The aim of this study was to develop the artificial trap baits being able to replace the natural anchovy or sardine baits. The fishing trials for evaluating the fishing efficiencies of the artificial baits were conducted with commercial traps at coastal areas near Tongyoung, southern Korea. The preferable artificial baits which were made of minced anchovy, sardine, mackerel, or fish surplus products mixed with wheat flour into dry or wet pelleted or crumbled types, were showed some merits as the following. \circled1 Fishing efficiencies of the artificial baits were same or little higher level than that of the natural bait anchovy; \circled2 bait cost were same or little lower level; \circled3 dry artificial baits stocked in the room condition showed good fishing efficiencies; \circled4 making of artificial baits were very simple; \circled5 there were no harm to the fish and little pollution to the environment; \circled6 the releasing rate of attractants in the artificial or natural bait showed similar patterns. The artificial baits using the fish by-products which were vacuum freeze-drying extract of boiled anchovy or tunas extract, showed lower catches in the conger eel, Coner miriaster, but similar catches in the crabs, mainly Charybdis japonica, to the those of natural anchovy bait.
To supply fresh and quality quarantined seafood in live seafood specialty restaurants, facilities for short-term culture or holding of live marine fish and shellfish are a necessity. In this study, the performance of a simple recirculating aquarium system for the culture and holding of marine fish was evaluated. The aquarium system consisted of a culture tank, a foam fractionator for solids removal, and a Styrofoam bead filter for nitrification and solids trapping. In the first trial, the aquarium was stocked with a total of 12 kg Korean rockfish, which were fed approximately $0.5\%$ of the total fish body weight daily. During the 2-month culture period, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite nitrogen $(NO_2-N)$ concentrations remained below 1mg/L and 2mg/L, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) fluctuated between 13.6 and 31.2 mg/L on selected sampling days. The total suspended solids (TSS) removed by the foam fractionator was between 2.7 and 4.6g daily. The Styrofoam bead filter not only reduced TAN and $NO_2-N$ in the culture tank water, but also trapped solids equivalent to 8.3-26.7\% of the weight of feed supplied. In Trial 2, 30kg of live fish were held in the aquarium without feeding for a 24-hour period and the water quality parameters were monitored. TAN and $NO_2-N$ concentrations first increased and then decreased to around 0.3mg/L. These results demonstrate that the recirculating aquarium system is a functional option for the short-term culture or holding of marine fish.
An epidemic was occurred in Stephanolepis cirrhifer during acclimation in laboratory tanks (water temperature was about $17^{\circ}C$). Diseased fish showed an unique external sign, large cloudy skin surface. We investigated the cause of the disease, and isolated one pure cultured bacterium, that was identified as Vibrio anguillarum by biochemical analysis and sequence analysis of the l6S rRNA and recA genes. During the outbreak, about 30% of S. cirrhifer showed the large cloudy skin surface, and approximately 10% of the stocked fish died. Fish were effectively cured by treatment with oxolinic acid.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of water temperature and stocking density and rotifer density on the mass production of larval red marbled rockfish, Sebastiscus tertius. Total length of the marbled rockfish larva grown in $23^{\circ}C$ of water temperature were 10.80mm, which was the best, while those grown in $29^{\circ}C$ of water temperature were 6.28mm, which was the lowest. The survival rates of red marbled rockfish larvae grown in $20^{\circ}C$ and $23^{\circ}C$ were 24.0% and 18.5%, respectively. However, the survival rate of red marbled rockfish larvae grown in $26^{\circ}C$ was $7^{\circ}C$ and no larvae survived in $29^{\circ}C$. The total length of red marvled rockfish larva stocked at the density of 5 and 10 larvaper liter of water were high, which were 11.52 mm and 11.22 mm, respectively, but those stocked at the density of 30 larva per liter of water were 7.55mm, which was the lowest. The survival rate of red marbled rockfish larva stocked at the density of 2.5 larva per liter of water was 52.0%, which was the best, but the lowest, 18.0% for the red marbled rockfish larva stocked at the density of 30 larva per liter. There was a trend toward decrease in survival rate of red marbled rockfish larva as their stocking density increased. The survival rates of red marbled rockfish larva fed rotifers at the density of 10 and 5 individuals per ml were high, 48.5% and 48.0%, and their total lengths were 11.92 and 11.89mm, respectively, which grew relatively fast. The survival rate and the total length of red marbled rockfish larva fed rotifers at the density of 30 individuals per ml were the lowest, which were 8.40mm and 21.5%, respectively. Also, red marbled rockfish larva fed rotifers at the density of more than 20 individuals per ml achieved poor survival and growth. These results indicated that the proper conditions for the mass production of larval red marbled rockfish were $23^{\circ}C$ of water temperature, fish larva stocking density of 5 to 10 larva per liter of water and rotifers density of 5 to 10 individuals per ml as live feed.

