  • Low energy high resolution (LEHR) collimator is the most widely used collimator in SPECT imaging. LEHR has an advantage in terms of image resolution but has a difficulty in acquiring high sensitivity due to the narrow hole size and long septa height. Throughput in SPECT can be improved by increasing counts per second with the use of high sensitivity collimators. The purpose of this study is to develop a system model in iterative image reconstruction to recover the resolution degradation caused by high sensitivity collimators with bigger hole size. We used fan-beam model instead of parallel-beam model for calculation of detection probabilities to accurately model the high sensitivity collimator with wider holes. In addition the weight factors were calculated and applied onto the probabilities as a function of incident angle of incoming photons and distance from source to the collimator surface. The proposed system model resulted in the equivalent performance with the same counts (i.e. in shortened acquisition time) and improved image quality in the same acquisition time. The proposed method can be effectively applied for resolution improvement of pixel collimator of next generation solid state detectors.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the groundwater and surface water contamination, to interpret the attenuation mechanism of contaminant transport, and to find the appropriate contamination indicator. at the two big landfill sites : Nanjido Landfill and Hwasung Landfill. Leachate from the Nanjido, th, Hwasung and the Kimpo waste disposal sites is characterized by high temperature (31.7-40.1$^{\circ}C$), high electric conductivity (14,650-32,800 ${\mu}$S/cm), somewhat higher pH(7.58-8.45) and low Eh (-119.4-20.4 mV), and is enriched in both major (Na$^{+}$, K$^{+}$, Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$, HC $O_3$$^{-}$, Cl$^{-}$) and minor (Mn, Sr$^{2+}$, Ba$^{2+}$, Li$^{+}$, F$^{-}$, Br$^{-}$) ions. Municipal solid waste leachate and industrial waste leachate are effectively discriminated by the content of S $O_4$$^{2-}$, Fe, and heavy metals. The attenuation mechanism of each component was assessed using the chemical analysis. Cl-normalizing process, WATEQ4F simulation, and preceding flownet analysis. Based on the calculation of Contamination Factor, K, Na, Ca, Mg, B, Zn, HC $O_3$, Cl, F, Br and TOC are effective contamination indicators in the Nanjido landfill site, and K, Na, Ca, Mg, B, S $O_4$, HC $O_3$, Cl, F, Br and TOC in the Habsburg landfill site Particularly, TOC is the best contamination indicator in landfill sites influenced by sea water.

  • The principal reasons for applying a pigment coating to paper are to improve appearance and printability. The pigment coating provides a surface that is more uniform and more receptive to printing ink than are the uncoated fibers and, in turn, both facilitates the printing process and enhances the graphic reproduction. The improvement in print quality is readily apparent, especially in image areas or when multiple colors are involved. Although pigment coating of paper is to improve the printability, coated paper is not completely free from printing defects. Actually there are a number printing defects that are observed only with the coated papers. Among the printing defects that are commonly observed for coated papers, print mottle during multi-color offset printing is one of the most concerned defects, and it appears not only on solid tone area but also half dot print area. There are four main causes of print mottle ranging from printing inks, dampening solution, paper, and printing press or its operation. These indicates that almost every factors associated with lithographic printing can cause print mottle. Among these variation of paper quality influences most significantly on print mottle problems in multicolor offset printing, and this indicates that paper is most often to be blamed for its product deficiency as far as print mottle problems are concerned. Furthermore, most of the print mottle problems associated with paper is observed when coated papers are printed. Uncoated papers rarely show mottling problems. This indicates that print mottle is the most serious quality problems of coated paper products. Overcoming the print mottle is becoming more difficult because the operating speeds of coating and printing machines are increasing, coating weights are decreasing, and the demands on high-quality printing are increasing. Print mottle in offset printing is caused by (a) nonuniform back trap of ink caused by a nonuniform rate of ink drying, referred as "back trap mottle, and (b) nonuniform absorption of the dampening solution. Furthermore, both forms of print mottle have some relationship to the structure of the coated layer. The surest way of eliminating ink mottling is to eliminate unevenness in the base paper. Coating solutions, often easier to put into practice, should, however, be considered. In this paper the principal factors influencing print mottle of coated papers will be discussed. Especially the importance of base paper roughness, binder migration, even consolidation of coating layers, control of the drying rate, types of binders, etc. will be described.

