The basal ganglia network has been implicated in the control of adaptive behavior, possibly by integrating motor learning and motivational processes. Both positive and negative reinforcement appear to shape our behavioral adaptation by modulating the function of the basal ganglia. Here, we examined a transgenic mouse line (G2CT) in which synaptic transmissions onto the medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the basal ganglia are depressed. We found that the level of collaterals from direct pathway MSNs in the external segment of the globus pallidus (GPe) ('bridging collaterals') was decreased in these mice, and this was accompanied by behavioral inhibition under stress. Furthermore, additional manipulations that could further decrease or restore the level of the bridging collaterals resulted in an increase in behavioral inhibition or active behavior in the G2CT mice, respectively. Collectively, our data indicate that the striatum of the basal ganglia network integrates negative emotions and controls appropriate coping responses in which the bridging collateral connections in the GPe play a critical regulatory role.
Previously, we demonstrated that the shift and/or restriction of feeding time during relatively short-term period (4 weeks) could alter the pituitary gonadotropin expression and the weights of seminal vesicle and prostate in rats. We also found that the reverse feeding (RF) schedule (up to 8 weeks) might induce an adaptable metabolic stress and cause impairment of androgen-dependent reproductive tissues. In the present study, we extended the RF time regimen up to 12 weeks, and measured the reproductive tissue weights. After 4 and 8 weeks of RF, the weights of epididymis were not significantly different. After 12 weeks, however, epididymis weights of RF animals were significantly different (CON 12W : RF 12W = $48.26{\pm}0.62mg$ : $44.05{\pm}1.57mg$, p<0.05). After 4 and 12 weeks of feeding, seminal vesicle weights of RF animals were significantly decreased (CON 4W : RF 4W = $79.36{\pm}8.34mg$ : $46.28{\pm}2.43mg$, p<0.001; CON 12W : RF 12W = $72.04{\pm}3.76mg$ : $46.71{\pm}2.27mg$, p<0.001, respectively). Prostate weights were not changed by RF. Kidney and spleen weights of RF animals were significantly different on weeks 4 and 12 (Kidney, CON 4W : RF 4W = $249.72{\pm}4.20mg$ : $228.41{\pm}3.03mg$, p<0.001; CON 12W : RF 12W = $309.15{\pm}7.49mg$ : $250.72{\pm}6.13mg$, p<0.001, respectively, Spleen, CON 4W : RF 4W = $111.26{\pm}3.76mg$ : $96.88{\pm}4.69mg$, p<0.05; CON 12W : RF 12W = $123.93{\pm}10.72mg$ : $94.68{\pm}5.65mg$, p<0.05, respectively). Histology analysis of seminal vesicle revealed that the thinner epithelial cell layers, reduced complexities of swollen papilla folding in the exocrine glands on weeks 4 and 12 of RF. There was no histological difference between control and RF group on week 8. The present study indicates that up to 12 weeks RF induced differential changes in tissue weights of male mice. In particular, seminal vesicle, kidney and spleen seemed to temporarily adapted to the RF-induced metabolic stress on week 8 of feeding schedule. These results confirmed the our previous study that the RF might induce an adaptable metabolic stress and cause impairment of androgen-dependent reproductive tissues such as epididymis and seminal vesicle as well as non-reproductive tissues such as kidney and spleen. Further studies will be needed to achieve a better understanding of the how does mealtime shift affect the reproductive function and exact nature of adaptation.

