The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of the low-rise RC apartment buildings having piloties at ground level by using nonlinear static analysis with regards to the maximum considered and design earthquakes in Korea. To do this, the target displacement at roof was estimated according to FEMA356 (or ASCE/SEI-41), and the deformations of the critical members were compared with the failure criteria of Life Safety(LS) and Collapse Prevention(CP) given in FEMA356. The conclusions are as follows: (1) columns satisfy criteria of LS and CP, but (2) the shear wall in the longitudinal direction failed to satisfy those of both LS and CP while those in the transverse direction satisfy that of LS, but failed that of CP.
Classical molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) were conducted to simulate nano-sized cluster collisions with a weakly attractive static surface. Energy exchanges associated with the cluster collision and the adhesion probability are discussed. Routes of the energy exchanges and the kinetic energy loss are vastly altered in their mode according to the cluster incident velocity. In the elastic collision regime ($V_0$<0.1), most incident kinetic energy is recovered into the rebounding kinetic energy, but a little loss in the incident kinetic energy causes the cluster adhesion. Dissipated kinetic energy is converted into the rotational energy. In the weakly plastic collision regime (0.1<$V_0$<0.3), the transition from elastic to plastic collision occurs, and a large part of the released potential energy is converted into rebounding translational energy. For strongly plastic collisions ($V_0$>0.3), permanent cluster deformation occurs with extensive collapse of the lattice structure inducing a solid-to-solid phase transition; moreover, most of the cluster kinetic energy is converted into cluster potential and thermal energy.

The fixed ends beam is analyzed by the s d 0 f system with the rigid-plastic model. And the safety criteria of the fixed ends beam to the Impulsive loads are established with the peak-load ratio to the static collapse load and impulse ratio to the ideal impulse producing the critical displacement. It is shown that the impulse and the peak-load of the impulsive loads are the important factors for the damage of the structures. It is also shown that the damage curves with the peak-load and impulse ratio are useful method to estimate the damage of the structures due to the emphasis on the equivalent dynamic loads rather than the equivalent static loads in the process of deriving the curve.
In this article the seismic demand and performance of two recent braced steel frames named steel moment frames with the elliptic bracing (ELBRFs) are assessed through a laboratory program and numerical analyses of FEM. Here, one of the specimens is without connecting bracket from the corner of the frame to the elliptic brace (ELBRF-E), while the other is with the connecting brackets (ELBRF-B). In both the elliptic braced moment resisting frames (ELBRFs), in addition to not having any opening space problem in the bracing systems when installed in the surrounding frames, they improve structure's behavior. The experimental test is run on ½ scale single-story single-bay ELBRF specimens under cyclic quasi-static loading and compared with X-bracing and SMRF systems in one story base model. This system is of appropriate stiffness and a high ductility, with an increased response modification factor. Moreover, its energy dissipation is high. In the ELBRF bracing systems, there exists a great interval between relative deformation at the yield point and maximum relative deformation after entering the plastic region. In other words, the distance from the first plastic hinge to the collapse of the structure is fairly large. The experimental outcomes here, are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
Static loading tests were carried out in this study to investigate the effect of bar cutoff on the resistance of RC beam-column sub-assemblages under column loss. Two specimens were designed with continuous main reinforcement. Four others were designed with different types of bar cutoff in the mid-span and/or the beam-end regions. Compressive arch and tensile catenary responses of the specimens under gravitational loading were compared. Test results indicated that those specimens with approximately equal moment strength at the beam ends had similar peak loading resistance in the compressive arch phase but varied resistance degradation in the transition phase because of bar cutoff. The compressive bars terminated at one-third span could help to mitigate the degradation although they had minor contribution to the catenary action. Among those cutoff patterns, the K-type cutoff presented the best strength enhancement. It revealed that it is better to extend the steel bars beyond the mid-span before cutoff for the two-span beams bridging over a column vulnerable to sudden failure. For general cutoff patterns dominated by gravitational and seismic designs, they may be appropriately modified to minimize the influence of bar cutoff on the progressive collapse resistance.

