The present study proposed a method fer simulating reflective boundary conditions in Boussinesq wave propagation model by lining lateral boundaries like breakwaters and seawalls with artificial sponge layers. In order to find out the reflective characteristics of sponge layers, 1D numerical experiments were performed varying the relative sponge width (sponge width/wave length). The results showed that the reflection coefficient can be effectively realized from no reflection to full reflection simply by adjusting the relative sponge width. Based on the results, a multiple regression formula was proposed to delineate the relationship among the reflection coefficient and other dimensionless variables. Finally, the reflective sponge layer was applied to a semi-infinite breakwater, demonstrating that it can also be successfully employed in 2D applications.

Parabolic approximation and sponge layer are applied as open boundary condition for elliptic finite difference wave model. Generalized conjugate gradient method is used as a solution procedure. Using parabolic approximation a large part of spurious reflection is removed at the spherical shoal experiment and sponge layer boundary condition needs more than 2 wave lengths of sponge layer to give similar results. Simulating the propagation of waves on a rectangular harbor, it is identified that iterative scheme can be applied easily for the non-rectangular computational region.

We measured the sizes of microstructures and the reflectance of blue feathers in the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). The colors were mainly produced in the barbs, which were composed of keratin sponge layers with air spaces and melanin rods. The reflectance spectra of back and tail feathers of the Common Kingfisher showed a peak with a broad plateau in the visible wavelength, whereas those of the wing feathers showed peaks in ultraviolet and visible and short-wavelengths. Moreover, the reflectance of back and tail feathers was higher than that of wing feathers. The blue color of the feathers comes from the keratin sponge layer due to coherent scattering. The back and tail feathers are composed of the keratin sponge layer only, and the wing feathers are composed of the keratin sponge layer and the keratin honeycomb structure. Due to the difference in these structures, it supposed that the reflectance is different. Determining why the reflectance spectra of the back and tail feathers were flattened will require further study.

Rocket noise generated from the exhaust plume produces the enormous acoustic loading, which adversely affects the integrity of the electronic components and payload (satellite) at liftoff. The prediction of rocket noise consists of two steps: the supersonic jet exhaust is simulated by a method of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and an acoustic transport method, such as the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral, is applied to predict the noise field. One of the difficulties in the CFD step is to remove the boundary reflection artifacts from the finite computation boundary. In general, artificial damping, known as a sponge layer, is added nearby the boundary to attenuate these reflected waves but this layer demands a large computational area and an optimization procedure of related parameters. In this paper, a cost-efficient way to separate the reflected waves based on the two microphone method is firstly introduced and applied to the computation result of a laboratory-scale supersonic jet noise without sponge layers.
Prussian blue (PB) is well known for its excellent $Cs^+$ ions adsorption capacity. Due to the high dispersibility of PB in aqueous phase, composite materials imbedding PB in supporting materials have been introduced as a solution. However, building PB particles inside porous supporting materials is still difficult, as PB particles are not fully formed and elute out to water. In this study, we suggest layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly to provide better immobilization of PB on supporting materials of poly vinyl alcohol sponge (PVA) and cellulose filter (CF). Three different PB attachment methods, ex-situ/in-situ/LBL assembly, were evaluated using PB leaching test as well as $Cs^+$ adsorption test. Changes of surface functionality and morphology during PB composite preparation protocols were monitored through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that LBL assembly led to better PB attachment on supporting materials, bringing less eluting PB particles in aqueous phase compared to other synthesis methodologies, such as ex-situ and in-situ synthesis. By enhancing the stability of the adsorbent, adsorption capacity of PVA-PB with LBL improved nine times and that of CF-PB improved over 20 times. Therefore, the results suggest that LBL assembly offers a better orientation for growing PB particles on porous supporting materials.

The marine sponge Hyrtios sp. collected in the Philippines was extracted and partitioned. The resulting organic layer was purified by C18 reversed-phase column chromatography and HPLC to achieve the separation of nine scalarane-type sesterterpenes, including one new compound with eight known scalarane analogs. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds 1-9 were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR and MS data analysis. All nine compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative bacteria. The compound 3 exhibited potent antibacterial activities against Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus luteus. The compounds 7 and 9 displayed considerable activities against Bacillus subtilis and the others had moderate results.

