  • This paper deals with the buckling strength of the skirt structure in the spherical LNG carriers. The spherical cargo tank systems consist of spherical tank, skirt, tank cover, pump tower, etc. The skirt supports the spherical cargo tank and is connected with ship hull structure. It is designed to act as a thermal brake between the tank and the hull structure by reducing the thermal conduction from the tank to the supporting structure. It is built up of three parts, upper aluminum part, middle stainless steel part and lower carbon steel part. The 150K spherical LNG carrier was designed and carried out the strength verification under Classification Societies Rule. The design loads due to acceleration, thermal distribution, self-weight and cargo weight were estimated considering requirements of the Class Rule and numerical simulation analyses. Based on the obtained design loads and experienced project data, the initial structure scantling was carried out. To verify the structural integrity, theoretical and numerical analyses were carried out and strength was evaluated aspect of buckling capacity. The results by LR and DNV design code are shown and discussed.

  • This paper suggests the method of the spherical signature description of 3D point clouds taken from the laser range scanner on the ground vehicle. Based on the spherical signature description of each point, the extractor of significant environmental features is learned by the Deep Belief Nets for the urban structure classification. Arbitrary point among the 3D point cloud can represents its signature in its sky surface by using several neighborhood points. The unit spherical surface centered on that point can be considered to accumulate the evidence of each angular tessellation. According to a kind of point area such as wall, ground, tree, car, and so on, the results of spherical signature description look so different each other. These data can be applied into the Deep Belief Nets, which is one of the Deep Neural Networks, for learning the environmental feature extractor. With this learned feature extractor, 3D points can be classified due to its urban structures well. Experimental results prove that the proposed method based on the spherical signature description and the Deep Belief Nets is suitable for the mobile robots in terms of the classification accuracy.

  • Given scattered surface air temperatures observed by a network of weather stations, it is an important problem to estimate the entire temperature field for every location on the globe. Recently, a multi-scale spherical basis function (SBF) representation was proposed by Li (1999) for representing scattered data on the sphere. However, for a successful application of Li (1999)'s method, some practical issues such as network design, bandwidth selection of SBFs and initial coefficients are to be resolved. This paper proposes automatic procedures to design network and to select bandwidths. This paper also considers a preprocessing problem to obtain a stable initial coefficients from scattered data. Experiments with real temperature data demonstrate the promising empirical properties of the proposed approaches.

  • Laser scanner are getting used for inspection and reverse engineering in industry such as motors, electronic products, dies and molds. However, due to the lack of efficient scanning technique, the tasks become limited to the low accuracy purpose. The main reasons for this limitation for usefulness are caused from the optical drawback, such as irregular reflection, scanning direction normal to measuring surface, the influence of surface integrity, and other optical disturbances. To overcome these drawback of laser scanner, this study propose the mechanism to reduce the optical trouble by using the 2 kinds of rotational movement axis and by composing the spherical coordinate to scanning the surface keeping normal direction consistently. So, it could be designed and interfaced the measuring device to realize that mechanism, and then it could acquisite the accurate 3D form cloud data. Also, these data are compared with the standard master ball and the data acquisited from the touch point sensor, to evaluate the accuracy and stability of measurement and to demonstrate the implementation of an dental tooth purpose system

  • In general, in order to operate an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in an underwater environment, a navigation system such as a Doppler Log (DVL) using a Doppler phenomenon of ultrasonic waves is used for speed and direction estimation. However, most of the ultrasonic sensors in underwater is large for long-distance sensing and the cost is very high. In this study, not only canal neuromast on the fish's lateral lines but also superficial neuromast are studied on the simulation to obtain pressure values for each pressure sensor, and the obtained pressure data is supervised using spherical CNN. To this end, through supervised learning using pressure data obtained from a pressure sensor attached to an underwater vehicle, we can estimate the speed and angle of the underwater vehicle in a quasi-static underwater environment and propose a method for a non-ultrasonic based navigation system.