  • Sealing structure to prevent flowing hot gas into the driving device, located between the driving shaft and the liner of On-Off valve for controlling the hot gas flow path was studied. Wear occurs due to the constant movement of the driving shaft controlled by actuator on graphite as the sealing material. In this paper, the dynamic wear behavior in high temperature of graphite(HK-6) to be used as sealing material was evaluated. Reciprocating wear test was carried out for the graphite(HK-6) to the relative motion between shaft materials(W-25Re). The results of friction coefficient and specific wear rate according to contact load, sliding speed at room temperature and $485^{\circ}C$ considering the actual operating environment were evaluated. Through the SEM analysis of the worn surface, third body as lubricant films were observed and lubricant effect of third body was considered.

  • Impermeable surfaces such as transportation land uses including roads and parking lots accumulate high heavy metals and particulate matters concentration especially during dry season which worsens the river water quality and distort the water circulation system during rainfall events. Recently, the government has been promoting policies to install Low Impact Development (LID) facilities such as permeable pavements or grass blocks in parking lots or pavements. However, transition of asphalt-paved surfaces to permeable pavement generated asphalt wastes which are detrimental to the environment and has cost implications due to its removal and disposal. Therefore this study was conducted to provide a method of constructing a cost-effective permeable pavement to reduce waste generation and cost. In this study, comparative analysis of the water circulation capacity and economic efficiency of the traditional construction method and new method proposed in this study through the lab-scale experiment. The proposed method was to make holes in existing asphalt pavements, layout geotextile fabric and permeable base media such as sand before compaction. After compaction, layout grass blocks on the compacted base media then layout sand in between each grass blocks before compaction. Apparently, there was no significant difference between the traditional installation method of permeable pavement and the proposed method in this study considering surface runoff, infiltrated volume, stored volume, and rainfall-runoff delay time. The proposed method in this study generated 86% less wastes compared to the traditional installation method and has 70% cost reduction considering asphalt removal and disposal. The construction method proposed in this study yielded similar performance compared to the traditional installation method and water circulation effect, but was proven to be less complicated and economical.

  • In this study, a study was carried out for the separation of metal ions in lignin extract discharged from the pulp process. alumina powders were mixed with DMAc (N, N-dimethylacetamide) solvent and PESf (Polyethersulfone) polymer, PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) dispersant was added and slip casting method was used to prepare the membrane. The membrane was measured for pore size through a CFP (Capillary Flow Porometer) device and the surface and cross-section of the membrane were observed through a FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope). The flux was calculated by measuring the filtered weight per hour using a separation experiment device. Pore size measurements were performed under increasing pressure from 0 psi to 30 psi. The pore size of the membrane was $0.4{\mu}m$ and the flux decreased from the initial flux value of $6.36kg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ to $1.98kg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ due to the fouling of the membrane. After the permeation experiment, membrane contaminants were removed by simple washing. Separation experiments showed that Na contained in the initial lignin extract was reduced by 69%, Fe was removed by 87%, K by 95%, Ca by 93% and Mg by 96%.

  • Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a recently developed analytical technique that is based upon the measurement of emission lines generated by atomic species close to the surface of the sample, thus allowing their chemical detection, identification and quantification. With powerful advantages of LIBS compared to the conventional analytical methodology, this technique can be applied in the detection of heavy metals in the field. LIBS allows the rapid analysis by avoiding laborious chemical steps. LES have already been applied for the determination of element concentration in a wide range of materials in the solid, liquid and gaseous phase with simplicity of the instrument and diversity of the analytical application. These feasibility of rapid multi elemental analysis are appealing proprieties for the in-situ analytical technique in geochemical investigation, exploration and environmental analysis. There remain still some limitations to be solved for LIBS to be applied in soil environment as an in-situ analytical technology. We would like to provide the basic principle related to the plasma formation and laser-induced breakdown of sample materials. In addition, the matrix effect, laser properties and the various factors affecting on the analytical signal of LIBS was dealt with to enhance understanding of LIBS through literature review. Ultimately, it was investigated the feasibility of LIBS application in soil environment monitoring by considering the basic idea to enhance the data quality of LIBS including the calibration method for the various effects on the analytical signal of LIBS.

