An Empirical Analysis of Auditory Interfaces in Human-computer Interaction

  • This study attempted to compare usability of auditory interfaces, which is a comprehensive concept that includes safety, utility, effectiveness, and efficiency, in personal computing environments: verbal messages (speech sounds), earcons (musical sounds), and auditory icons (natural sounds). This study hypothesized that verbal messages would offer higher usability than earcons and auditory icons, since the verbal messages are easy to interpret and understand based on semiotic process. In this study, usability was measured by a set of seven items: ability to inform what the program is doing, relevance to visual interfaces, degree of stimulation, degree of understandability, perceived time pressure, clearness of sound outputs, and degrees of satisfaction. Through the experimental research, the results showed that verbal messages provided the highest level of usability. On the contrary, auditory icons showed the lowest level of usability, as they require users to establish new coding schemes, and thus demand more mental effort from users.

  • we developed an information management system that manages various types of medical information such as text, image, sound, and laboratory data. We also developed a multimedia description system, in which medical doctors can describe his findings and interpretations with text and speech. The descriptions include the references to the data items stored in the information management systems. The communication between the description system and the information management systems is carried out using OLE/COM mechanism. The information management system was implemented by using Microsoft Open Data Base Connectivity(ODBC).

  • 선교에는 항해사에게 정보를 전달하기 위하여 다양한 신호가 존재한다. 항해 및 통신 장비로부터 나오는 음향 신호 등 다양한 청각 신호들이 존재하지만 이러한 청각 신호, 청각 경고음에 대한 인간의 인지능력에 관한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 청각 경고음은 크게 음성(speech), 함축적 소리(abstract sound), 청각 아이콘(auditory icon)으로 구분 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 청각 경고음 중 청각아이콘을 활용하여 5가지의 경보상황(엔진, 화재, 조타, 전기, 충돌)에서 청각아이콘에 대한 감성평가를 통해 각 상황에 적합한 청각아이콘을 선별하였다. 본 연구 결과는 선교 내 청각표시장치와 통합선교알람관리시스템을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • The aim of this paper is to exam why the nouns that used /kh, ph, ts, th/, as the final phoneme changed. Assuming that these change related to the aspects of the word usage, we collected the word frequency and the phonetic form of words. The results are as follows : ① The realization of standard phonetic form is related to the frequency of case marker that could not be omitted, combined with the word. ② The changing into /s/ in a coronal consonant is related to the case marker [i].

  • Music Summarization is to extract there presentative section of a song such as chorus or motif. In previous work, the length of music summarization was fixed, and the threshold to determine the chorus section was so sensitive that the tuning was needed. Also, the rapid change of rhythm or variation of sound effects make the chorus extraction errors. We suggest the linear regression for extracting the changeable length and for minimizing the effects of threshold variation. The experimental result shows that proposed method outperforms conventional one.

운율교육을 위한 운율이식기술 개선 방안 연구 (Improvement of Prosody Transplantation Technology for English Prosody Education and Its Application)

  • This study focused on the improvement of prosody transplantation technology to be used for effective prosody education. Issues making the technology a less acceptable tool for prosody education were addressed. Instead of merely copying the target pitch onto a learner's utterances, the target pitch was resealed in semitone before the transplantation. In so doing, distortion of a signal was minimized and the transplanted utterance could have the quality of sound not different from the learner's utterances. Instead of manual transplantation, an automatic procedure was proposed to increase the reliability and the consistency of the outcome and enable real time processing. The perceptual performance of the automatic transplantation was evaluated by the perception experiment showing the automatic ransplantation was as good as the manual process.

  • The noise inside a naval vessel is very important in considering the need for hearing protection, improving the working environment and maintaining good communications for crews living on board a naval vessel. The indoor noise of a ship usually is specified by the A-weighted sound pressure level, but other evaluating parameters are required to reflect human senses more effectively. This paper uses additional noise indices related to room acoustics, such as NR(noise rating), NC(noise criterion), RC(room criterion), PSIL(preferred speech interference level) and loudness level to evaluate the noise inside cabins on a naval vessel. Using these psychological noise indices, allowable limit of noise level in cabins is suggested through psycho-acoustic evaluation for the noise in cabins.

  • Recently the acoustic design has been considered the important part of architectural design. However, in the design of Catholic churches the exterior beauty is still main point. This study aims to find out the acoustical characteristics in the main hall of Catholic churches. Six catholic churches were selected for this experiment and the physical parameters which represent the acoustic characteristics of room were compared by the plan type and the architectural factor. The physical parameters compared and analyzed were SD(Stand deviation) of SPL(sound pressure level), RT(reverberation time), $D_{50}$(definition), $C_{80}$(clarity) and STI(speech transmission index).

  • 후두전적출술후 음성재활방법은 식도발성, 기관식도발성, 전기후두발성, 기체역학형 인공후두 발성등이 있다. 본 연구에서는 각각의 음향학적 특성과 어떤 방법이 음성의 발성에 효과적이고, 음의 고저를 잘 나타낼 수 있는 지를 연구하였고 식도발성과 기관식도발성이 동시에 가능한 환자에서도 위와 같이 어떤 것이 음의 고저를 잘 나타낼 수 있는 지를 보고자 본 연구를 시행하였다. 식도발성자 5명, 기관식도발성자 7명(2가지가 다 가능한 발성자 2명을 포함하여), 전기후두발성자 3명과 공기를 이용한 인공후두(Pneumatic speech aid) 발성자 3명을 대상으로 하여 Maximal phonation time(sec), Sound intensity (dB SPL), Fundemental frequency (F0), Jitter(%), Shimmer(%)를 Matlab V5.1을 기초로 저자들이 고안한 프로그램인 Laryngeal analyser Vl.0 으로 측정하였다. 각각의 발성법에 따라 특징적인 변수의 차이가 있었으며 그중 공기를 이용한 인공후두 발성자에서 음의 고저를 가장 잘 표현하였다. (p<0.01). 그리고 식도발성과 기관식도발성을 같이 사용할 수 있는 2명에서 식도발성이 기관식도발성보다 더 효과적으로 음의 고저를 잘 나타냈다.

후두미세수술의 기본 원칙 (General Principles in Phonomicrosugery)

  • The origin and growth of laryngology is inseparably linked to the development of endoscopic surgery of the larynx. Phonomicrosurgery is a means of maximally preserving the layered microstructure of the vocal fold, that is, the epithelium and lamina propria. Phonomicrosurgery has developed from convergence of micro laryngoscopic surgical technique theory and the mucosal wave theory of laryngeal sound production. Improvements in technology (i.e., laryngoscopes, handled instruments, and lasers), which in part arise from developments in more frequently performed minimally invasive surgical procedures, will probably facilitate the next generation of procedural innovations. The best methods of optimizing phonosurgical outcomes include making an accurate diagnosis, completing a comprehensive voice evaluation, providing sufficient preoperative therapy, carefully selecting patients to undergo phonomicrosurgical procedures, and requiring sufficient postoperative rest and therapy. Phonomicrosurgery will continue to evolve as a result of the interdependent collaboration of surgeons with voice scientists, speech pathologist, and other voice professionals.
