  • This paper proposes a new stroke extraction algorithm for phoneme segmentation, which is one of main techniques for off-line handwritten Hangul recognition. The proposed algorithm extracts vertical, slant, and horizontal strokes from phonemes using run-length. The run-length of vertical or slant strokes becomes the width, and also the number of horizontal run-lengths the width. After extracting horizontal strokes from phonemes, the algorithm links two continuous vertical or slant stokes with run-lengths of the strokes' width to represent the features of a character. The extracted strokes can be utilized to recognize a character, using template matching of strokes, which is being adopted in on-line handwritten Hangul recognition.

  • This paper proposes a new feature extraction method which is effectively used in character recognition, and validate the effectiveness through various computational methods for similiarity degree. To get feature vectors used in this method, Hough transform is applied to character image, which is used for edge extraction in image processing. By that transformation technique, strokes could be extracted and feature vectors constructed suitably. The characteristic of this method is solving the difficulties in stroke extraction through transform space analysis, which is induced by noise and blurring, and representing high recognition rate 99.3% within 10 candidates in relative low dimension.

  • Handwritten character recognition is classified into on-line handwritten character recognition and off-line handwritten character recognition. On-line handwritten character recognition has made a remarkable outcome compared to off-line hacdwritten character recognition. This method can acquire the dynamic written information such as the writing order and the position of a stroke by means of pen-based electronic input device such as a tablet board. On the contrary, Any dynamic information can not be acquired in off-line handwritten character recognition since there are extreme overlapping between consonants and vowels, and heavily noisy images between strokes, which change the recognition performance with the result of the preprocessing. This paper proposes a method that effectively extracts the stroke including dynamic information of characters for off-line Korean handwritten character recognition. First of all, this method makes improvement and binarization of input handwritten character image as preprocessing procedure using watershed algorithm. The next procedure is extraction of skeleton by using the transformed Lu and Wang's thinning: algorithm, and segment pixel array is extracted by abstracting the feature point of the characters. Then, the vectorization is executed with a maximum permission error method. In the case that a few strokes are bound in a segment, a segment pixel array is divided with two or more segment vectors. In order to reconstruct the extracted segment vector with a complete stroke, the directional component of the vector is mortified by using right-hand writing coordinate system. With combination of segment vectors which are adjacent and can be combined, the reconstruction of complete stroke is made out which is suitable for character recognition. As experimentation, it is verified that the proposed method is suitable for handwritten Korean character recognition.

  • This study was designed to investigate effectiveness of korean medicine therapy and the relation between effectiveness of that and single nucleotide gene polymorphism in stroke patients. This study was carried out on 92 stroke patients who were admitted to the department of acupuncture & moxibustion, college of Oriental medicine, Daegu Haany University and 112 healthy Korean. All patients were received Korean medicine therapy including acupuncture and herbal medicine for stroke and assessed by National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS). Blood samples from all subjects were obtained for DNA extraction. The extracted DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction(PCR). PCR products were visualized by 1.5% agarose gel electrophoresis. Through Pyrosequencing of PCR product, the polymorphism of single nucleotide gene was genotyped automatically. There were significant difference between before and after Korean medicine therapy in NIHSS. Genotypes were AA, AG, GG, but there was no significant difference between control and stroke groups. And there was not any statistical significant allelic frequency difference between control and stroke groups. We concluded that Korean medicine therapy in stroke patient can improve NIHSS, but there is no definite relation between effectiveness of Korean medicine therapy and single nucleotide gene polymorphism in stroke patients. This study need to be confirmed in large patients and further studies about relation with gene polymorphism are required.

  • In this paper, the stroke-based text extraction algorithm for digital video is proposed. The proposed algorithm consists of four stages such as text detection, text localization, text segmentation and geometric verification. The text detection stage ascertains that a given frame in a video sequence contains text. This procedure is accomplished by morphological operations for the pixels with higher possibility of being stroke-based text, which is called as seed points. For the text localization stage, morphological operations for the edges including seed points ate adopted followed by horizontal and vortical projections. Text segmentation stage is to classify projected areas into text and background regions according to their intensity distribution. Finally, in the geometric verification stage, the segmented area are verified by using prior knowledge of video text characteristics.

  • This paper describes a met hod of the extraction of phonemes in Hangout recognition. We provide the direction of strokes aid positional information for analyzing the structure of characters based on the regular combinational rules of Hangout according to Top -Down processing, and show the process of Phoneme extraction seq uencially. In this paper, some processing algorithms are described and simulated. The experiment of the phoneme extraction is carried out for 677 characters actully used daily, and extraction rate of 96% is obtained. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Objectives : In this study, we investigated the SNP (single-nucleotide polymorphism) of IL10 in patients with stroke. The present study was undertaken to see if specific genotypic and allelic variations are associated with stroke in the Korean population. Methods : Blood samples from all subjects were obtained for DNA extraction and collected in EDTA tube. Genomic DNA was extracted using DNA isolation kit for Mammalian Blood (Boehringer Mannheim, IN, USA). The extracted DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Pyrosequencing was performed according to manufacturer's standard protocol. Results : There was no statistically significant genotypic distribution difference between control and stroke group. The frequencies of A/A homozygotes and A/C heterozygotes among control subjects were 91 (87.5%) and 13 (12.5%). The frequencies of A/A and A/C among the stroke patients were 85 (89.5%) and 10 (10.5%). There was not statistically significant allelic frequency difference between control and stroke group. The allelic frequency of A and C was 195 (93.8%) and 13 (6.2%) among the control subjects and 180 (94.7%) and 10 (5.3%) in stroke patients, respectively. Conclusion : The cytokine IL10 may not be pathogenetic factors in stroke. But further studies including different cytokine gene can be a useful for predicting stroke. Establishment of more systemic approach and high quality of prospective cohorts will be necessary for the good prediction of genetic markers.

  • This paper describes a feature extraction process by using a multi-layer neural network and is applied to the Korean stroke pattern for on line hand written character recognition, In the first layer the features are detected during the writing process and in the second layer the stroke specific features are extracted. A modified Masking field algorithm for direction co9nstancy has been used in this neural network and the resulting action potential of stroke specific features represents statistical distribution of the features in the on-line input stroke pattern and these results can be used in the recognition of on-line hand written Korean characters successfully.

  • We introduce a new method of painterly rendering. Instead of using the gradient direction of the source image to generate a brush stroke, we extract regions that can be drawn in one stroke using MHN filtering followed by identification of connected components, and make a brush stroke from each, based on an approximation to the medial axis. This method results in realistic-looking brush strokes of varying width that have an irregular directions where necessary.

  • This paper proposes a algorithm of phonemes extraction in korean character pattern recognition. The phonemes are classified into the patterns which are separable and connected with each other. The former is extracted by means of pattern matching in consideration of topological structure of ponemes and direction of stroke sequentially. The latter is extracted by means of index and window algorithm which are performed by a 3$\times$3 sequential local operation in the thinned character pattern.