The low and unstable yield of soybean has been a major problem in Japan. Excess soil moisture conditions are one of the major factors to restrict soybean productivity. More than 80 % of soybean crops are cultivated in converted paddy fields which often have poor drainage. In central and eastern regions of Japan, the early vegetative growth of soybean tends to be restricted by the flooding damage because the early growth period is overlapped with the rainy season. Field observation shows that induced excess water stress in early vegetative stage reduces dry matter production by decreasing intercepted radiation by leaf and radiation use efficiency (RUE) (Bajgain et al., 2015). Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the responses of soybean growth for excess water conditions to assess these effects on soybean productions. In this study, we aim to modify the soybean crop model (Sinclair et al., 2003) by adding the components of the restriction of leaf area development and RUE for adaptable to excess water conditions. This model was consist of five components, phenological model, leaf area development model, dry matter production model, plant nitrogen model and soil water balance model. The model structures and parameters were estimated from the data obtained from the field experiment in Tsukuba. The excess water effects on the leaf area development were modeled with consideration of decrease of blanch emergence and individual leaf expansion as a function of temperature and ground water level from pot experiments. The nitrogen fixation and nitrogen absorption from soil were assumed to be inhibited by excess water stress and the RUE was assumed to be decreasing according to the decline of leaf nitrogen concentration. The results of the modified model were better agreement with the field observations of the induced excess water stress in paddy field. By coupling the crop model and the ground water level model, it may be possible to assess the impact of excess water conditions for soybean production quantitatively.
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are induced in response to various physiological or environmental stressors. However, the transcriptional activation of HSPs is regulated by a family of heat shock factors (HSFs). Fish models provide an ideal system for examining the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of adaptation to various temperatures and water environments. In this study, we examined the pattern differentials of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) and expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in response to thermal stress in goldfish and mouse hepatocyte cultures by immune-blot analysis. Goldfish HSF1 (gfHSF1) changed from a monomer to a trimer at $33^{\circ}C$ and showed slightly at $37^{\circ}C$, whereas mouse HSF1 (mHSF1) did so at $42^{\circ}C$. This experiment showed similar results to a previous study, indicating that gfHSF1 and mHSF1 play different temperature in the stress response. We also examined the activation conditions of the purified recombinant proteins in human HSF1 (hmHSF1) and gfHSF1 using CD spectroscopy and immune-blot analysis. The purified recombinant HSF1s were treated from $25^{\circ}C$ to $42^{\circ}C$. Structural changes were observed in hmHSF1 and gfHSF1 according to the heat-treatment conditions. These results revealed that both mammal HSF1 (human and mouse HSF1) and fish HSF1 exhibited temperature-dependent changes; however, their optimal activation temperatures differed.
Free radicals have long been considered damaging to various tissues. An excessive amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is known to have detrimental effects on the body and to be linked to numerous pathological conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and skeletal muscle atrophy. On the other hand, recent findings suggest that ROS is important for maintenance and development of cellular activity. Cells respond to increased oxidative stress by adaptive changes in the expression of a variety of proteins involved in the maintenance of cellular integrity. ROS is also essential for skeletal muscle function and metabolism. It is well known that physical exercise has many health benefits. Paradoxically, physical exercise also stimulates the production of ROS, which result in oxidative stress. Based on evidence amassed in the past decade, exercise itself may be considered an antioxidant because training increases the expression of antioxidant enzymes. In this review, we discuss the processes underlying the generation of ROS and its role in exercise-induced adaptation based on recent evidence. Furthermore, we discuss the possible role of NADPH oxidase in exercise-induced activation of insulin signaling and its effect on longevity.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate whether the extract of Coptidis Rhizoma inhibits inflammation in chronic cold stress (CCS)-exposed mice or not. Methods : Coptidis Rhizoma extract (CRE) was made by reflux with distilled water. Male ICR mice (7 weeks old) were divided randomly into 5 groups: (1) control, (2) CCS, (3) CCS+CRE 100 mg/kg, (4) CCS+CRE 300 mg/kg, (5) CCS+CRE 1,000 mg/kg groups. Mice were orally administered once a day for 14 days starting from 1 day before CCS. Group (2)-(5) were exposed to CCS conditions that maintained at $4^{\circ}C$ for 2 h once a day for 14 days. The levels of serum cortisol and hypothalamic prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and PGE2 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The expression levels of several pro-inflammatory factors like heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), c-fos, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kB) were measured by western blot analysis in mouse hypothalamus. Results : Oral administration of CRE 1,000 mg/kg significantly suppressed the increase of serum cortisol levels in mice exposed to CCS. CCS-exposed mice had significantly increased the expression of HSP70, c-fos, and NF-kB in hypothalamus, while CRE treatment significantly attenuated the elevation of these pro-inflammatory factors. The ratio of PGE2/PGE1 was also higher in CCS-exposed mice than control group. CRE treatment significantly reduced the increase of PGE2/PGE1 ratio induced by CCS. Conclusion : These findings suggest that Coptidis Rhizoma may work as a potential agent to modulate inflammatory responses under the condition of cold adaptation formed by CCS.
