  • The electrospinning process was established as a promising method to fabricate nano and micro-textured scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. A BCP-loaded PCL micro-textured scaffold thus can be a viable option. The biocompatibility as well as the mechanical properties of such scaffold materials should be optimized for this purpose. In this study, a composite scaffold of poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL)-biphase calcium phosphate (BCP) was successfully fabricated by electrospinning. EDS and XRD data show successful loading of BCP nano particles in the PCL fibers. Morphological characterization of fibers shows that with a higher loaded BCP content the fiber surface was rougher and the diameter was approximately 1 to 7 ${\mu}m$. Tensile modulus and ultimate tensile stress reached their highest values in the PCL- 10 wt% BCP composite. When content of nano ceramic particles was low, they were dispersed in the fibers as reinforcements for the polymer matrix. However, at a high content of ceramic particles, the particles tend to agglomerate and lead to decreasing tensile modulus and ultimate stress of the PCL-BCP composite mats. Therefore, the use of nano BCP content for distribution in fiber polymer using BCP for reinforcement is limited. Tensile strain decreased with increasing content of BCP loading. From in vitro study using MG-63 osteoblast cells and L-929 fibroblast like cells, it was confirmed that electrospun PCL-BCP composite mats were biocompatible and that spreading behavior was good. As BCP content increased, the area of cell spreading on the surface of the mats also increased. Cells showed the best adherence on the surface of composite mats at 50 wt% BCP for both L-929 fibroblast-like cells and MG-63 osteoblast cell. PCL- BCP composites are a promising material for application in bone scaffolds.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Zirconium oxide can be a substitute to titanium as implant materials to solve the esthetic problems of dark color in the gingival portion of implant restorations. PURPOSE: This study was performed to define attachment and growth behavior of osteoblast- like cells cultured on grooved surfaces of zirconium oxide and evaluate the genetic effect of zirconium oxide surfaces using the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on (1) commercially pure titanium discs with smooth surface (T group), (2) yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) with machined surface (ZS group), and (3) Y-TZP with $100{\mu}m$ grooves (ZG group). Cell proliferation activity was evaluated through MTT assay and cell morphology was examined by SEM. The mRNA expression of Runx2, alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, TGF-${\beta}1$, IGF-1, G3PDH in E1 cells were evaluated by RT-PCR. RESULTS: From the MTT assay, after 48 hours of adhesion of MC3T3-E1 cells, the mean optical density value of T group and ZG group significantly increased compared to the ZS group. SEM images of osteoblast-like cells showed that significantly more cells were observed to attach to the grooves and appeared to follow the direction of the grooves. After 24 hours of cell adhesion, more spreading and flattening of cells with active filopodia formation occurred. Results of RT-PCR suggest that T group, ZS group, and ZG group showed comparable osteoblast-specific gene expression after 24 hours of cell incubation. CONCLUSION: Surface topography and material of implants can play an important role in expression of osteoblast phenotype markers. Zirconia ceramic showed comparable biological responses of osteoblast-like cells with titanium during a short-time cell culture period. Also, grooves influence cell spreading and guide the cells to be aligned within surface grooves.

  • The 'Silt Pond' is 180 hectares in size and contained ultra soft slurry-like soil varying between 3 to 20 meters in thickness. Soil improvement work in the Silt Pond commenced by installing vertical drains in the mid of 1996, following completion of sand spreading up to +4.0m CD. Prior to soil improvement work in the main area of Silt Pond, experimental tests including laboratory tests with a large diameter consolidation cell and pilot tests were carried out to investigate the deformation behavior of an extremely soft soil. Due to its high compressibility, large strain usually occurred in the initial stage of deformation does not comply with Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory. Taking into consideration experimental test results, the soil improvement works were carried out in main area of Silt Pond containing ultra soft soil. This paper presents the case study on improvement of ultra-soft soil.

  • This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of nonlocal dispersal models with nonlocal delays. The existence of traveling wave solutions is investigated by the upper and lower solutions, and the asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions is studied by the idea of contracting rectangles. To illustrate these results, a delayed competition model is considered by presenting the existence and nonexistence of traveling wave solutions, which completes and improves some known results. In particular, our conclusions can deal with the traveling wave solutions of evolutionary systems which admit large time delays reflecting intraspecific competition in population dynamics and leading to the failure of comparison principle in literature.

  • In the 21th century, the age of image, people express and are evaluated with their images. Image making, as behavior of creating image, is rapidly spreading in the society. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the precise concepts of image making, and the meaning of personal image and fashion styling in image making. Based on previous studies in clothing for a theoretical examination of the concepts of image making, and the meaning of personal image and fashion styling in image making, we have analyzed and studied the concepts of image making generally accepted in the society. The results of this study are as follows. First, personal image making aims at the establishment of one's own identity through the ideal image construction. Second, the establishment of one's own identity through building up his ideal image is completed through fashion styling. Third. image making increases one's personal values and competitive power to implement its ultimate goals. In this study, we have proved that image making makes people establish their own identity by building up their ideal images through fashion styling.

  • Wetting properties between silver-copper-titanium braze alloys with different titanium contents up to 2.8 mass% and hexagonal boron nitride ceramics were investigated using sessile drop method at 1123K in Argon. The final contact angle is less than $30^{\circ}$ when the Ti content was over 0.41 mass%. Meanwhile, the contact angle curves show different behavior. In case of using braze alloy containing 2.8 mass% of titanium, the initial contact angle is acute angle just after the melting of braze. In case of brazes containing titanium less than 2.26 mass%, the contact angle is larger than $90^{\circ}$ at the beginning and slowly decreases to acute angle. The reaction layer of titanium nitride is observed at the interface. In addition, the reaction of Ti in the braze and N in the bulk h-BN seemed to show diffusion limited spreading.
