor in an EV (Electric Vehicle) bus has been applied by composites as CFRP and GFRP. In order to analyse a various reliability and safety, an experiment and FEM analysis was carried out to obtain weight lightening. Especially, the joint. An effective design is obtained through an experiment as well as FEM analysis. Results of stress analysis of GFRP material showed twice as much displacement than those of CFRP material. Among three kinds of joint methods, the bond joint method is occurred to a substantial shape change in the body and floor. It is found that the rivet joints are fairly suitable for stress sustaining capability.

  • Recently, interest in multifunctional energetic structural materials (MESMs) has grown due to their multifunctional potential, especially in military applications. However, there are few studies about extrinsic factors that govern the reactivity of MESMs. In this paper, a shock compaction process was performed on the nano Ni/Al-mixed powder to investigate the effect of particle size on the shock reaction condition. Additionally, heating the statically compacted specimen was also performed to compare the mechanical properties and microstructure between reacted and unreacted material. The results show that the agglomerated structure of nanopowders interrupts the reaction by reducing the elemental boundary. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the NiAl and $Ni_3Al$ intermetallics are formed on the reacted specimen. The microhardness results show that the $Ni_3Al$ phase has a higher hardness than NiAl, but the portion of $Ni_3Al$ in the reacted specimen is minor. In conclusion, using Ni/Al composites as a reactive material should focus on energetic use.

  • Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are known as intelligent methods for modeling the behavior of physical phenomena because of it is a soft computing technique and takes data samples rather than entire data sets to arrive at solutions, which saves both time and money. ANN is successfully used in the civil engineering applications which are suitable examining the complicated relations between variables. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are advanced composites that successfully used in various engineering design. The FGMs are nonhomogeneous materials and made of two different type of materials. In the present study, the bending analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) beams presents on theoretical based on combination of mixed-finite element method, Gâteaux differential and Timoshenko beam theory. The main idea in this study is to build a model using ANN with four parameters that are: Young's modulus ratio (Et/Eb), a shear correction factor (ks), power-law exponent (n) and length to thickness ratio (L/h). The output data is the maximum displacement (w). In the experiments: 252 different data are used. The proposed ANN model is evaluated by the correlation of the coefficient (R), MAE and MSE statistical methods. The ANN model is very good and the maximum displacement can be predicted in ANN without attempting any experiments.

  • The native extracellular matrix (ECM) consists of an integrated fibrous protein network and proteoglycan-based ground (hydrogel) substance. We designed a novel electrospinning technique to engineer a three dimensional fiber-hydrogel composite that mimics the native ECM structure, is injectable, and has practical macroscale dimensions for clinically relevant tissue defects. In a model system of articular cartilage tissue engineering, the fiber-hydrogel composites enhanced the biological response of adult stem cells, with dynamic mechanical stimulation resulting in near native levels of extracellular matrix. This technology platform was expanded through structural and biochemical modification of the fibers including hydrophilic fibers containing chondroitin sulfate, a significant component of endogenous tissues, and hydrophobic fibers containing ECM microparticles.

  • To reduce structural weight, light metals, including aluminum and magnesium alloys, have been widely used in various industries such as aircraft, transportation and automobiles. Recently, composite materials such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) and Graphite Epoxy Composite Material (GECM) have also been applied. However, aluminum and its alloys suffer corrosion from various factors, which include aggressive ions, pH, solution temperature and galvanic contact by potential difference. Moreover, carbon fiber in CFRP and GECM is a very efficient cathode, and very noble in the galvanic series. Galvanic contact between carbon fiber composites and metals in electrolytes such as rain or seawater, is highly undesirable. Notwithstanding the potentially dangerous effects of chloride and temperature, there is little research on galvanic corrosion according to chloride concentration and temperature. This work focused on the effects of chloride concentration and solution temperature on AA7075T6. The increased galvanic corrosion between CRFP and AA7075T6 was evaluated by electrochemical experiments, and these effects were elucidated.

  • $MoS_2$ precursors were synthesized by reacting thioacetamide ($C_2H_5NS$) with sodium molybdate dihydrate ($Na_2MoO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) in aqueous HCl solution. $MoS_2$ nanoparticles were prepared from dried $MoS_2$ precursors by calcination in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an inert argon atmosphere. $MoS_2-C_{60}$ nanocomposites were obtained by heating $MoS_2$ nanoparticles and fullerene ($C_{60}$) together in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Their morphological and the structural properties were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The $MoS_2$ nanoparticles and $MoS_2-C_{60}$ nanocomposites were used as catalysts in the reductions of 2-, 3-, and 4-nitrophenol in the presence of sodium borohydride. The photocatalytic activities of the $MoS_2$ nanoparticles and $MoS_2-C_{60}$ nanocomposites were evaluated in the degradation of organic dyes (brilliant green, methylene blue, methyl orange, and rhodamine B) under ultraviolet light (254 nm).

  • It is a primary object of the present study to test and evaluate the shear load carrying capability of a carbon fiber reinforced thermoses composite structure with buttress grooves for military applications. The buttress form of groove is an effective structure in any applications where high shear loads are transferred in one direction between structural components. Inverse ballistics methodology was introduced to investigate the high strain rate properties of composite groove specimens. In comparison with the conventional methods, inverse ballistics technique is a proper one under dynamic environment.
