  • This paper presents a rigorous solution for spherical cavity expansion in unsaturated soils under constant suction condition. The hydraulic behavior that describes the saturation-suction relationship is modeled by a void ratio-dependent soil-water characteristic curve, which allows the hydraulic behavior to fully couple with the mechanical behavior that is described by an extended critical state soil model for unsaturated soil through the specific volume. Considering the boundary condition and introducing an auxiliary coordinate, the problem is formulated to a system of first-order differential equations with three principal stress components and suction as basic unknowns, which is solved as an initial value problem. Parameter analyses are conducted to investigate the effects of suction and the overconsolidation ratio on the overall expansion responses, including the pressure-expansion response, the distribution of the stress components around the cavity, and the stress path of the soil during cavity expansion. The results reveal that the expansion pressures and the distribution of the stress components in unsaturated soils are generally higher than those in saturated soils due to the existence of suction.

  • The rheological properties of exopolysaccharide(EPS-R) produced by marine bacteria Hahella chjuensis KCTC 2395 was investigated. EPS-R solution showed a characteristic non-Newtonian behavior fluid properties. In aqueose dispersions of EPS-R 1%, consistency index(K) and flow behavior index(n) were 1,410 cp and 0.73. EPS-R solution was pseudoplastic fluid by power-low model. Rheological propertie of EPS-R was found to be influenced by the concentration of salt, pH, temperature and ionic compounds.

  • Considered here is the first initial boundary value problem for the two-dimensional g-Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains. We first study the long-time behavior of strong solutions to the problem in term of the existence of a global attractor and global stability of a unique stationary solution. Then we study the long-time finite dimensional approximation of the strong solutions.

  • Ultra-fine hydroxyapatite powder were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction at 10 atm, 3 hrs of Ca(OH)2 suspension with (NH4)2HPO4 solution, and were characterized sintering behavior. Sintered bodies of hydroxyapatite powders which synthesized by hydrothermal reaction method has less weight loss, less sintering shrinkage and superior mechanical property, and was more dense than sintered bodies of hydroxyapatite powder which synthesized by wet method. Sintered bodies were hydroxyapatite single phase. When soack in Ringer's solution for 2 weeks, hydroxyapatite powders preserved hydroxyapatite and sintered body absorbed trace of Ca2+ ion with soaked time.

  • Hydroxyapatite powders were synthesized with Ca/P=1.67 and pH=11 by precipitaton method, after characterization of these specimen, behavior in Ringer's solution and biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite, such as cytotoxity test and implantation test, were investigated. The hydroxyapatite ceramics had structural stability in Ringer's solution, and hydroxyapatite ceramics did not prevent cell growing and exhibit any cytotoxic effects. In implantation of hydroxyapatite ceramics into muscle under abdome of guinea pig, hydroxyapatite ceramics did not show any symptom of rejection for cellular texture.

  • The Smoluchowski equation with a step potential is solved in one-dimensional case and three-dimensional case with spherical symmetry. Exact analytic expressions for the solution and the remaining probability are obtained in one-dimensional case for the reflecting boundary condition and the long time behavior of the remaining probability is compared with the earlier work. In three-dimensional case, only the long time behavior is evaluated. More general case with the radiation boundary condition is also investigated and the results are shown to approach correct limits of the reflecting boundary condition.

  • The study is intended to investigate the effect of solution treatment on microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ91(Mg-9%Al-1%Zn-0.3%Mn)-2%Ca casting alloy. In as-cast state, the AZ91-2%Ca alloy consisted of intermetallic ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$, $Al_8Mn_5$ and $Al_2Ca$ phases in ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix. After the solution treatment, Al within the ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix was distributed more homogeneously, along with the slight decrease in the total amount of intermetallic compounds. The corrosion resistance of the AZ91-2%Ca alloy was improved after the solution treatment. The microstructural examinations for the solution-treated samples revealed that the better corrosion resistance may well be related to the incorporation of more oxides and hydroxides such as $Al_2O_3$, $Al(OH)_3$, CaO and $Ca(OH)_2$ into the surface corrosion product without dissolution of the intermetallic phases along the grain boundaries.

  • This study demonstrates formation behavior and morphological changes of PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) films on AZ91 Mg alloy as a function of pre-treatment time in 1 M HF solution at 25 ± 1 ℃. The electrochemical behavior and morphological changes of AZ91 Mg alloy in the pre-treatment solution were also investigated with pre-treatment time. The PEO films were formed on the pre-treated AZ91 Mg alloy specimen by the application of anodic current 100 mA/cm2 of 300 Hz AC in 0.1 M NaOH + 0.4 M Na2SiO3 solution. Vigorous generation of hydrogen bubbles were observed upon immersion in the pre-treatment solution and its generation rate decreased with immersion time. It was also found that 𝛽-Mg17Al12 in AZ91 Mg alloy was dissolved and a protective thin film of MgF2 was formed on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface during the pre-treatment process in the 1 M HF solution. PEO film did not grow on the AZ91 Mg alloy specimen when the surface was not pre-treated and irregular PEO films with nodular defects were formed for the specimens pre-treated up to 1 min. Uniform PEO films were formed when the AZ91 Mg alloy specimen was pre-treated more than 3 min. The growth rate of PEO films on AZ91 Mg alloy increased significantly with increasing pre-treatment time.