A feeding experiment was carried out to investigate the availability and feasibility of fish processing by-products as a substitute for frozen round fish in moist pellet diets for flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. A control diet was prepared by incorporating $50{\%}$ frozen horse mackerel and $50{\%}$ commercial binder feed. In test diets the frozen horse mackerel of the control diet was replaced with either tuna scrap, tuna viscera, flatfish offal, deskinned hagfish, or tuna viscera ($20{\%}$) with frozen horse mackerel ($30{\%}$). Eighty flounders, 13.4 g in mean body weight, were stocked in 12 aquaria ($250\;{\ell}$ each) and fed six experimental diets for the first 28-day experiment. For the second 23-day experiment, forty flounders,44.8 g in mean body weight, were stocked and fed the same experimental diets. All treatments were duplicated. There were no significant differences in growth, feed efficiency and nutrient utilization among fish fed experimental diets containing either frozen horse mackerel, deskinned hagfigh, flatfish offal or tuna viscera with frozen horse mackerel. However, the feeding performances of fish fed experimental diets containing tuna scrap or tuna viscera were significantly lower than those of the control diet (P<0.05). There were no significant differences among the treatments on the proximate analysis values of the whole body. However, the crude lipid content of liver of the fish fed the experimental diet containing tuna scrap was significantly lower than that of the others. The results indicate that deskinned hagfish, and flatfish offal could be successfully substituted for frozen fish portion of moist pellet diets for flounder, but tuna viscera could only be partially substituted.

Olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus is one of the most target fish for aquaculture and national stock enhancement program in Korea. In order to find more information about hatchery fish stocking for stock enhancement we investigated the sex ratio of wild-caught fish populations which were artificially released into wild seas. The recapture rate was 9.0% to 94.5% in studied areas. The proportion of sex ratio ranged from 7.8% to 64.6% in female and from 34.4% to 92.1% in male respectively. This result suggests that the sex ratio of wild populations might be effected by the released fish. So we need more careful stocking program of the fish to preserve the balance of the sex ratio in the wild population.

A 6 and 8-week feeding trial was conducted to determine optimal feeding rate for parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus during the low temperature season. To estimate the optimal feeding rate calculated by weight growth rate, one year (mean body weight: 62.7 g) and the two year old parrot fish (mean body weight: 344.7 g) were stocked under low water temperature conditions. The optimal feeding rates in low water temperature condition of $15^{\circ}C$ were calculated as 1.61% of body weight (90% of satiation level) for the one year of 62 g, and calculated as 0.28% of body weight (80% of satiation level) for the two years old fish.
The endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow Hybognathus amarus was cultured in 2.44-m-diameter outdoor tanks in a 131-day yield trial to assess growth, survival, and percentage of taggable-sized fish (${\geq}35mm$ total length) when stocked at 500/tank (1.07 million/ha), 1,000/tank (2.14 million/ha), and 1,500/tank (3.21 million/ha). At harvest, fish averaged 45.6 mm and 0.94 g in the 500/tank treatment, 42.6 mm and 0.74 g in the 1,000/tank treatment, and 38.4 mm and 0.55 g in the 1,500/tank treatment; the differences were significant (P = 0.05). Survival in the three treatments was 70%, 64%, and 52%, respectively, but the differences were not significant. Percent taggable-sized fish was 86%, 89%, and 65%, respectively, but the differences were not significant. Yield was 672.5 kg/ha, 1,026.6 kg/ha, and 887.8 kg/ha, respectively; yield in the 1,000/tank treatment was significantly greater than that in the 500/tank treatment, but was not significantly greater than that of the 1,500/tank treatment. This facility is a conservation facility and a major goal is to raise fish without formulated feed. Fertilization produced good growth for the first month, but little growth occurred during the second month so supplemental feed had to be used for the final 60 d of the yield trial.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of extrusion pressure and particle size of feed ingredients on the growth performance and plasma hormone activity in juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Experimental diets were prepared with extrusion pressure manipulated by screw speed [low pressure (LP), 885 rpm/min; high pressure (HP), 708 rpm/min] and different dietary particle sizes [specific surface area: small (SS), $169.9m^2/kg$; large (LS), $67.4m^2/kg$] in a two-level factorial design. Four experimental diets (LP+SS, LP+LS, HP+SS, and HP+LS) were randomly assigned to 12 tanks (3 replicates) stocked with 20 fish (initial weight, 57 g) per tank. After a 4-week feeding trial, the observable trends of the main effects of extrusion pressure and particle size on growth performance showed that LP and SS enhanced fish weight gain. The plasma insulin-like growth factor-I level was significantly higher in fish fed the LP+SS diet than in fish fed the HP+SS diet. These results indicate that manipulation of the physical qualities of feed through adjustment of extrusion pressure and feed ingredient particle size may influence the growth performance of juvenile olive flounder, which should be considered in feed manufacture.
This study was conducted to partially replace fish meal with black soldier fly (BSF) larvae or mealworm (MW) larvae in the diet for Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. A tuna by-product meal (27%) was used as the protein source in a control (Con) diet, which was replaced with 20%, 40%, or 60% BSF (designated as BSF20, BSF40, and BSF60, respectively), or MW (MW20, MW40, and MW60, respectively). The shrimp (average body weight, 0.09 g) were randomly stocked in 28 acrylic tanks and quadruplicate groups were fed one of the experimental diets six times daily. After 57 days of the feeding trial, growth and feed efficiency were significantly higher in shrimp that were fed the BSF40 and BSF60 diets than those in shrimp fed the Con diet. Phenoloxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and gene expression of crustin were significantly higher in shrimp fed BSF or MW diets than those in shrimp fed the Con diet. The results indicate that BSF or MW could be used as a fish meal replacement or as a functional protein source in diets and can help improve the growth, feed utilization, innate immunity and antioxidant capacity of Pacific white shrimp.
