  • Fatigue crack in most rails take place by rolling contact between wheel and rail in railway industry. Therefore, it is critical to understand the rolling contact phenomena, especially for the three-dimensional situation. In this paper the steady-state rolling contact problem of KTX wheel and rail (UIC60) has been studied with three-dimensional finite element analysis. The variation of contact pressure and contact stresses on rolling contact surface were obtained using the finite element method. The three-dimensional distribution of contact stresses on the contact surface are investigated. Results show that the distribution of shear stress and contact stress (von Mises) on the contact surface varies rapidly as a result of the variation of stick-slip region. The contact stress at the leading edge is greater than at the trailing edge because of stick and slip phenomena.

  • The present study is carried out in order to investigate the effect of the periodic acceleration in the stenosed and bifurcated blood vessels. The blood flow and wall shear stress are changed under body movement or acceleration variation. Numerical studies are performed for various periodic acceleration phase angles, bifurcation angles and section area ratios of inlet and outlet. It is found that blood flow and wall shear stress are changed about ${\pm}20%$ and ${\pm}24%$ as acceleration phase angle variation with the same periodic frequency. also wall shear stress and blood flow rate are decreased as bifurcation angle increased.

  • The applications of fracture mechanics have traditionally concentrated on cracks loaded by tensile stresses, and growing under an opening or mode I mechanism. However, many cases of failures occur from growth of cracks subjected to mixed mode loading. Several criteria have been proposed regarding the crack growth direction under mixed mode loadings. This paper is aimed at investigation of fatigue crack growth behaviour under mixed mode(I+II) with variation of angle and pre-crack length in two dimensional branched type precrack. Especially the direction of fatigue crack propagation was predicted and effective stress intensity factor was calculated by finite element analysis(FEA. In this paper, the maximum tangential stress(MTS) criterion was used to predict crack growth direction. Not only experiment but also finite element analysis was carried out and the theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results.

  • It is well known that natural frequencies increase when a cantilever beam rotates about the axis perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. Such phenomena that are caused by centrifugal inertia forces are often referred to as the stiffening effects. Occasionally it is necessary to control the variation of a natural frequency or the maximum stress of a rotating beam. By changing the thickness of the rotating beam, the modal or the stress characteristics can be changed. The thickness of the rotating beam is assumed to be a cubic spline function in the present work. An optimization method is employed to find the optimal thickness shape of the rotating beam. This method can be utilized for the design of rotating structures such as turbine blades and aircraft rotary wings.

  • Most existing studies for stress analysis of teeth have employed small number of teeth, and used big element size using F-E models. Therefore, the results are not accuracy enough for showing the internal stress variation. 15 males' and 13 females' mandibular first premolar are employed for internal structure's study of teeth and small element size for a FE model are used. According to these processes, stress distribution of internal parts of teeth are well shown, and the stresses are varied a lot between enamel layer and dentine layer, but there is little variation on pulp chamber.

  • This paper suggested the method determing the stress intensity factor (SIF) for functionally gradient materials (FGMs) by photo elastic experimental method. The SIF for the center crack in a finite rectangulat plate with a linear variation of shear modulus with constant density and Poisson's ratio along the direction of the crack under mode I static loading is obtained. The exponential and linear variation of stress fields are used for obtaining the SIF. The greater crack length, the increaser the difference of the SIF between right and left side crack tip.

  • The stress corrosion crack growth is simulated assuming a small axial surface crack inside a S/G tube. Internal pressure and residual stresses are considered as applied forces. Stress intensity factors along crack front, variation of crack shape and crack growth rate are obtained and discussed. It is noted that the aspect ratio of the crack is not depend on the initial crack shape but depend on the residual stress distribution.

  • Pre-drainage of groundwater in the roof aquifer by boreholes is the main method for prevention of roof water disaster, and the drop in the water level during the drainage leads to the variation of the local stress in the overlying strata. Based on a multitude of boreholes for groundwater drainage from aquifer above the 1303 mining face of Longyun Coal Mine, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are used to investigate the local stress variation in the process of borehole drainage. The results show that due to the drop in the water level of the roof aquifer during the drainage, the stress around the borehole gradually evolved. From the center of the borehole to the outside, a stress-relaxed zone, a stress-elevated zone, and a stress-recovered zone are sequentially formed. Along with the expansion of drainage influence, the stress peak in the stress-elevated zone also moves to the outside. When the radius of influence develops to the maximum, the stress peak position no longer moves outward. When the coal mining face advances to the drainage influence range, the abutment pressure in front of the mining face is superimposed with the high local stress around the borehole, which increases the risk of stress concentration. The present study provides a reference for the stress concentration caused by borehole drainage, which can be potentially utilized in the optimal arrangement of drainage boreholes in underground mining.

  • It has been reported that the failure phenomenon and variation of electrical characteristic due to the effect of electrostatic discharge(ESD) in silicon devices. But we had fess reports about the phenomenon due to the ESD in the compound semiconductors. So there are a lot of difficulty to the phenomenon analysis and to select the protection method of main circuits or the devices. It has not been reported that the relation between the ESD stress and GaN devices, which is remarkable to apply the operation in high temperature and high voltage due to the superior material characteristic. We studied that the characteristic variation of the AlGaN/GaN HEMT current, the leakage current, the transconductance(gm) and the failure phenomenon of device due to the ESD stress. We have applied the ESD stress by transmission line pulse(TLP) method, which is widely used in ESD stress experiments, and observed the variation of the electrical characteristic before and after applying the ESD stress. The on-current trended to increase after applying the ESD stress. The leakage current and transconductance were changed slightly. The failure point of device was mainly located in middle and edge sides of the gate, was considered the increase of temperature due to a leakage current. The GaN devices have poor thermal characteristic due to usage of the sapphire substrate, so it have been shown to easily fail at low voltage compared to the conventional GaAs devices.

  • Design parameters which used to analyze the stress distribution on the tank wall were defined to develop the propellant tank and obtain optimal values. 1/4 modeling of total tank was selected to calculate the stress distribution with respect to the variation of the support lug location and the tank wall thickness and 1/2 modeling was selected for the stress distributions with respect to the variation of fuel outlet location. Actually, 350psi was applied as static load and 12 gravity as a dynamic load during launching on the internal tank wall. The structural analysis was done with respect to attaching condition of the tank in the satellite. Also the effect of the variation of the propellant outlet location from $0^{\cire}$ to $25^{\cire}$ on the stress distribution was investigated. The equivalent stress distribution and optimal parameters induced from analysis results of the each condition will be used as the fundamental data to design the propellant tank.
