Methodology for Evaluating Cycling Environment using GPS-based Probe Bicycle Speed Data (GPS프로브 자전거 주행속도를 이용한 자전거 주행환경 평가방법론)

  • The bicycle is an environment-friendly transport mode leading to a more sustainable transportation system. To innovatively increase the use of bicycle as a significant transport mode, bicycling-friendly roadway environment should be provided. From this perspective, the scientific and effective assessment of roadway environment in term of the bicyclist perception for safety and comfortability is of keen interest. This study develops a methodology for evaluation cycling environment using probe bicycles. A global positioning system(GPS) based speedometer was used to collect bicycle speed data. Cycling comfortability index(CCI) was derived for the purpose of evaluating cycling environment. The proposed CCI can be effectively used as an assessment tool in the field of bicycle transportation.

  • Digital speedometer which is supposed to provide the basic data for analyzing human factors of drivers has a limitation for human behavior studies of drivers, because it records limited driving information including GPS velocities. Besides, Black Box, which is currently being actively commercialized in the market, records mostly vehicles' risky patterns rather than drivers' behaviors. As a result, it also shows a limit to analyze dangerous driving patterns. This study performed a risky driving study for human factor analysis. This study conducted before and after comparisons for real time warning study using a risky driving judgment device. The analysis was conducted based on Longitudinal acceleration, Lateral acceleration, and Yaw rate of vehicles.

  • According to the accident statistics published by the National Police Agency in 2007, the number of commercial vehicle accidents explains 3.5 percent of the total number of traffic accidents of the year. Compared to other types of vehicles commercial vehicles may provide more serious damages to both driver himself and passengers. Thus, they generate more serious social and economic problems. There have been various forms of systems such as a digital speedometer or a black box to meet the social requirement for reducing traffic accidents and improving safe driving. However, since the current systems are based on the data often accidents happened, there are lots of limitations to control drivers in real-time. Also, the current speedometers provide drivers with only speeds of vehicles and RPM information regardless of actual dangerous drive behaviors. Therefor, they lack of the effectiveness in terms of safety. In this research, real-time information systems for improving driver safety based on automatic risky driving behaviors, and thresholds to determine risky driving patterns were studied.

  • According to the accident statistics of 2006, it can be recognized that drivers' characteristics and driving behaviors are the most causational factors on the traffic accidents. At present, many recording tools such as digital speedometer or black box are distributed in the market to meet social requests of decreasing traffic accidents and increasing safe driving behaviors. However, it is also true that the system preventing any possible vehicle accidents in advance has not been developed. In this study, we developed critical value for deciding dangerous driving behaviors. The developed critical value could be used to contribute to safety driving management systematization and safety driving behaviors.

The Effects on Kinematics and Joint Coordination of Ankle and MTP Joint as Bending Stiffness Increase of Shoes during Running (달리기 시 인솔의 굽힘 강성 증가에 따른 발목과 중족골 관절의 운동학적 변인 및 관절 협응에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze body stability Joint coordination pattern though as bending stiffness of shoes during stance phase of running. Method: 47 male subjects (Age: 26.33 ± 2.11 years, Height: 177.32 ± 4.31 cm, Weight: 65.8 ± 3.87 kg) participated in this study. All subjects tested wearing the same type of running shoes by classifying bending stiffness (A shoes: 3.2~4.1 N, B shoes: 9.25~10.53 N, C shoes: 20.22~21.59 N). They ran 10 m at 3.3 m/s (SD ±3%) speed, and the speed was monitored by installing a speedometer at 3 m intervals between force plate, and the measured data were analyzed five times. During running, ankle joint, MTP joint, coupling angle, inclination angle (anterior-posterior, medial-lateral) was collected and analyzed. Vector coding methods were used to calculate vector angle of 2 joint couples during running: MTP-Ankle joint frontal plane. All analyses were performed with SPSS 21.0 and for repeated measured ANOVA and Post-hoc was Bonferroni. Results: Results indicated that there was an interaction between three shoes and phases for MTP (Metatarsalphalangeal) joint angle (p = .045), the phases in the three shoes showed difference with heel strike~impact peak (p1) (p = .000), impact peak~active peak (p2) (p = .002), from active peak to half the distance to take-off until take-off (p4) (p = .032) except for active peak~from active peak to half the distance to take-off (p3) (p = .155). ML IA (medial-lateral inclination angle) for C shoes was increased than other shoes. The coupling angle of ankle angle and MTP joint showed that there was significantly difference of p2 (p = .005), p4 (p = .045), and the characteristics of C shoes were that single-joint pattern (ankle-phase, MTP-phase) was shown in each phase. Conclusion: In conclusion, by wearing high bending stiffness shoes, their body instability was increased during running.

  • There have been various forms of systems such as a digital speedometer or a black box etc. to meet the social requirement for reducing traffic accidents and safe driving. However that systems are based on after-accident vehicle data, there is limit to prevent the accident before. So in our previous research, by storing, analyzing the Vehicle-dynamic information coming from driver's behavior, we are developing the decision-device which could provide driver with Alerting-Information in real-time to enhance the driver's safety drive. but the performance valuation is not yet executed. Finally, this study developed positional recognition system by using the DGPS for pre-developed risky driving decision device. The result of test analyzed with the same that the aggregated vehicle dynamics data in DGPS and dangerous risky driving decision device. If the performance of risky driving decision device is verified by precisely positional recognition system, the risky driving management of vehicle would be effected.

  • Most of the important visual information is presented to driver through the display panel that is related to the vehicle. If display panel is designed with the c consideration of driver's visibility, drivers can get broad visual field and visual I information related to vehicle promptly and exactly during driving situation. Therefore display panel has direct relationship with the driver's task performance and it can be considered as an important device that affects the driver-automotive interaction. Many r researches about shape, characteristic and color of display panel have been performed, but not sufficient in this country Nowadays most of vehicles has an analog type display. but its shape and arrangement a are various without any definite standards about position. Therefore. experiments using evaluation tool (VISVEC System) were conducted to inquire the driver's preference on the major objects arrangement of display panel (speedometer. tachometer. fuel meter. and t thermometer) and to ascertain the factors that have an effect on drivers according to the objects position of the display panel The experiment results showed that there was no correlation between the arrangement c characteristics preferred by subjects and the cognitive accuracy but the cognition of V visual information more easy when the each major object has its area.

Design of an algorithm to calculate the amount of energy consumed during cycling (자전거 운동 시 소비되는 에너지량 계산 알고리즘 설계)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the mathematic algorithm for energy expenditure calculation during cycling as a part of the development of a higher value-added cycle. Participants were 60 university students (male 30, female 30). Energy expenditure was measured with breathing gas at 10 sec intervals by gas analyzer connected with stationary cycle ergometer. Values presented by commercial speedometer and preceding researches were used for verification of actual measurement values in this study. In conclusion, the mathematic algorithms for energy expenditure calculation during cycling were as follows. For male, energy expenditure(Kcal)=5.048×cycling time(min)-2.258, energy expenditure(Kcal)=(0.05×cycling velocity(kph))×(4.750×cycling time(min)+0.091). For female, energy expenditure(Kcal)=4.466×cycling time(min)-1.605, energy expenditure(Kcal)(cycling velocity≤20kph)=(0.05×cycling velocity(kph))×(4.151× cycling time(min)-0.736), energy expenditure(Kcal)(cycling velocity>20kph)=(0.04×cycling velocity(kph)) ×(4.151×cycling time(min) -0.736). And it is suggested that the developed algorithm with cycling time and velocity should be applied for the development of a higher value-added cycle.