Rock properties are important in the design of mines and civil engineering excavations to prevent the imminent failure of slopes and collapse of underground excavations. However, the time, cost, and expertise required to perform experiments to determine those properties are high. Therefore, empirical models have been developed for estimating the mechanical properties of rock that are difficult to determine experimentally from properties that are less difficult to measure. However, the inherent variability in rock properties makes the accurate performance of the empirical models unrealistic and therefore necessitate the use of soft computing models. In this study, Gaussian process regression (GPR), artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface method (RSM) have been proposed to predict the static and dynamic rock properties from the P-wave and rock density. The outcome of the study showed that GPR produced more accurate results than the ANN and RSM models. GPR gave the correlation coefficient of above 99% for all the three properties predicted and RMSE of less than 5. The detailed sensitivity analysis is also conducted using the RSM and the P-wave velocity is found to be the most influencing parameter in the rock mechanical properties predictions. The proposed models can give reasonable predictions of important mechanical properties of sedimentary rock.
A comprehensive study was conducted to design economical foundations for a number of buildings on soft cohesive soil in the southern coastal regions of Iran. Both static and seismic loads were considered in the design process. Cyclic experiments indicated that the cohesive soil of the area has potential for softening. Consequently, the major challenge in the design stages was relatively high dimensions of settlement, under both static and seismic loadings. Routine soil-improvement methods were too costly for the vast area of the project. After detailed numerical modeling of different scenarios, we concluded that, in following a performance-based design approach and applying a special time schedule of construction, most of the settlement would dissipate during the construction of the buildings. Making the foundation as rigid as possible was another way to prevent any probable differential settlement. Stiff subgrade of stone and lime mortar under the grid foundation and a reinforced concrete slab on the foundation were considered as appropriate to this effect. In favor of an economical design, in case the design earthquake strikes the site, the estimations indicate no collapse of the buildings even if considerable uniform settlements may occur. This is a considerable alternative design to costly soil-improvement methods.
This paper presents an experimental and numerical study on composite tubes for the energy absorber of the high-speed train. The purpose of the experimental study is to find out which lay-up is the best lay-up for the energy absorber. Four lay-ups were tested using quasi static method: $[0/45/90/-45]_4$, $[0]_{16}$, $[0/90]_8$, $[0/30/-30]_5$. Two triggering methods were used to create initial damage and guarantee the progressive collapse mode: bevel edge and notch edge. As a result, $[0/45/90/-45]_4$ lay-up was find out the best lay-up among the laminates being tested. In the numerical study, a parametric analysis was done to find out the most proper way to simulate the quasi static test of a composite tube using LS-DYNA program. A single composite tube was modeled to be crashed by a moving wall. Comparison between simulation and experiment was done. Reasonable agreement between experiment and analysis was obtained. Dealing with parameter TFAIL and the mass scaling factor, this parametric study shows the ability and the limitation of LS-DYNA in modeling the quasi static test for the composite tube.
The effects of accidental eccentricity on the seismic response of four-storey steel buildings laterally stabilized by buckling restrained braced frames are studied. The structures have a square, symmetrical footprint, without inherent eccentricity between the center of lateral resistance (CR) and the center of mass (CM). The position of the bracing bents in the buildings was varied to obtain three different levels of torsional sensitivity: low, intermediate and high. The structures were designed in accordance with the seismic design provisions of the 2010 National Building Code of Canada (NBCC). Three different analysis methods were used to account for accidental eccentricity in design: (1) Equivalent Static Procedure with static in-plane torsional moments assuming a mass eccentricity of 10% of the building dimension (ESP); (2) Response Spectrum Analysis with static torsional moments based on 10% of the building dimension (RSA-10); and (3) Response Spectrum Analysis with the CM being displaced by 5% of the building dimension (RSA-5). Time history analyses were performed under a set of eleven two-component historical records. The analyses showed that the ESP and RSA-10 methods can give appropriate results for all three levels of torsional sensitivity. When using the RSA-5 method, adequate performance was also achieved for the low and intermediate torsional sensitivity cases, but the method led to excessive displacements (5-10% storey drifts), near collapse state, for the highly torsionally sensitive structures. These results support the current provisions of NBCC 2010.
