  • The effect of varied light intensities on the growth of daughter plants during propagation and after transplant to raised beds were examined in 'Sulhyang' strawberry. To this end, four treatments in controlling solar radiation inside a plastic house were made: 55% retractable shading and 35, 55, and 75% fixed shading. The plastic house was shaded only from 11:00 to 16:00 in June and 10:00 to 16:00 in July to September for the treatment of 55% retractable shading. The mean solar radiation inside the plastic house in the retractable 55% shading treatment was 317 W·m-2 and those in the 35, 55, and 75% fixed shading treatments were 183, 165, and 116 W·m-2, respectively, at 10 o'clock in the morning. The 55% and 75% fixed shading resulted in taller daughter plants with wider leaf areas than 55% retractable shading. The retractable shading also showed higher leaf numbers, crown diameters, root weights, and fresh weights compared to fixed shading treatments. Regarding the inorganic element contents, daughter plants grown under 75% fixed shading had 1.35% total nitrogen content followed by 1.19% in 35% fixed shading, 1.14% in 55% fixed shading, 1.14% in open culture, and 1.10% in 55% fixed shading. After 54 days following the transplant of daughter plants to a raised bed, the fresh weight of the aboveground part was the heaviest in the 55% retractable shading and non-shading treatments. The 75% fixed shading treatment had the lowest fresh weight of the aboveground plant parts. The results of this study could be used for the production of high-quality daughter strawberry plants.

  • In this study, we investigated effect of washing with brine on quality characteristics of strawberries during storage at 4 or $20^{\circ}C$. The strawberry samples were prepared with brine-washing (BW), brine-washing and removing moisture on surface (BWR), or without brine-washing and removing moisture (control). The samples were tested for total aerobic bacteria, pH, color, firmness. BWR affected the microbial change, resulting in retarding the growth of total aerobic bacteria, compared with the control and BW. The initial microbial and exponential growth phase of BWR at $4^{\circ}C$ was not detected. For pH, there wasn't dramatical change on BWR at $4^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. In addition, there was dramatically in decreased on control and BW. A-value was increased over storage time on control and BWR except BW. For firmness, there wasn't dramatical change on all sample when stored at $4^{\circ}C$. The results suggest that storage of strawberry stored after washing and moisture removal from the surface should be applied to maintain quality and shelf-life during storage of strawberries.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of eight everbearing strawberry cultivars and the effect of precooling treatment to maintain the quality during storage and shelf life of 'Charlotte'. Several quality parameters including firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), color, soluble sugars, and organic acids were evaluated. For Successful marketing everbearing strawberries required more than 1 N of firmness and $6^{\circ}Brix$ of SSC, respectively. 'Albion', 'Charlotte', and 'Goha' cultivars were higher in fruit SSC and 'Charlotte' cultivar was higher in fruit firmness among eight cultivars examined in this study. Fruit had more bright red color in 'Charlotte', 'Flamingo', 'GW-4', and 'San Andreas', which may reflect the consumer acceptance. Physicochemical characteristics of 'Charlotte' strawberry after with/without room precooling treatment were evaluated during storage at $4^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$ and additional 3 days at $25^{\circ}C$ for shelf-life. Weight loss increased about 8% in the fruits stored at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 days, while in low temperature storage was about 2% for 7 days showing precooling was more effect on during shelf life periods rather than storage periods. Decay was not found during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ regardless of precooling treatment, but fungal growth was found in all the treatments after transferred to room temperature. Precooling treatment did not affect fruit color in shelf life period. For advanced marketing, everbearing strawberry should maintain in low temperature less than $4^{\circ}C$ to sustain quality, but the room precooling showed less significant effect to maintain quality on 'Charlotte' cultivar.

  • In this study, the effect of crown heating on the cultivation environment, budding, flowering and yields of strawberry was analyzed. In December, January, and February, when the outside temperature was low, the average strawberry crown temperature at daytime in the test zone was 1.3℃ higher than that in the control zone, and the average strawberry crown temperature at nighttime in the test zone was 2.7℃ higher than that in the control zone. The average bed temperature at daytime in test zone was 1.7℃ higher than that in the control zone, and the average bed temperature at nighttime in test zone was 2.4℃ higher than that in the control zone. As a result of performing correlation analysis and regression analysis on strawberry crown temperature and budding period, the correlation coefficient was -0.86, which tended to be shorter as the crown temperature was higher, and the determination coefficient was 0.74. The total yields of strawberry during test period were 392.6 g/plant for test greenhouse and 346.0 g/plant for control greenhouse respectively. As for the quality of strawberries, the ratio of 2L (very large) grades and L (large) grades was 62.4% in the test greenhouse and 58.5% in the control greenhouse, indicating that the proportion of high quality strawberries was higher in the test greenhouse.

  • To prolong the shelf-life of strawberry, samples were treated with gel packs containing slow-released chlorine dioxide($ClO_2$) gas at 3~7 ppm for 6 days at room temperature. The weight loss and decay ratio as well as changes in pH, color and texture properties of the treated samples were investigated. The weight of the control and $ClO_2$ gas treated samples decreased slightly, but the weight of the control changed faster than those of the $ClO_2$ gas treated samples during the storage period. The decay ratio of control was higher than those of the $ClO_2$ gas treatments since 4 days of storage. The pH and acidity in the control and in the $ClO_2$ gas treated samples were no differences during storage period. The lightness of strawberry decreased during storage, but there was no difference in lightness among the treatments even when storage time was extended. The redness and yellowness of the control showed higher change than those of the $ClO_2$ gas treatments during 6 days. The firmness of the control changed more rapidly than those of the $ClO_2$ gas treatments during 6 days. Especially, the samples treated 3 and 5 ppm $ClO_2$ gas were the least changed. And the scores for appearance, firmness and overall acceptance control and 7 ppm $ClO_2$ gas treatment decreased more rapidly than those of 3 and 5 ppm treatment.

