Design and Implementation of a Splicer for Seamless Swiching between Programs in the Terrestrial DMB (지상파DMB에서 끊김없는 프로그램의 전환을 위한 스플라이서의 설계 및 구현)

  • As the T-DMB service is launched, some service requirements become necessary to send local programs such as advertisement and specific programs at the local broadcasting station while re-transmitting the broadcasting signal coming from the central or other station. In this paper, we propose a signalflow required for the effective splicing in the T-DMB system which usesboth MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 system specifications, and we illustrate the reconfiguring process into the ensemble stream that is widely used for the transmission of the T-DMB signal. Moreover, its performance is confirmed by comparing the images decoded at the recevier when the transport stream is swiched by using the splicer implemented through the proposed techniques.

  • A simple optial fiber Y-branch is fabricated using micro - torch and fusion splicer. Tapered end of two fibers - in -contact is spliced with another fiber. Total insertion loss is 26dB and optical power branchi ng ratio is 0.98. Using fiber Y-branch, an UTDR with simple optical system is realized The resolution of the OTDR is $\pm$ 5m in length and t 0.5 dB/km in loss coefficient.

  • In this paper, a field trial of the Korean-made optical fiber communication system is described. This system was installed between Gu-Ro and Ann-Yang telephone offices on November 1981, and carries a 44.7Mb/s NRZ signal(672 voice channel equivalent). For this trial, optical fiber cable, optical terminal equipment, optical repeater, fusion splicer and measurement equipment have been developed. Employing graded index optical fiber at a wave length of $0.85\;\mu\textrm{m}$, average optical attenuation and splicing losses of 3.6 dB/km and 0.4 dB, resectively, were realized. With link margins of 8~20dB and bit error rate of less than $10^{-10}$, this system has been carrying live traffic between Seoul and Ann Yang telephone offices.

Fiber Interferometers Based on Low Loss Fusion Splicing of Photonic Crystal Fibers (저손실 융착접속을 이용한 광자결정 광섬유 간섭계)

  • We report temperature and strain sensing characteristics of two kinds of in-line fiber interferometers. One interferometer consists of a section of Hollow Optical Fiber(HOF) spliced between two Photonic Bandgap Fibers(PBGF) and the other is built by splicing a section of HOF between two Large Mode Area-Photonic Crystal Fibers(LMA-PCF). To minimize the splice losses, we carefully optimized the heating time and arc current of the splicer so as not to collapse the air holes of the fiber. It is found that the first interferometer has a temperature sensitivity of 15.4 pm/$^{\circ}C$ and a strain sensitivity of 0.24 pm/${\mu}\varepsilon$. The other interferometer exhibits a temperature sensitivity of 17.4 pm/$^{\circ}C$ and a strain sensitivity of 0.2 pm/${\mu}\varepsilon$.

  • A 4-wavelength optical transceiver system is designed and implemented by using 4 OADMs (optical add-drop multiplexers), WDMs, and optical transceivers. In this new system, the wavelengths of 1510 nm and 1530 nm are used for upload and download signals, respectively, as well as the wavelengths of 1550 nm and 1310 nm which have been utilized in a 2-wavelength optical transceiver systems. The 4-wavelength optical module shows very encouraging pass characteristics of about - 5 dB and isolation characteristics of less than -40 dB, which is configured with two OADMs, 4 couplers, and WDM couplers by fusion splicing. Noise figure (NF) of the one-stage balanced amplifier designed and fabricated for receiver module is 0.38 dB and the amplifying gain is 14.2 dB. S$_{11}$, S$_{22}$ and input, output VSWR are -28.81 dB, -32.08 dB, 1.05 : 1, 1.08 : 1, respectively.y.

Low Loss Fusion Splicing of Photonic Crystal Fiber and Single-Mode Fiber (광자결정 광섬유와 단일모드 광섬유 저손실 융착접속)

  • We proposed a fusion splicing method for low splicing loss between a single-mode fiber(SMF) and two different photonic crystal fibers(PCFs) such as a photonic bandgap fiber(PBGF) and highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber(NL-PCF). The splicing loss between the SMF and PBGF is affected by air-hole collapse. Therefore, we optimized fusion splicer and reduced a splicing loss below 1.22 dB. We also inserted a Intra High Numerical Aperture(UHNA) fiber between the SMF and NL-PCF to achieve a splicing loss of below 2.59 dB.
