  • With significant development of power electronics technology, the proliferation of nonlinear loads such as static power converters has deteriorated power quality in power transmission and distribution systems. Notably, voltage harmonics resulting from current harmonics produced by the nonlinear loads have become a serious problem in many countries. There are already a lot of PV power generation systems installed in building systems whose harmonics are the worst object for distribution systems as a utility interactive system and also it tends to spread out continuously. In this paper, the authors propose a multy-function inverter control strategy which puts a shunt active filter function to the power inverter of the PV power generation system established on a building system. The effectiveness of the proposed system is demonstrated through the simulation of hypothetical power system using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • This paper proposes a new reactive-power compensator composed of a thyristor current-source inverter. The compensator consists of a 6-pulse thyristor bridge, dc reactor, and a commutation circuit. The commutation circuit offers the thyristor bridge to have PWM operation with minimal switching losses. The operation of proposed system was analyzed by computer simulations with EMTP and experimental works with hardware scaled-model. The proposed system would have low cost and easy expansion of operation voltage due to using the conventional thyristors.

  • Wind energy is currently the fastest-growing electricity source worldwide. The cost efficiency of wind generators must be high because these generators have to compete with other energy sources. In this paper, a system that utilizes an open-winding permanent-magnet synchronous generator is studied for wind-energy generation. The proposed system controls generated power through an auxiliary voltage source inverter. The VA rating of the auxiliary inverter is only a fraction of the system-rated power. An adjusted control system, which consists of two main parts, is implemented to control the generator power and the grid-side converter. This paper introduces a study on the effect of unbalanced voltages for the wind-generation system. The proposed system is designed and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software. Theoretical and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed system to achieve the power management requirements for balanced and unbalanced voltage conditions of the grid.

Sliding Mode Control of Three-Phase Four-Leg Inverters via State Feedback

  • To optimize controller design and improve static and dynamic performances of three-phase four-leg inverter systems, a compound control method that combines state feedback and quasi-sliding mode variable structure control is proposed. The linear coordinate change matrix and the state variable feedback equations are derived based on the mathematical model of three-phase four-leg inverters. Based on system relative degrees, sliding surfaces and quasi-sliding mode controllers are designed for converted linear systems. This control method exhibits the advantages of both state feedback and sliding mode control. The proposed controllers provide flexible dynamic control response and excellent stable control performance with chattering suppression. The feasibility of the proposed strategy is verified by conducting simulations and experiments.

  • Because most LIM is driven by inverter, input voltage is involved with the time harmonics. Therefore the equiLlQ/ent circuit for an inverter-fed LIM has to be modified to represent every harmonics present in supply voltage. This paper analyzes the characteristics and loss of LIM to construct the equivalent circuit for each time harmonics through the static test and theoretical analysis. To make an analysis of nonsinusoidal supply waveforms, it is developed the simulation program to calculate the RMS, peak value and THD for any waveforms expressing Fourier series.

Enhancement of Interface Flow Limit using Static Synchronous Series Compensators

  • This paper addresses improving the voltage stability limit of interface flow between two different regions in an electric power system using the Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC). The paper presents a power flow analysis model of a SSSC, which is obtained from the injection model of a series voltage source inverter by adding the condition that the SSSC injection voltage is in quadrature with the current of the SSSC-installed transmission line. This model is implemented into the modified continuation power flow (MCPF) to investigate the effect of SSSCs on the interface flow. A methodology for determining the interface flow margin is simply briefed. As a case study, a 771-bus actual system is used to verify that SSSCs enhance the voltage stability limit of interface flow.

  • Until now the test of LIM have been mainly experimented for a small capacity LIM. This paper deals with the static characteristics of a large capacity LIM which is designed for MAGLEV. And we developed the simulation program using electro-magnetic field theory and equivalent circuit method. Hence it is evaluated the performance of a large capacity LIM. Also this paper predicts the dynamic characteristics of LIM with the proposed simulation program.

  • In this literature, when the utility line is normal, the Off-Line UPS operates as an active power filter to compensate the reactive power from a load, and when the utility line is in outage, the On-Line UPS opuates as in single phase inverter to supply an active and reactive power to the load. An additional static switch in UPS was used to decrease an transient state during these mode changes. And the result shows that the transient state disappeared.

  • This paper presents a development of the auxiliary power supply simulator for a electric rolling stock. An auxiliary power supplies are required for operating air conditioning units, ventilation fans, lighting and battery charging. Traditionally this function has been fulfilled by Motor-Alternator sets. In recent years, high performance of semiconductor and micro processor, availability and price have made three phase voltage source inverters as an attractive alternative to MA Sets. From the baseline model of the SIV(Static InVerter) for electric rolling stock, we designed the scale down model of the auxiliary power supply simulator consisting of an IGBT three phase voltage source inverter. The auxiliary power supply simulator can be used educatory purpose for training efficiently about operating principles of SIV.