  • The objective of this study was to find out the optimum number of fruiting per a flower cluster on 5 domestic strawberry cultivars (Fragaria${\times}$ananassa Duch.), 'Daewang', 'Ssanta', 'Okmae', 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang'. Therefore, three ways of fruit thinning, 4~5 fruiting, 7~9 fruiting and all fruiting per a flower cluster were compared. After fruit thinning, the first fruit weights were increased from the second flower cluster on 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang', but from the third one on 'Daewang' and 'Ssanta'. There was no difference in first fruit weight by the flower thinning ways on 'Okmae'. The mean fruit weights of all the cultivars were increased and sugar contents also were increased, but acidities were decreased. The peduncle lengths were shortened by fruit thinning, but there was no difference in number of leaf, petiole length and crown diameter. Marketable yields by 4~5 fruiting per a flower cluster than all the fruit setting were higher 4.3% and 6.6% respectively on 'Daewang' and 'Maehyang'. In contrast, the yields were higher 3.1%, 3.5% and 9.1% in 7~9 fruiting per a flower cluster than all fruiting on 'Ssanta', 'Okmae' and 'Seolhyang' respectively. As the result, we could improve the fruit quality and could increase marketable yield by fruit thinning with matching flowering characteristics of those strawberry cultivars.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of defoliation treatment on the growth and yield of strawberry ($Fragaria{\times}ananassa$ cv. Maehyang and Seolhyang) during nursery period. Leaves of strawberry plantlet had been removed except two, three and four fully expanded leaves until planting date. As the intensity of defoliation was strong, the petiole length was reduced and overgrowth of strawberry plantlet was suppressed. Outer diameter of crown in defoliation treatments significantly decreased but inner diameter of crown was not significant. Number of primary roots of the 3 leaves or 4 leaves defoliation treatment generally tended to increase, but there was not significantly different among treatments. Fresh weight and leaf area in the defoliation treatments significantly decreased and the root weight were higher in partial 3 leaves or 4 leaves defoliation treatment but was not significantly different among treatments. Because T/R ratio decreased significantly as growth inhibition of above-ground part compared to underground part, it is considered easy to take rooting after plantlet plating. As the intensity of defoliation was strong, chlorophyll contents tended to decrease significantly. Reduction of the endogenous nitrogen by defoliation effectively led to promote floral differentiation at low temperature and short day condition. This promoted timing of budding and flowering and also induced uniform flowering after plantlet planting. Marketable fruit yield of 3 leaves defoliation treatment tended to be higher than the control.

  • This study was performed to develop a prediction model of sugar content for strawberry. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been prevailed for on-line and portable applications for non-invasive quality assessment of intact fruit. This work presents effects of illumination method and coating of reflection surface of light source on prediction result of sugar content. Effect of preprocessing methods was also examined. A low-cost commercially available VIS/NIR spectrometer was used for estimation of total soluble solids content (Brix). To predict sugar contents of strawberry, the best results were obtained with the spectrum data measured under intensive illuminations at three locations induced from the light source with fiber optic bundles. Gold coating of reflection surface of light source lamp gave favorable effect to prediction result. The best results in validation of PLSR model were $r_{SEP}$ = 0.891 and SEP = 0.443 Brix under OSC preprocessing and those of PCR were $r_{SEP}$ = 0.845, SEP $r_{SEP}$= 0.520 Brix, under no preprocessing.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of $CO_2$ treatment on quality of strawberry during storage. Gas composition in polyethylene(P.E.) film bag during storage was changed markedly at early stage of storage and then kept at the level of 8-9% $CO_2$and 1-2% $O_2$. Weight loss and decay were restricted by $CO_2$ pretreatment and P.E. film packaging. Titratable acidity, PH and soluble solids were not changed greatly during storage. Firmness of flesh was increased by $CO_2$ treatment till 14 days of storage and decrease of a value reduced by $CO_2$ treatment and P.E.film packaging, too. Ascorbic acid contents were more high in not packed samples than packed untill 14 days of storage but after that those were more high in P.E.film packed and $CO_2$ treated samples.

  • Unusual mushrooms were observed in strawberry and sweet pepper greenhouses in the Hwasun area of Korea in September 2015. The mushrooms usually grew on beds in the greenhouses, frequently along with vegetables. The identity of the mushrooms in the greenhouses and effects of the mushrooms on the growth and quality of vegetables were investigated. Mushroom specimens collected were identified based on their morphological and molecular characteristics. The mushroom specimens collected from the strawberry greenhouse were identified as Leucocoprinus birnbaumii and L. ianthinus, and those from the sweet pepper greenhouse as Gymnopilus lepidotus. These were the first observations of L. ianthinus and G. lepidotus in Korea. The results revealed that the mushrooms originated from coco peat media used for the beds in the greenhouses. The mushrooms did not affect the growth and quality of the two vegetables.