  • The morphological development of Mycoplasma pneumoniae attached to solid surfaces was examined by light and electron microscopies. Critical point drying and carbon replication techniques revealed that during the growth cycle of developing microcolonies, the morphological form coincided with the pH of the culture. M. pneumoniae appeared to have a well defined morphology associated with age of the culture. The organisms were dimorphic, with round cells capable of reproduction and segments consisting of a spindle shaped body with one pointed and one knob-like end. Starting with single cells, there were the following stages in the development of a culture: replication stage through binary fission and segmentation, stage of confluency, and a degeneration stage into rough spherical forms. The round cells appearrd to replicate by binary fission during the lag and early log phases of growth, while spindle segments replicated by segmentation during most of the logarithmic growth. The growth of the filaments and replication of the segments occured at the knob-like ends, showing a type of polarity, and formed a meshwork across the surface. This development could be cycled under favorable growth conditions, but the culture aged and when the conditions became adverse(e.g. pH 6.8 or lower), filamentous cells converted to spherical forms, losing their reproductive capability.

  • Although landslides were frequently occurred under Tripterygium regelii and Rubus sp. vegetations, the damage of landslide was not observed in sasa (Sasa borealis) stands. These phenomena may be affected by forest vegetation types. This result suggested that the landslide occurred in Jirisan (Mt.) National Park may be closely related to water retention capacity at Sasa borealis stands. This study compared and analyzed the water retention capacity of each soil horizon of sasa, larch (Larix leptolepis) and mongolian oak (Quercus mongorica) stands. Soil bulk density in A horizon was lower in sasa (0.776g/$cm^3$) than in mongolian oak (0.828g/$cm^3$) and in larch stands (1.282g/$cm^3$). Water permeability in A horizon was 0.02055cm/sec for sasa, 0.00575cm/sec for mongolian oak, and 0.0007cm/sec for larch stands, respectively. The water permeability of sasa stand was about 3.6 times and about 29 times higher than in mongolian oak and in larch stands, respectively. This result indicates that water infiltration of soil surface during a rain event is more rapid in sasa than in other two stands. Soil organic matter content in B horizon was lower in larch (0.7%) than in mongolian oak (6.5%) and in Sasa (3.3%) stands. The solid ratio in A horizon was highest in larch among three stands, but that of mongolian oak and larch stands showed a similar rate. Pore space rates was 70.7% for A horizon and 70.6% for B horizon of sasa, 68.9% for A horizon and 70.6% for B horizon of sasa, 68.9% for A horizon and 70.6% for B horizon of mongolian oak forests and 51.7% for A horizon and 49.2% for B horizon of larch forests, respectively. According to pore space rates, the water retention capacity may be poor in larch stand compared with other two stands. Soil strength in sasa and mongolian stands was over 25kgf/$cm^2$ from 40cm depth, while the strength was over 25kgf/$cm^2$ from 25cm depth in larch stand. The result indicates that tree growth and water permeability in larch stand could be limited due to high soil strength. Larch stand was poor for soil pore space development to be offered to the water retention capacity, but water retention capacity of A horizon soil in sasa stand was high than that of other two stands. Therefore, establishment of sasa stand under larch stand could help to prevent landslides.

  • In the recent years, some organic toxic chemicals were used for obtaining high-yield productivity in agriculture. The undegraded pesticides may remain in the agricultural foods through atmosphere, water, and soil and cause public health problems to environmental resources and human beings even at very low concentrations. Small amounts of pesticides can affect a central nervous system, resulting in immunogenic diseases, infertility problems, respiratory diseases and born marrow diseases, which can lead even to death. Monitoring of the environmental pesticide is one of the important issues for the human well-being. Several kinds of biosensors have been successfully applied to the detection of agrichemical toxicity. Also, few platforms for biocide detection have been definitely developed for the degradation and reaction of pesticides. Biochip and electrochemistry experiments involve immobilizing a receptor molecule on a solid substrate surface, and monitoring its interaction with an analyze in a sample solution. Furthermore, nanotechnology can be applied to make high-throughput analyses that are smaller, faster and sensitive than conventional assays. Some nanomaterials or nanofabricated surfaces can be coupled to biomolecules and used in antibody-based assays and enzymatic methods for pesticide residues. The operation procedure has become more convenient as it does not require labeling procedure. In this paper, we review the recent advances in agrichemical defection research and also describe the label-free biosensor for pesticides using various useful detection methods.