Abstract The Pyramid-Technique 1 was proposed as a new indexing method for high- dimensional data spaces using a special partitioning strategy that divides d-dimensional space into 2d pyramids. It is efficient for hypercube range query, but is not efficient for hypersphere range query which is frequently used in similarity search. In this paper, we propose the Spherical Pyramid-Technique, an efficient indexing method for similarity search in high-dimensional space. The Spherical Pyramid-Technique is based on a special partitioning strategy, which is to divide the d-dimensional data space first into 2d spherical pyramids, and then cut the single spherical pyramid into several spherical slices. This partition provides a transformation of d-dimensional space into 1-dimensional space as the Pyramid-Technique does. Thus, we are able to use a B+-tree to manage the transformed 1-dimensional data. We also propose the algorithm of processing hypersphere range query on the space partitioned by this partitioning strategy. Finally, we show that the Spherical Pyramid-Technique clearly outperforms the Pyramid-Technique in processing hypersphere range queries through various experiments using synthetic and real data.

  • This paper deals with the relative efficiency of two kernel estimators $\hat{f}_n$ and $\hat{g}_n$ by using spherical data, as proposed by Park (2012), and Bai et al. (1988), respectively. For this, we suggest the computing flows for the relative efficiency on the 2-dimensional unit sphere. An evaluation procedure between two estimators (given the same kernels) is also illustrated through the observed data on normals to the orbital planes of long-period comets.

  • Purpose. To analysis the refractive error in 7-9 year-old Korea children. Methods. From July 2013 to June 2014, two hundred eighty two subjects were performed in refraction test using the Auto-Refractometry. Results. The refractive error by spherical equivalent among all subjects was myopia 47.58%, emmetropia 42.35%, astigmatism 32.33%, and hyperopia 8.76%. Myopia was more common in female than males although the difference was not statically significant. The axis of astigmatism was with the rule in 65%, against the rule in 31.5%, and oblique in 3.5% There was a statistical significance between 7 year and 9 year of male in the spherical equivalent power(p=0.010). Also there was a statistical significance between 7 years and 9 years of female in the spherical equivalent power(p=0.036). However, there was not a statistical significance between male and female in spherical equivalent power(p>0.5). Conclusions. In this study, myopia was the most common refractive error. On the other hand, The prevalence of the axis of astigmatism was the with- the- rule. The spherical equivalent of refractive error was similar results between male and female. However The refractive error was different style with aging. these data suggested that the analysis of the refractive error at young children can provide the information of useful diagnosis for the correction of visual acuity.

  • For a orientation-shift model supported on the unit sphere, Euler angles are the conventional measure to parametrize orientation-shifts. The essential role which is played by rotationally symmetry of an underlying distribution is reviewed. In this paper we propose the inference procedure based on Euler angles for the rotationally symmetric spherical distribution. The likelihood ratio test(LRT) based on the Euler angles is worked out. The asymptotic distribution of the test under the null hypotheses and certain contiguous alternatives is obtained.

  • The high-order Laplacian-type filter, which is capable of providing isotropic and sharp cut-off filtering on the spherical domain, is essential in processing geophysical data. In this study, a spherical high-order filter was designed by combining the Fourier method with finite difference-method in the longitude and latitude, respectively. The regular grid system was employed in the filter, which has uniform angular spacing including the poles. The singularity at poles was eliminated by incorporating variable transforms and continuity-matching boundary conditions across poles. The high-order filter was assessed using the Rossby-Haurwitz wave, the observed geopotential, and observed wind field. The performance of the filter was found comparable to the filter based on the Galerkin procedure. The filter, employing the finite difference method, can be designed to give any target order of accuracy, which is an important advantage being unavailable in other methods. The computational complexity is represented with 2n-1 diagonal matrices solver with n being the target order of accuracy. Along with the availability of arbitrary target-order, it is also advantageous that the filter can adopt the reduced grid to increase computational efficiency.
