  • A three-dimensional higher order boundary element method based on the B-spline is presented. The method accurately models piecewise continuous bodies and induced velocity potentials using B-spline tensor product representations, and it is capable of obtaining accurate pointwise values for the potential and its derivatives, especially in the trailing edge and tip region of the lift generating body, which may be difficult or impossible to evaluate with constant panel methods. In addition, we implement a wake roll-up and examine the tip vortex formation in the near wake region. The results are compared with existing numerical results and the results of experiments performed out at the cavitation tunnel of Chungnam National University.

  • This paper presents properties of piecewise cubic B-spline function and Rayleigh-Ritz method to compute the smallest eigenvales. In order to compute the smallest eigenvalues, Rayleigh quotient approach is used and four different types of finite element approximating functions corresponding to the statical deflection curve, spanned by the linearly independent set of piecewise cubic B-spline functions with equally spaced 5 knots from a partion of [0, 1], each satisfying homogeneous boundary conditions with constraining effects are used to compute the smallest eigenvalues for a Sturm-Lionville boundary equations of u"+ λ²u=0, u(0.0)=u(0.0)=0, 0≤x≤1.0.

  • In this work we investigate the finite element preconditioning method for the $C^1$-cubic spline collocation discretizations for an elliptic operator A defined by $Au := -{\Delta}u + a_1u_x+a_2u_y+a_0u$ in the unit square with some boundary conditions. We compute the condition number and the numerical solution of the preconditioning system for the several example problems. Finally, we compare the this preconditioning system with the another preconditioning system.

  • An efficient spline boundary element scheme is newly developed for water wave scattering of an incident wave train on a submerged breakwater. Validation of the present scheme is accomplished through the numerical experiments for various cases, by comparing the numerical results with theories vailable in the literature. Very accurate reflection and transmission coefficients for thin horizontal breakwater are obtained. It is observed that the reflection coefficient for the rectangular breakwater is significantly affected by the thickness. Horizontal and vertical forces on the breakwater for various thicknesses were also investigated.

  • A boundary element method with a Lagrangian approach and B-spline technique is employed to investigate characteristics of solitary waves attacking on beach slopes. By comparing numerical solutions with available laboratory measurements, it is shown that the maximum run-up heights of the present model are more agreeable than those of the existing numerical model. Variations of run-up heights and velocity vectors for different slopes are also described. Characteristics of hydrodynamic pressure acting beach slopes are investigated in detail.

  • Dirichlet boundary value problems originated from unsteady deep water wave propagation are transformed to Boundary Intergral Equation Methods by use of a free surface Green's function and the integral equations are discretized by a cubic spline element method. In order to enhance the stability of the numerical model based on the derived Fredholm integral equation of 1 st kind, the method by Hsiao and MacCamy (1973) is employed. The numerical model is tested against exact solutions for two cases and the model shows very good accuracy.

  • In the process of finite element analysis, mesh generation is tedious job which consumes tremendous time. Therefore, the automation of well shaped mesh generation from the minimal boundary input data is desirable to improve reliability and accuracy of the analysis and also to reduce the process time of the entire design process. The automation of triangular mesh generation has been relatively well treated due to its robustness and ease of handling when compared to rectangular element mesh generation. In this study, the offset method developed previously for generating plane rectangular element mesh has been corrected and modified to generate triangular element mesh on the B-spline surface having arbitrary holes. The result shows that the generated triangular mesh has the average aspect ratio over 0.9. The designed arbitrary surface shape has been interactively constructed by non-uniform B-spline theory for triangular mesh generation.

  • An efficient method is developed for the shape optimization of 2-D structures. The sequential linear programming is used for minimization problems. Selected set of master nodes are employed as design variables and assigned to move towards the normal direction. After adapting the nodes on the design boundary, the B-spline curves and mesh smoothing schemes are used to maintain the finite element in good quality. Finally, a numerical implementation of optimum design of an automobile torque converter piston subjected to pressure and centrifugal loads is presented. The results shows additional weight up to 13% may be saved after the shape optimization.

  • Since our physical world cannot be modeled as rigid body, deformable object models are important. For real-time simulation of elastic object, it must be guaranteed by its exact solution and low-latency computational cost. In this paper, we describe the boundary integral equation formulation of linear elastic body and related boundary element method(BEM). The deformation of elastic body can be effectively solved with 1ow run-time computational costs, using precomputed Green Function and fast low-rank updates based on Capacitance Matrix Algorithm.

  • This paper is concerned with a computational method for recovering a crack shape of steam generator tubes of nuclear plants. Problems on the shape identification are discussed arising in the characterization of a structural defect in a conductor using data of eddy current inspection. A surface defect on the generator tube ran be detected as a probe impedance trajectory by scanning a pancake type coil. First, a mathematical model of the inspection process is derived from the Maxwell's equation. Second, the input and output relation is given by the approximate model by virtue of the hybrid use of the finite element and boundary element method. In that model, the crack shape is characterized by the unknown coefficients of the B-spline function which approximates the crack shape geometry. Finally, a parameter estimation technique is proposed for recovering the crack shape using data from the probe coil. The computational experiments were successfully tested with the laboratory data.