The occupational socialization process of security and secretary service goes through four stages of preparation, adaptation, conflicts, and maturity and dynamic and incessant changes. The preparation stage includes the preparation to become a security and secretary service, the importance of what to prepare, usefulness of college education, required courses, and certificates. The adaptation stage includes the percentage of bodyguard and secretary, systematic nature of work, stagnation of the job, abilities required for a security and secretary service, elements to work on, job satisfaction, information sources, professionalism of the job, and future of the job. In the conflicts stage includes conflicts at work, difficulty of security and secretary service, problem-solving efforts, advice and consultation, satisfaction with workload, job stress, perceptions of others for security and secretary service, experience of trying to get another job, and supplements. And the maturity stage includes the changes to the roles and capabilities of a security and secretary service, autonomy of business management, degree of others' recognition of one's abilities, methods to evaluate job performance, salary, social status and pride, and efforts for self-development.
The purposes of this study are to investigate various experience factors of the court security team's occupational socialization process and suggest basic materials which are necessary to establish educational service strategies of preliminary court security and guard. Therefore, in-depth interview and ethnographic study were conducted for 4 court securities whose career is more than 3 years. As the result, the process of occupational socialization process of the court security was divided into preparation period, adaptation period, conflict period and maturity period. In the preparation period, vision of university departments, acquisition of certificates and information of the court security team are the factors of basic stage for becoming court securities. In the adaptation period, they adapt themselves for playing their own roles sincerely and become professional manpower after being court securities, through the university educational program useful for practical duties, certificates for practical duties and occupational satisfaction. In the conflict period, they aware conflicts of the company and job stress, that court securities should experience, and endure them. In the maturity period, they are grown by one more step as court securities, through the motivation, job professionalism, occupational prospect and efforts of self-development.
In many geological fields, including hydrogeology, it is of great importance to determine the heterogeneity of the subsurface media. This study briefly introduces the concept and theory of the method that can estimate the hydraulic properties of the media constituting the aquifer, which was recently introduced by Park (2020). After the introduction, the method was applied to the synthetic aquifer to demonstrate the practicality, from which various implications were drawn. The introduced technique uses a global optimization technique called the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES). Conceptually, it is a methodology to characterize the aquifer heterogeneity by assimilating the groundwater level time-series data due to the imposed hydraulic stress. As a result of applying the developed technique to estimate the hydraulic conductivity of a hypothetical aquifer, it was confirmed that a total of 40000 unknown values were estimated in an affordable computational time. In addition, the results of the estimates showed a close numerical and structural similarity to the reference hydraulic conductivity field, confirming that the quality of the estimation by the proposed method is high. In this study, the developed method was applied to a limited case, but it is expected that it can be applied to a wider variety of cases through additional development of the method. The development technique has the potential to be applied not only to the field of hydrogeology, but also to various fields of geology and geophysics. Further development of the method is currently underway.
In this study, it is necessary to supplement the Korean language curriculum in order for international students to adapt and settle in Korea in an era where education is being transformed into future education due to the 4th industry. In the KFL (Korean as a Foreign Language) situation encountered by international students, they suffer from difficulties in university mathematics due to communication problems due to lack of language ability, which is one of the stress factors for cultural adaptation in the Korean language education program. To solve this problem, we analyzed ESL programs in English-speaking countries and KSL programs in Korea to set educational goals, curriculum, and educational methods to achieve goals for international students, and to establish curriculum and learning processes. Therefore, the Korean language education program (KSL program) for foreign students in the Korean language curriculum should also be supplemented by accepting the advantages of setting accurate goals for the ESL program and linking it with university graduation in the curriculum of English-speaking countries. In addition, for international students to learn Korean, an integrated Korean language education course and management system using IT suitable for the 4th industrial age is needed.