As a research on the practical approaches of gamma irradiation for the reduction of egg allergy, cakes including gamma-irradiated egg white were manufactured, and rheological characteristics and sensory qualities of the cakes were evaluated. Egg white was separated from whole egg and then gamma-irradiated with the absorbed dose of 10 or 20 kGy White layer cake, pound cake and sponge cake were made with irradiated egg white and used to the subsequent experiments. Firmness of all samples containing irradiated egg white was higher than that of control. Retrogradation of pound and sponge cakes containing irradiated egg white was delayed, and the result showed that the usage of irradiated egg white was better at the point of rheological storage ability. Effects of irradiated egg white on the sensory quality were different depending onto the properties of each product. Radiation off-odor was observed in the a11 samples containing irradiated egg white. To maintain the sensory Qualify, adequate methods such as masking effects should be developed during manufacture.
Thin film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes were prepared on polyester (PET) nonwoven reinforced polysulfone supports for forward osmosis (FO) processes. PSF (polysulfone) supports were prepared via the phase inversion process from PSF casting solutions in dimethyl formamide (DMF) solvents (19 wt%) by using a PET nonwoven (thickness of $100{\mu}m$) as a mechanical reinforcing material for reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. The PSF support from 19 wt% of DMF/PSF casting solution showed sponge-like morphology and asymmetric internal structure. To reduce the internal concentration polarization in FO operation, thin ($20{\mu}m$ of thickness) nonwoven-supported PSF supports were prepared by using PSF/DMF casting solution (9~19 wt%). A desirable support structure with a highly porous sponge-like morphology were achieved from the thin nonwoven-supported PSF layer prepared with 9~12 wt% casting solution. A crosslinked aromatic polyamide layer was fabricated on top of each support to form a TFC PA membrane. The tested sample from 12 wt% of DMF/PSF casting solution presented outstanding FO performance, almost 5.5 times higher water flux (24.3 LMH) with low reverse salt flux (RDF, 1.5 GMH) compared to a thick nonwoven rainforced membrane (4.5 LMH of flux and 3.47 GMH of RSF). By reducing the thickness of the nonwoven and optimizing PSF concentration of casting solution, the morphology of the prepared membranes were changed from a dense structure to a porous sponge structure in the boundary area between nonwoven and PET support layer.
ABA-type block copolymers composed of poly(L-leucine)(PLL) as the A component and poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) as the B component were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of L-leucine N-carboxyanhydride initiated by primary amino group located at both ends of PEG chain. A silver sulfadiazine(AgSD)-impregnated wound dressing of sponge-type was prepared by the lyophilization method. Morphological structure of this wound dressing obtained by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was composed of a dense skin layer and a macroporous inner sponge layer. Equilibrium water content(EWC) of wound dressing was above 10%. It increased with an increased of PEO content in the block copolymer due to the hydrophilicity of PEO. AgSD release from AgSD- impregnated wound dressing in PBS buffer(pH=7.4) was dependent on PEG composition in the block copolymer. Therefore, EWC and release of AgSD can be control by PEG composition. Antibacterial capacity of AgSD-impregnated wound dressing was examined in agar plate against Pseudmonas aeruginosa and Stapplococus aruous. Cytotoxicity of the wound dressing was evaluated by studing mouse skin fibroblast(L929). From the behavior of antimicrobial releasing and the investigation of the suppression of bacterial proliferation, it was supposed that the wound dressing containing antibiotics could protect the wound surfaces from bacterial invasion to suppress the bacterial proliferation effectively. In cytotoxicity observation, cellular damage was reduced by the control led released of AgSD from the LEL sponge matrix of AgSD-medicated wound dressing. In vivo test, granulous tissue formation and wound contraction or the AgSD and DHEA impregnated wound dressing were aster than any other groups.

The SiC and ZrC are critical and essential materials in TRISO coated fuel particles since they act as protective layers against diffusion of metallic and gaseous fission products and provides mechanical strength for the fuel particle. However, SiC and ZrC have critical disadvantage that SiC loses chemical integrity by thermal dissociation at high temperature and mechanical properties of ZrC are weaker than SiC. In order to complement these problems, we made new combinations of the coating layers that the ZrC layers composed of SiC. In this study, after Silicon carbide(SiC) were chemically vapor deposited on graphite substrate, Zirconium carbide(ZrC) were deposited on SiC/graphite substrate by using Zr reaction technology with Zr sponge materials. The different morphologies of sub-deposited SiC layers were correlated with microstructure, chemical composition and mechanical properties of deposited ZrC films. Relationships between deposition pressure and microstructure of deposited ZrC films were discussed. The deposited ZrC films on SiC of faceted structure with smaller grain size has better mechanical properties than deposited ZrC on another structure due to surface growth trend and microstructure of sub-deposited layer.
